New Jersey Premiere of Hate Crimes in the Heartland: A Documentary - Black History Month National Tour
Lioness Media
Wednesday, February 26, 2014 from 5:45 PM to 8:15 PM (EST)
Jersey City, NJ

Hate Crimes in the Heartland, a new documentary, explores the 250,000 hate crimes committed in the United States each year through the lens of two hate crimes in Tulsa, Oklahoma. On February 26, 2014, New Jersey City University Lee Hagan Center for Africana Studies presents the New Jersey premiere of Hate Crimes in the Heartland during Black History Month. This screening includes a reception and a talk with national and local civil rights leaders.

New Jersey City University is a natural partner to the Hate Crimes in the Heartland film and civic engagement campaign, as its home of Jersey City represents the site of one of the first race riots that occurred following the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, addressing issues of living conditions within the city. NJCU?s Lee Hagan Africana Studies Center, a co-presenter of the New Jersey premiere, has dedicated its work in honor of Dr. Lee Hagan?s dedication to the empowerment of communities throughout the African Diaspora. Together with local partners, New Jersey City University leads the effort to engage a broadly diverse group of community members (representing cross-cultural, interfaith and intergenerational individuals) to further the dialogue on race at this premiere event.

Hate Crimes in the Heartland is a feature documentary that explores our national conversation on race through the lens of two distinct hate crimes that took place in Tulsa, Oklahoma in 1921 and again in 2012. Crimes of hatred and prejudice ? from vandalism, cross-burnings and lynchings to community genocides ? are sad facts of American history. Few films have chronicled the stories and great tragedies resulting from these crimes so often omitted from our nation?s history. The documentary examines how hate crimes have come to be such a growing tragedy and trend, especially during the past decade.
