Re: Bright St. Redevepment Plan - Ward E Councilperson's Comments and Position

I live on Varick street accross the street from the proposed development plan. Members of the Bright Street Action group have met with Mayor Fulop and presented him with viable legal options he and City Hall might take in order to stop the ill conceived, inappropriate, development. The response is the "there's nothing we can do" status coming from council members. The community knows there are steps that can be taken. Why is the mayor not taking them ? Why is City Hall stonewalling the community that elected them? More than 200 community residents showed up at Brightside Tavern to hear a talk from the developer. He was not able to answer important questions ex: where is the trash going, do you have a license for your cafe, do you know what kind of environmental impact 87 units will have on the surrounding area, etc. He did tell us that Rushman/Dillon have never built in JC, they have never built this kind of project before, their "research" was from their personal observations, and they were not interested in making any changes, their business cards listed them in Vermont.
It's NOT ABOUT "PARKING", as council person Osbourne would have us think. It's about the density; conceptually it's like having a transient (the developer said "transient") hotel going up, it's the size; bigger than anything else around it.
It's also about the shaddiness of the deal that is allowing the project. It is barely legal and certainly dishonest to the community.

This thread seems to contain some who are making
a big effort to say bad things about Ms. Brauser and about a simple petition with a request to our Mayor.
It is not about bullying or attempting to circumvent due process. It is a petition.
I think our Mayor will be able to see beyond the negativity that a few are expressing here.

I have known of Ms. Uta Brauser for several years, since she started Fish with Braids and Creative Grove. I've been a Jersey City resident for 23 years and only marginally paid attention to the art scene despite having artist friends.
There wasn't that excitement and energy happening like there is now. Uta has given us that. Her presence in the art world in JC is huge. Hence, it seems she has made some enemies and detractors.
Nevertheless, she has done a terrific job of bringing art to the collective consiousness of our town.
With her art gallery and Creative Grove she has consistently brought together diverse groups of our JC; different cultures, ages, and styles make up her scene.
I have not heard of Ms. Kelleher who was Mayor Healy's art's director and continues to funtion in that capacity. But I think everyone in JC knows Uta. I say a resounding YES! to having Uta Brauser as JC Art Amassador
