Can landlord 'force' me to renew my lease?

Hello all,

Hopefully, someone will be able to answer this question. I figure I can call a city office on Monday, but perhaps someone here can help?

Here's my dilemma: I like the apartment I'm currently living in. However, I'll need to move sometime before next September because I'd like to be in a different school zone. The problem is that my current lease ends this November, and my landlord is notorious for wanting tenants to renew their leases for another year.

I haven't talked to the landlord yet, but I've heard now from two tenants who've moved out in the past few months that they tried negotiating to no avail.

Does NJ law say I can go month-to-month? Does it depend on the number of units, meaning smaller homes are treated differently?

Thanks in advance!

12+ year old group of progressive families (education, health, nutrition, family life) in Jersey City for the "long haul". Initial focus was making JC more family friendly and there are fewer activities now as was early on. some families are now sending their children off to college while new families are joining in.

I was a member for a very short time, and didn't feel the group was for me.

Anyone interested in forming another group? I'm sure JC Moms will have the monopoly, but perhaps there's oom for more than one group.

When we lived in the JSQ area, we placed my daughter (3 1/2) with Heavenly Day Care Center on Nwk Ave. The staff were very nice, and my daughter loved them. We had problems with the administrators though. I would not recommend them.

To get ready for our move downtown, we looked at several places. I really liked Baby Galileo, but they were concerned about taking on my daughter who has a physical impediment.

I talked to Viaquenti's director, and thought the curriculum sounded amazing. However, it was way out of our price range.

We eliminated a couple of places off our list because we thought they didn't have enough space for kids to move around, including Our Little Rugratz.

We settled on Genesis, and are satisfied with them. I can't speak to the previous poster's concerns regarding the care for infants. I can say that we've made the decision to keep our daughter there through kindergarten, even though she can get into pre-K starting this coming fall. Before Genesis, my husband and I did as much as possible to introduce her to the alphabet, numbers and colors because she wasn't getting that in her daycare. Now, I feel as if we're keeping up with her teacher, and reinforcing the learning she's getting. Plus, most mornings, she rushes me out the door because she can't wait to see Ms. Maggie (her teacher).
