Re: What is that NOISE!!!!!

I lived around there and the humming/buzzing kept me awake constantly. I had to get a white noise machine to try and cut the high pitch frequency. It's 24 hours a day. We left JC last month for the city and that was a huge part of it (and the Path).

I thought it was the generators post sandy at Evertrust Plaza but even after they were gone it was there.

Good luck!

The MTA is certainly not great, far from it. You want great public transport, go to Paris and the RATP.

But the Port Authority basically doesn't give a rat's arse from its failure to communicate.

Paris puts every other transit system to shame. 11:30pm last month on a sunday and subways running every 4 minutes on every line.
I was embarassed for the MTA, and of course the pathetic PATH.

I just moved here from Astoria last year and let me tell you - the MTA isn't a golden jewel of mass transit BUT they communucate and make sure alternatives are either provided or at least made clear for riders.

For example every few years they would shut the entire overground N train line in Astoria for a weekend or 3 - they would replace the entire line with buses, 24 hours a day.
Yes it wasn't efficient, but even in a situation where walking to the R or the 7 could be possible, they provided alternative service.

And the whole crap about the PATH not owning buses, please they could lease them, or NJ Transit SHOULD provide them for the actual routes that the trains run - not just current bus runs.

Anyway, we have been really shocked at the difference - and we didn't move here to bash the PATH - if we had really known the lack of service late night and weekends it would have been a much bigger factor in where we moved.
What is even more frustrating is that there seems to be no possible way of getting in front of any PATH decision makers - they don't care and that's the biggest insult by far.

i live there now in a 900sf 1br - we both work all day and this (long) winter was rough with utils. from jan till last month anywhere from 200 - 350. Mind you we never ran the heat during the day and usually only ran it in the bedroom at night.

we like living there and it's our only real complaint - the building is drafty - you could feel the cold air coming through the outlets in the wall if you put your hand in front of them in jan and feb. we just moved there in october so I don't have any input on the summer months and AC costs- but I'm guessing it'll be the same - with the floor to ceiling glass windows the place will probably heat up like a solarium.

Still on. This is criminal at this point. Why is nothing being done!? I feel like ever trust just doesn't want to pay an electric bill. This is noise pollution from a building since the storm 10/29. It runs 24 hours a day and these repairs they claim still aren't fixed. Are they really getting permits renewed every 3 days?!?!

Thanks for the info! I can't believe that huge one wasn't even necessary (but not shocked either).

Good to have the noise complaint number - we were almost losing it at night and our building management played dumb.

Some people will move but most will likely stay. Although I think Healy should be all over Christie for not doing more to make sure that JC/Hoboken residents have 24 access to Manhattan via shuttle buses or something if PATH is not functional.

you mean the mayor healy that was almost completely missing during the actual story and immediate aftermath? good luck.

the issue is the that it's the only game in town - and they are NOT sympathetic or in any rush.

again - what leaves a bad taste in my mouth is the fact there was NO ATTEMPT at a temporary solution - especially one that is such a LONG TERM "temporary" situation. people have lost their jobs because of the path's apathy.

that's enough to sour anyone on a neighborhood.

JC rentals / Path issues

hi guys --

just a random question (please don't flame on me, just asking) - has anyone noticed a drop in rents or an increase in people opting not to renew since this almost 2 month long PATH train mishandling/destruction/debacle?

I live in one of the highrises by Grove St. and honestly am wondering between the lack of service we moved to JC for and I personally have additional issues with insanely loud generators from Evertrust Plaza (cannot open windows due to noise) - and honestly if these rumors of no 24 hour path till at least Feb are true - I'm paying WAY too much for an apartment that now doesn't even seem worth it.

I know everyone's lease is different - but if anyone has any insights or observations that would be great. I'm not ready to go poke around the building management company just wanted to get some opinions first.

thanks

Generators On Warren and Columbus

ok question for you guys - in the office building (while with blue glass) on the corner of Warren and Columbus next to 50 columbus what is with the ongoing generators running ALL NIGHT LONG.

is this normal? I notice that neighbors below me have terraces - I can' even imagine they are useable. Is this just because of Sandy - is there really a need for 3 industrial sized generators going 6 weeks later? Any info would be great - I'm slightly worried about the spring/summer - I'm not going to be able to open my windows.

And I'm not talking about the Path ventalation system.

thanks

well since it's looking more and more likely that the PATH won't be running late night for new years - any other suggestions? I heard something about light horse and LITM.

thanks.

Since I don't want to bet that the path will be running 24 hours by new years - ate there any downtown/waterfront JC restaurants doing a NYE dinner/party? Looked online but didn't find much. Any info would be great. Thanks.
