Thank you so much for sharing your story Sabrina. I have enjoyed the food at Rumi a few times and I plan to come for dinner more often. I am no critic, but I do know the food is good, healthy, and enjoyable. Thanks for the addition to the neighborhood, and I am glad to hear you will be getting a sign to attract more customers. Maybe in the future you will add a falafel platter to your dinner menu, but no rush

Everyday at lunch, they block the streets, throw trash, graffiti tag anything and everything, throw ice balls at the retail on Newark Ave, throw glass bottles in the air, fight with bats, curse, smoke weed and try to intimidate anyone they can by traveling in their little packs. WTF!!!!!! 1 cop car everyday at lunch traveling Newark and Chris Columbus is not asking too much, is it?

They seem to get away with anything and everything but if i crack one of them over the head with a bat, i'm the bad guy, right?

I live downtown but I have never seen this on a weekday since I work elsewhere. It is alarming. Can someone try to capture this on video? If it is this bad, I think a high quality video that documents it will prove to city hall that something needs to be done and show other residents how bad it is.

Hello itgirl,

Thanks for the supporting words! I have met the people at Brooklyn Creative League and they have a great model. I am glad this thread has been resuscitated, and people have emailed me off jclist as well.

If a few more people are interested, i will organize a time for us to meet. Currently I have a day job running a coworking place in Manhattan, but if anyone else wanted to organize a day-long event where you all can work together, I could probably attend. They are called "jellies" http://workatjelly.com/ and it is a great way to get a shared space started by meeting other like-minded professionals.

Cheers,

Brian

It is nice to see some people interested in this, and thank you to those who have emailed me directly. I'd like to keep the conversation online so people know there is some interest in this.

So far I have learned that there is a small community of people who work from home in JC. Working in a shared space will keep you motivated and support the growth of your business. If you are a freelancer or you own your business and work from home, please let the community know that you would support something like this by replying. Thanks!

Re: Satis Bistro -Cafe - Gelato in Paulus Hook

It is no secret - Satis is serving delicious food for dinner and it is a great addition for PH. I've had dinner there twice and there is really nothing to complain about. The prices are good too.

I finally had their brunch this weekend, and the food was equally as tasty! Ironically I felt brunch was over priced, though. It would be nice if they had a simple bacon and eggs for under $10.

Lastly, a note about lunch. Since I moved to JC a year ago, I have been saddened by the lack of a legitimate sandwich shop. I do not work in JC so I cannot enjoy a sandwich from Milano's deli as much as I would like - they are closed on weekends!

Satis has an amazing sandwich list - and the waiter said they make their own mozzarella. I am hoping to have a nice italian sandwich someday, but since you cannot order sandwiches during brunch, I guess I'll have to wait for a sick day to eat one.

UNLESS Satis makes sandwiches available during the weekend. That would solve my problem. In fact, in my opinion the gelato store could easily offer a few sandwiches "to go."

Re: Burlington VT, I believe the same company planned the pedestrian malls in Burlington, Ithaca, NY and Boulder, CO. Couple this with the success of street closures on Broadway in Manhattan, and I think this Newark-as-pedestrian mall is a good idea. I live in Paulus Hook and I try to go to Newark Ave area for shopping and food as much as possible in order to support local businesses.

As someone who has walked/biked from PH to Newark Ave, I think another issue with downtown is the empty space between both neighborhoods. I usually stick to York and stop in at Tommy 2 Scoops on the way there or back. There isn't much else in between.

I briefly walked through today and it looked great, although there is no butcher and thus Paulus Hook continues to lack a proper place to get chicken and meat. They do have limited, prepackaged chicken and steaks but the labels don't offer much info. I let an employee know and hopefully it improves.

coworking space/shared workspace in JC, are you interested?

Hello JC List,

I am the manager of a collaborative office in Manhattan for a community of freelancers, small businesses, artists, startups, and anyone else who works from home. The concept is called coworking and it is a growing trend among independent professionals as an affordable way to work. The real value in coworking, however, is the community that develops among these people as they network, grow their businesses, and become friends.

I would like to know if there is a need for this in Downtown Jersey City, where I live. The key to a successful coworking space is a core group of people who can cultivate the community and spread the word. I have seen this community blossom in front of me and I am interested in trying this in JC.

If you are interested in learning more and discussing this idea, feel free to contact me. A temporary name for the space is "The Grove JC" so you can email thegrovejc@gmail.com.

Isn't a "grove" a tranquil and productive space? That's what I am going for in Downtown JC.

Cheers,

Brian DiFeo

hudson point marina

i was walking by the marinas on the north side of the morris canal, and while i know liberty harbor marina is there, i also saw a sign for hudson point marina. i looked around on the internet but i couldn't find anything. it is kind of where dudley, warren, and van vorst street all intersect. anyone know if this ramp is part of liberty harbor, or a separate business called hudson point marina? to be very specific, i am referring to the dock that has a picnic bench and two person grills on it, then a gate for the actual dock.

thanks in advance,

brian
