You might try eBay. They often have vintage kitchen cabinets for local pick-up. Depending on how far you're willing to drive, you might find something.

Need to replace our old formica countertops in the kitchen and thinking of using quartz or granite., can't decide which is better.Does anyone have a recommendation for where to go for a good selection that has good prices and does a high quality job on installation. There are so many listings for these kitchen/bath/granite stores within 30 minutes or so, but I don't know how reputable they are or how good a job they do. Thanks for any suggestions!

Re: Permit Questions from a Home Reno Newbie

Hi All- A couple of years ago I had a licensed electrician install a bunch of recessed lights and a couple of outlets in my condo. We never dealt with getting a permit and now we are about to do more work in the house that requires a permit (plumbing). Are we going to run into trouble when the inspector comes- will he ask about other work we may have done? What % of people actually get these permits? Any advice or experiences appreciated. Thanks, Dot

Hi All- We need to have a washer hook-up installed, currently no washing machine connection at all. Does anyone have a good plumber suggestion to do this? Thanks!

Has anyone installed recessed lighting in an older home recently? Wondering what the cost per fixture would be and if you have any recommendations for who you used. Thanks!

Thank you so much PathH8Tr for taking the time to share all this information with us! I hope we are as lucky as you have been ( luck sometimes being determined by hard work and effort!)

Thank you PathH8Tr. I agree about loving the outdoor space and location, but don't know what to do about furnishings, kitchen, etc . especially if they can't be insured. There are so many garden level units in Jersey City and Hoboken, what does everyone do? Would love if you and others out there who live in garden units and have experience would share some tips on what they've done to make it easier to deal with. Thanks again!

Flood Insurance

I am hoping that someone on this board can explain how flood insurance works for a 4 unit condo brownstone building in the downtown flood zone area. I know the building's condo association needs to carry flood insurance on the entire structure, but I'm unclear as to what I would need to carry on my individual unit. Do I carry both structure and contents, or only contents. We are considering a garden level unit. Is this considered a 'basement' for flood insurance purposes, as it is a few steps down from the sidewalk level. When I look at the FEMA website, it suggests that any basement level can only be partially insured, and that contents/ furniture and the like cannot be insured in a basement. Does anyone have experience with this or live in a garden level unit and have flood insurance that covers these items. Hopefully someone can pass along which agency insures them and any claim experience you might have. Thank you!

Re: Flooding on Grove Street

I have been reading about all the serious flooding in this neighborhood for quite some time, and now we are looking at a property in the neighborhood along Grove St. Does anyone know if there has still been major flooding since the MUA did some pipe work around a year ago at the intersection of Grove and Grand? It seems incredible that so many folkshere have to deal with all this water and sewage in their homes. How does anyone ever sell or rent a basement or garden unit in these areas if they flood every year? Is it possible for an individual homeowner to do anything to stop the water from coming into their home? Some here have written about valves to stop the sewer water from coming up from the toilets etc. Do these work? Would certainly appreciate hearing from any of you that live in this neighborhood about any lessening of the flooding or future improvements. Thanks.
