To qualify as an adult wolf, the animal should be large enough to be able to swallow a 6 month year old human baby whole (a loose definition). If you didn't piss yourself when you saw them, it's likely not a wolf (another loose definition).
Though it's a good idea to keep your distance from any wild animal, regardless of size. Even squirrels can be harmful, unintentionally.
