Dear Residents,

We, Pam Andes and Shelley Skinner, are reaching out to you as Jersey City parents and concerned residents. On Tuesday, November 8, please vote for Rolando Lavarro for Jersey City Council-At-Large ? 12C ? and urge your family and friends to do the same.

Through our involvement in community organizing and local government, we understand how important the upcoming elections are as it will significantly impact the quality of life of ours and countless families across the City.

The stakes are too high and we need to elect a representative who has the ability to listen to our concerns, can work and has worked across communities, can bring innovative ideas to our budget woes and legislative priorities, can hit the ground running inside and outside the Council Chambers, is
imbued with integrity and has only the interests of the people of Jersey City in mind. That person is Rolando Lavarro.

Rolando comes from an immigrant family who migrated in the late 60s and helped build a community particularly in the Greenville section. Back then, when his parents were establishing a medical practice and raising Rolando and his siblings, they were subjected to corruption by a city worker who was extorting money in exchange for city approvals. His parents wouldn?t stand for this and blew the whistle on a corrupt city worker. It was early in his life when Rolando learned how public servants can directly affect ordinary people?s lives and that they should be held accountable to the highest standards.

Rolando graduated from New York University and had opportunities to take more lucrative professions. What does he do? He became a community organizer and a public servant. He fought for veterans rights; organized communities to clean-up and protect their neighborhoods; designed and implemented programs for youth, families, and seniors; and worked and volunteered for a number of small non-profits. He served as Aide to former Jersey City Councilwoman Mary Donnelly and as Director of Constituent Services for then Assemblyman (now Senator) Robert Gordon of Bergen County. He currently works in New Jersey City University, bringing in much needed additional funding to support our academic institution as we face very difficult economic realities.

Rolando still lives in Greenville, with his wife and 22-month old daughter, where his parents planted their family roots and where he is now raising his own family. Rolando will do the right thing and serve people of Jersey City well as we personally know that he has and he can.

We urge you to vote for Rolando Lavarro ? 12C ? for Council-At-Large. Thank you for your attention and support.

Hello all! Sorry I am just posting now! As some of you know, I am a Community Activist through my work as co-founder of Downtown JC Watch, trustee and former Board Member of Harismus Cove, Parent at PS#5, Parent of 3 children, and my work at City Council.

I am supporting Rolando Lavarro for many reasons. As a 2nd generation JC Resident, he speaks to residents throughout Jersey City who are still very new if not apprehensive to government REFORM. He can communicate the REFORM movement to parts of Jersey City that others cannot reach.
REFORM issues such as the Budget Process, Employment, Economic Revitalization for areas such as West Side or Danforth Avenue.

As a community organizer, he founded a Youth Group where I met him 6 years ago as a new Board Member and helped him organize JC youth workshops on Music, Art and Oral traditions.

I would bump into him throughout the years at BOE meetings where he, a grant writer, was trying to get BOE to approve a Grant that would survey how much kids know about drugs. It was not approved but it could have led to more grant projects.

He also encouraged me to attend Workshops at Center for Non-Profits with him to learn various non-profit skills such as by-laws construction, ethics, fundraising, etc.

He is one of the main Organizers of Back Pack Giveaway to over 1,000 JC Students this year
Through the Westside Community Alliance, he organized the 1st West Side Ave. Festival
Former JC Council Aide
Former Dir. of Constituent Services - Assemblyman Robert Gordon (now NJ Senator)
Fought for Veterans Equity for over 10 years until Federal Gov't finally approved in 2009.
AND, he is the father of a 21 month old!

But most importantly, if he were to sit on that Council, he would vote the way, I believe he should vote - as an independent from the current administration.

Good Luck to all the candidates! Please consider Rolando Lavarro for Council At Large on Nov. 8th!

Thanks Abourgon!

Hello all! I am coming out of the closet and posting as myself so that people understand the importance of voting this Wednesday, April 27th. Below is the post that I have been sending out but I do want to add how Carol Arnold Harrison is an amazing candidate, mother, lawyer, and activist.

As a community activist and a Mom of 3 children, and a member of PS#5 Parent Council, I, too, am asking voters to support Vidya Gangadin for the Jersey City Board of Education. She is a mother of 4 children in our schools who attend County Tech High, Academy 1, and PS#38. I met Vidya through the Jersey City Coalition of Parent Teacher Organizations who meet monthly to share and discuss school issues like security, funding, and curriculum. She is Vice President of the Parent Council at Academy 1, a member of the PS#38 Parent Council, serves on the Parent Advisory Council of Board of Education where she meets with the Board of Education staff. She is no stranger to the Board of Education and our Jersey City Public School system.

I believe that Vidya is the best candidate, not just because she is a mother but because she is a Financial Analyst. As a Vice President in a private sector financial firm, she oversees 200 employees. She understands budgeting and the need for a process that will allow board members and the public a chance to review the budget in a timely fashion. She will assist building a process that works and has the ability to scrutinize where cuts to overhead can be made and not cuts in the school staff.

I am supporting Vidya Gangadin because she is the ONLY candidate with children who are currently attending Jersey City public schools. After this election, it is her children and mine that will still be attending the Jersey City Public Schools while most other candidates will disappear once again into the background.

Vidya was compelled to run because OUR children are in this public school system now. While I believe that being a parent of children in our schools is not the only prerequisite or skill required to be a school board member, presently only 2 board members are parents with children in our schools out of the 9 member board. I believe that we need another parent who not only has sound business skills but will represent the diversity of our schools and city.

On April 27th, please join me and vote for the Mom with the skills, Vidya Gangadin, 7A.

Thanks,

Pam Andes
