First off, YOU have no idea what their show is about. It's not the whole cast, so I'm thinking it's not going to be like Jersey Shore. Maybe the are trying to grow up... Do your homework before condemning something, they are shooting for six weeks. It seems pretty lightweight?no big film crew. Second - The strip club analogy is a bad one, BUT I would have no problem with a strip club opening on Newark Ave. If you don't like strip clubs, Don't go in there? I don't live in a city and expect it to be a sleepy, sheltered little town? If I wanted that, I'd pack up and move to the suburbs. I think a better example is: I'm not gay. Gay people don't "represent my lifestyle". But I'm not trying to run THEM out of town. If someone wanted to film a show about a gay couple living in JC, I wouldn't care. These girls don't Look like you? They Don't act the way you do, and you want to run them out of town? You want to boycott businesses they go to???? That is some straight up RACIST talk. Corruption in City hall? It's government, it's corrupt at all levels. Esp, in NJ. We deal with it. NEWS FLASH* If you're one of the people who just moved into one of the new developments? We didn't want you here either. Jersey City was/is/will be VERY different than that dreamy real esate brochure made it seem. And No one is trying to kick you out. WHY? Because Jersey City isn't Hoboken. Jersey CIty is diverse and accepting of everybody?or at least it used to be. JC does NOT have a good reputation to folks outside of Jersey City. THAT IS WHY it's even more important for us NOT to be dicks when a national tv show wants to film here. We have a chance to correct it. If you don't like the show or the girls?Ignore them. But going out of your way to "Protest" and create all this fuss to shut them down? It's wrong, and is just going to make us look bad. Get over yourselves.

I don't care if you're blue, white, yellow, alien, black, straight, gay, transgendered, confused, etc - If you care for the place you live in then I'll be welcoming of you. This is a community and only communities survive and prosper in the long run.

I've lived here for more than 25 years and yes - I'm trying to get into one of those waterfront condos. Since I've been here so long, I'll let you know the best thing that ever happened to JC is gentrification - with those yuppies and working professionals moving into those condos. I remember walking on newark ave 15 years when I was young and was literally scared for my life at times. The thieves, criminals, drunks who inhabited those streets have since dwindled down. But YOU want to bring all of them back. Bring on the strip club, let's invite those two homeless people (one with the bjs cart and his lady friend and have a whole show about it) let's bring back all those thieves and criminals. Please...

Do I have issues with tax abatements? YES. Do I have issues with the corruption in city hall? YES

Do I have issue with 7 million people watching JC being made a mockery of and creating the image JC is full of "guidos" and "guidettes" who only value "GTL" - YES.

I don't know what the show is about but if you believe this will be even remotely educational, you have never seen an mtv reality tv show...

At the end of the day, you want this city to decay and many of us here do not!

If a strip club was to open in JC on newark ave in downtown, Mr Johnson and Brian Em would be the first ones saying to all the protestors, "be welcoming!" "the bikini clad girls and shady guys in the club doesn't affect you at all!" "oh come on, you're so worried about a few girls in bikinis that you don't care at all about the corruption in city hall!"

For Brian Em and Mr Johnson, reputation, dignity, and respect have no meaning.

I wish Dawn Zimmer was our mayor...

I am against the corruption in city hall AND the jersey shore destroying JC's reputation. That isn't a hard concept to understand right? I can be against both right?

If JC's reputation isn't great, Jersey Shore won't make it any better. You understand that concept right? Unless you think those two girls and MTV making a mockery of JC is a good thing? Oh yeah, I forgot - you think they are going to do a political show which educates Americans...

Nothing except it was taped on a show called "Jersey Shore" which made MTV millions of dollars because it generated buzz because it shows a man forcefully punching a woman who later on continues to drink and party....

Of course, jersey shore fans will say that MTV ran a PSA before the show and the offensive clip was taken out of the aired show....and that makes it completely okay to air this garbage or be okay with this garbage in this city.

People are always complaining that NY dumps its garbage in NJ..well this case is no different. I actually rather have real garbage. I can at least wash off the stink....

This is laughable at best. You really truly think that by filming this show for 6 weeks here, which will amount to about 6 or 7 episodes on television, that all of a sudden Jersey City will be a magnet for "jersey shore types?" Get real. Unless you are the actual producers, it's all hearsay and speculation. No one knows what kind of a show this will be. Didn't they film Mercy here? Boy, that really brought an influx of people in here. Doctors moved in like crazy thinking it was a town with a big high brow hospital. You know Jersey City has also been on "Cops" as well right? Did you go out and protest that? In YOUR world, this is really really big news. The reality is, it won't affect you in the least bit. Get a hobby and I can guarantee you 6 weeks will fly by and you won't even know anything regarding a tv show with 2 of the people from jersey shore ever happened.

Also, yes, I'm sorry I passed judgement. I could be wrong. The show could be "JWOW" and "Snooki" teaching children science like Bill Nye. Or it could be an educational show for pre-school kids like sesame street. Or, it could be a show about Jersey City and our historical roots to the revolutionary war. Wait wait, maybe it's a political show in which "Jwow" and "Snooki" teach us how we are too partisan and how we should come together for the better good.

You're right, it might be any of these things! Give me a break...

Yes, women beating...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tHE1t36m2V4

You remember...what put the show on the map in the first place? Showing a woman get decked by a guy....

If you ask 100 people to name the 3 things most associated with seaside heights, I bet you the jersey shore will pop up on that list.

Miami and Florence don't have that problem because they already have established reputations....how about jersey city? What are we known for? Do you know the ratings that awful show gets? Do you know how many dumb people watch that show? Don't you think people will associate JC with the jersey shore if it is popular?

It affects me because

1) In that 6 week time span, that show will attract some of the worst people to the city which will (if similar to past seasons) bring about unlawfulness, noise, and traffic to the city.

2) jersey city's reputation will be tarnished and since I am a resident of jersey city, I am against this

3) it will detract the people JC needs to desperately attract: working professionals, families, and developers.

you're right, mercy didn't bring a lot of attention to JC....hey, which season is mercy on? Oh yeah, it got canceled after one season due to low ratings. That Jersey Shore show has low ratings too right? Has no influence on pop culture or kids?

by Mr_Johnson on 2012/2/12 11:00:52 I highly suggest you walk down Newark Ave and look around. Especially on a weekday afternoon. If you think a few moronic drunk girls being filmed for a television show are somehow going to make Jersey City look bad, you've really got rethink this one through. Thoroughly.

When I walk around Downtown, I do see the homeless, drunk individuals. Much less than 10, 5, or even 3 years ago. I see political corruption and high property taxes. That can change...and it has changed...

I ALSO and MOST IMPORTANTLY see businesses coming to the area, working professionals and families coming to the area. Developers creating Liberty Harbor North and adding numerous other development projects. I see schools improving, parks being retaken by families and kids. I see Wall Street West and very high potential for Jersey City to be as highly regarded as brooklyn and more highly regarded than Queens and the Bronx.

I see an area that doesn't need Jersey Shore and the women beating, it's okay to be promiscuous, not think about your future type of people that show will bring to the area. I see an area that doesn't need people who think the most three most important things in life are gym, tan, and laundry. I see an area that can be held in the same regard as Hoboken. JC pride you can say is what I have....I wish more people on this board had more of it

True. Anthony Weiner has a great career now after he became active on twitter and got all that publicity.....

Those on this board who are okay with these two idiots coming here and the production making a mockery of JC really don't love JC at all and should probably gtfo of JC too.

JC doesn't have the best reputation but the jersey shore spinoff isn't going to help.

Yes - the short term benefit will be there but the long term benefit will not attract developers, businesses, and families. Those who think short term gain is worth long term loss is probably a supporter of concepts like extreme leveraging, mortgage backed securities, and short selling.

JaeTea on 2012/2/10 16:36:48 Seaside was called Sleaside YEARS before the Jersey Shore ever got there. People saying they "ruined" whatever reputation Seaside had clearly have never been there and are talking out their asses. If anything the people they brought down there and the money that was brought into the town definetly helped. But now you have so many people going to Sleaside the police are overwhelmed on weekends. Kinda like the random meathead fights in Hobroken. The people who think they will ruin the reputation of Jersey City are full of themselves. Whenever I tell people I live here they sigh and give me a look like they're sorry for me. The majority of people think Jersey City is all ghetto. I think anything that would show Jersey City in another light (ie you won't get mugged walking down the street) might be a benefit.

I never said seaside had a good reputation. I just said that the jersey shore has cemented their reputation forever as the place of sleaziness forever. They can't recover from it...If JC is made a mockery of which is highly likely, then I only hope JC can recover from it. I don't want JC to be known for the jersey shore...I rather have JC be unknown.

And to those asking whether I'm living in JC - yes - for more than 26 yrs. About to buy a condo in the area.

No it doesn't. I don't agree with him. he basically said that only young single individuals rent condos so if you ever decide to rent, you'll most likely rent to an individual who wants to be close to NYC (nightlife) but can't afford nyc. This person, he argues, will be more likely to not pay his rent.

Renting is just a backup - I plan to live in this place for at least the next 6-8 years.

Studio Condo resale value

Home away from home

Another post got me thinking about condos and after looking at a few places I was thinking of getting one in the downtown area. Without naming buildings, how much would you pay for a 500sq ft condo with central ac/heat, gas stove, doorman, and parking?

Or what is the most you would pay. You are also about 10 mins from the PATH.

I am also worried about resale value but should I be? Someone told me that the only people you can get to rent studios in jersey city are the ones who can't afford studios in NYC and you don't want those people as tenants...but i argued with him. What do you all think?

In response to rbnyfan, I'm a liberal and I do not hold the same values as Rick Santorum.

I don't care if they drink to passing out, party till the wee hours of the night, sleep with a million people, portray the beating of women (all of which they have done on the show).

It's just as a resident, I am concerned about

1) property value
2) neighborhood image which attracts future business, development, and families.

Bringing the jersey shore to jc will negatively affect both.

Again, just ask yourself - Think of a pristine beach in NJ with respectful people and where you would want to take your kids or future kids to. I can guarantee you that if we run this poll among jersey residents, seaside heights would be dead last. Thanks in part to the Jersey Shore.

Re: 'Jersey Shore' Spin-Off in Jersey City

True, you know those sleazy stripper clubs which the NYC mayor got rid of? Let's bring them here!

Good for business!

What happened to those Tonnelle Prostitutes? They were good for business too!

Let's also have those legal pot shops in CA - good for business.
What else is good for business that is depraved, dirty, and considered the dregs of society? Let's show them how "friendly" we are.

There is a reason the Hoboken mayor denied them permits. It's because she knew the short term gain - boost in income in whatever restaurants they visit - will not outweigh the long term negative aspect of this...

Just think to yourself - When you think of a clean family beach to go to, how many beaches pop into your mind before Seaside Heights? Yeah..I thought so. Use your brains for a second...

Not all press is good press and not all business is good business. There is a difference between being famous and being infamous.

It's a shame that those most affected by this - the residents of jersey city, have no say in whether they want the filming or not.

There is one thing you can do - is to vote those who support this out. Mayor Healy doesn't get it and he never will...at least Fulop's comments make sense.

To be honest, I rather have the gas pipeline than the jersey shore..at least with the gas pipeline, there is a chance it won't blow up and destroy jersey city. With the jersey shore - you have about a 0% chance of it being positive.

If I see either of them in the street, I would give them a nice fck you jersey city welcome

For some reason, I can't find how much some of the units have sold for on the http://www.hudsoncountytax.com/html/taxAppealFAQ.aspx site. I've tried different iterations of 201 Luis M Marin Blvd with no luck. There is a 201 Luis M Marine Blvd but very few units. Can anyone link me or tell me how much some of the studios, 1 brs, and 2brs went for either last year (2011) or 2010? Thanks.

Condo ownership and unit renovation questions
Home away from home
Home away from home

Hi All,

I wanted to ask the condo owners out there a few questions about ownership and renovations within your unit:

1) If you live in a 2 br/2ba (one being a master bedroom) and they are in the opposite sides of the unit, can you add a door to the second bedroom to turn it into 2nd master bedroom if the door does not interfere with the structural integrity of the unit and building?

2) Do you have to fill in any paperwork with the association if you want to rent half the unit?

3) Are common amenities also available to the individuals living with you in the unit - ie. gym, courtyard, etc.
