Bergen Arches Proposal Envisions a World Class Cultural Destination in Jersey City
#1

August 22, 2016 After nearly a century since it was blasted out of the Palisades, the Bergen Arches and Erie Cut are making headlines again as they are reinterpreted as a open space project rooted in the rich history of Jersey City. Local business Green Villain has assembled a team of architects, designers, scholars, community activists, videographers and media outlets to help reconceptualize an abandoned train tunnel into a cultural destination in the heart of Jersey City.

Bergen Arches is the common name for the Erie Railroad?s mile long, four-track cut through the Palisades in Jersey City. It linked the railroad's main line to the Hudson River waterfront and eventually Manhattan, for it's 30,000 daily passengers. The passage was finished in 1910, though since the last train in 1959, the Bergen Arches has become overlooked and almost completely forgotten.

So + So Studio, a Berlin based architecture firm has teamed up with Jersey City based place making organization, Green Villain, as well as local residents and activists to present their vision for the redevelopment of The Bergen Arches. They strive to engage the general public and continue the conversation about urban land conservation and spark a movement that reactivates Jersey City's backyard? The Bergen Arches.

With focus on preservation and adaptive reuse, the team proposes site specific landscape and architectural interventions to create a new public park and walkway, a place to promote local artists and boost Jersey City?s overall cultural reputation. A series of paths could explore the Erie Cut, sixty feet below the hustle and bustle of everyday life, through an elevated system of ramps and walkways that meander through the vegetation canopies, sculpture gardens, murals and more.

As postindustrial cities continue to amass mid to high-rise towers, it is imperative that we look down as much as we look up for the answers about individuality and place. The stick and steel will allow the residents to live here, Restaurant Row to eat here, but without Jersey Citycentric projects that allow us to compete on the global stage we will always be haunted by the specter of placelessness. The Bergen Arches project is the answer. Help us to reclaim and revitalize these spaces that bare such history and call for a creative future for Jersey City.

Join our email list and follow our Instagram . And please share this project with your circle.

GV will now operate as a formal art gallery to showcase and sell works from artists we support. Debuting at this past weekend?s #DemolitionExhibition the Greetings Tour print will now be available online or can be purchased and picked up at our office inside Mana Contemporary (#412).

From the Artists:

For this postcard mural, we referenced an original large letter postcard from NJ from the late 40's. The imagery within the letters is a mix of classic and modern elements of Jersey City. All of the 'Greetings From' murals are created large scale in spray paint in the scale of a postcard and professionally photographed by the artists. Th Jersey City piece in particular was the inaugural mural outside of NYC to kick off the countrywide mural tour. The proceeds from these prints will go to supporting the self-funded project and help them create more murals throughout the United States!

Contemporary Classical LP Gets Dance-Floor Driven Remixs (Green Village 001)

In May 2012, Brooklyn-based composer Rebecca Brandt mixed electro-acoustic, contemporary classical and electronic sounds to create her debut album Numbers & Shapes. It featured 14 tracks of original compositions, written and orchestrated for 30+ instruments. Instrumentation ranged from solo piano to a string quartet, to a mixture of woodwinds, guitars and electronic synths, to a 32-piece orchestra. It reached top 25 for ?Best New Age Album? at the 2013 Grammy Awards.

Numbers & Shapes: Revisited (GV001) was the brainchild of Green Villain, a Jersey City based creative studio. The concept behind the project was to curate a dance-floor driven remix album where the fixation of genre was irrelevant. There were no guidelines, no expectations, and no time constraints for completion. After a year in the making, 16 remixes have come together and created a truly unique listening experience.

Join us for our last installment of the Green Villain BBQ series hosted at the Lafayette Community Learning Garden. This line up is very personal, and is a direct result from the RWD.FM x On.The.Sly showcase that took place at Le Poison Rouge in Oct '12. Knomad founder of the party and mixed media blog On.The.Sly. invited us out to open to the night up. We met PT & Cambo while they were selling their first BASH001 release from their newly formed imprint Styles Upon Styles. Read his label showcase on SUS here. The first release BASH001 was from Dutch native Tomlaan, who now has a remix forthcoming on Green Village 001. Clay Wilson had the second release on SUS and has been on our radar ever since. Long time friends Clear Blue and J-Hilla finally joins our ranks and will be releasing a remixes on our forthcoming Green Village 001 release as well.

Check out a video from last month's BBQ and if you have not joined the event page, please do. It will keep you updated on the upcoming events in Aug and Sept that are taking place in the garden.
