I believe the point being made is when his political opponents had similar legal problems, Fulop would routinely scream his head off, saying how improper their conduct was and demanding they resign. He saw no need for the legal process to play out before making such demands.

But now that the shoe is on another foot, and one of his political allies is in hot water, Fulop is uncharastically silent. Making him extremely hypocritical on this issue, and taking away from his moral credibility.

I don't disagree with what you wrote. I was trying to be diplomatic. :)

I don't think or feel that your observation is correct. Some of us took offense to the uneven application of a policy that seems arbitrary. I really don't care if the criminal in this article was white, brown or black. I am a minority, but I think it *is* helpful to point out obvious identifying traits when reporting crime stories. If it isn't OK to mention a given criminal is of a given race or has a given skin color, then it shouldn't be OK to do so when doing any crime reporting.

To Terrence: I didn't intend to pick on you, or your reporting. As others have mentioned, your articles are among the best at the JJ. I was just pointing out what seemed like a hypocritical application of the policy regarding race or skin color when reporting the news.

The police is asking for help in trying to find the guy. Of course it makes sense to include details of his physical characteristics to help identify him, IMO.

It would be different if they already caught the guy. There there would be no need to advertise his race/religion/creed or whatever else we use to divide ourselves.

I will personally buy a round of PBRs for fellow JClisters at Barcade when they catch this guy to celebrate! Serious invitation with the condition that no one brings any CCTV or other cameras. hahaha

what is the particular peice of land zoned for? just because a develope wants to build higher than permitted and just because the jsq area is getting hot does not mean the residents should suffer. otherwise, why nort just build mini tower everywhere that a developer wants

It's zoned for 42 storeys and the city has signed a legally binding agreement to vacate a small portion of west.

It's asinine but the community wants the city to violate a legally-binding agreement to vacate a portion of west street that was executed under the prior administration AND also down zone the property.

As Yvonne has stated, the community wasn't involved much when the property was zoned for 42 storeys. In my opinion, the elected officials did a very poor job. For example, the city received land for a park in exchange for getting additional height. However, the community doesn't want the park! The community shows their displeasure by getting their former council person voted out of office! Good for them. The Hilltop Community is still upset over this decision, but it would open the city up to lawsuits if it were to down zone the property again. I don't want my tax money to pay for Hilltop's losing battle over their continued bitterness of the poor representation by their prior ward councilperson.

I personally believe this is a good spot for a transition between the skyscrapers planned in Journal Square and the low-rise neighborhoods to the east. It doesn't make sense to have a bunch of 70 storey tower and limit the west side of Summit Ave to 2 storeys. That's how the Journal Square plan was written, and I think our planning department bears some of the blame in screwing this one up.

Before the plan, the owners of 500 Summit had permission to build up to 12 floors but the Journal Square redevelopment plan downzoned the property to just 6 floors. Understandably, the land owners were very upset and sued the city. The down zoning of property could considered a violation of the 5th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution - a taking of private land without just compensation. The city realized this wicked mistake and settled with the developer to build much higher in exchange for a park.

It's a messy situation and I feel for the community that was wronged, but you don't fix past mistakes by making more bad choices such as reneging on a legal settlement and doing the exact same thing that got you into this mess in the first place. The community did the right thing by electing in a new ward councilor.

Just my two cents.

I'm so happy they got this hipster on tape. Shame him! Just goes to show the types of losers taking up the #jctakeitback call to arms. I hope he's sued by the developer to recover all damages and inconveniences he caused (not sure if he would have the money for a payout, but his parents probably do).

In New York City exists a program to transfer the development rights from a historic building in order to preserve it. Does/Can should a program exist in JC?

No point in banking if you spend it all.

Just 38 percent of Americans said they could cover an unexpected emergency room visit or even a $500 car repair with cash on hand in a checking or savings account, according to Bankrate, which commissioned the study.

Better cut back on the gold chains, iPhone 6s, junk food...

Plus why own a car? Transit is heavily subsidized for the government because they realize many residents would not be able to pay a fare that covered 100% of the cost.

The immigrants that come to this country with basically nothing find ways to survive and provide a better future for their children.

Many Americans need a realty check because they don't know how easy they have it. Travel the world and see how 95% of the human population exists. I'm so very thankful to be living in this country.

Reminds me of the guy that had several thousand dollars hidden in his home. He went out to the corner store to buy milk, and when he got back a few minutes later, he realized he forgot to lock the door and had been robbed. Criminals found his hidden stash and stole it, but didn't touch anything else.

May I suggest a different perspective... Instead of intense focus on the height of the building and whether it complies with zoning, focus instead on the design of the building, what it replaces, and whether it's addition would be a net positive for the Village and Jersey City.

This building won the support of the community and zoning board because I believe it was very well designed, replaced an ugly underutilized lot, and will be a welcomed addition to the Village once completed.

Had a building been proposed that was butt ugly abomination, but conformed to existing zoning, would that really be a preferred outcome than what we got in return? What if the site remained vacant, never to be redeveloped? Obviously, that's not what the larger community wants.

I do believe this development opens the door for taller buildings in the village than zoning would allow, but I would argue that any future development should be kept to the same standard as the one most recently approved.

My hope is the community will be strongly vigilant against future proposals that are not well designed, regardless of whether it meets zoning or not. But welcome and embrace the ones which follow in this one's footsteps.

One last note, the Newport Community is built to zoning and is consistent with the redevelopment plan, but it has to be the most heinous collection of ugly buildings I've ever seen in my life. It's a embarrassing mess on the waterfront and lacks any sense of community. So much potential for good design has ben lost. You know, sometimes zoning and city planning gets it wrong. I'm sure they were well intentioned when codifying the vision to the community in the redevelopment plan and zoning docs, but they can't think of everything, so it's important to revisit zoning and planning from time to time to see if it's creating and maintaining a vibrant, healthy community. This is why existing zoning should not be set in stone, and it's important to have the zoning board to review variances to allow for good development that would otherwise be denied.

The opinions of the community definitely have an effect on projects like this - I've been attending Board of Adjustment meetings for the last several months, and I see how thoughtfully they listen to neighborhood feedback.

Agreed! I hope decent pedestrian access and perhaps even bike lanes are included. It would be nice to have a more direct route walking downtown to Liberty State Park and this link could do it.

I'm skeptical of ulterior motives. This is New Jersey after all. In addition to the park, it will probably be easier access from the Holland Tunnel to the new casino..

My main problem is that I've heard the developer has complained that the reason he needs the variance on this project (and every other project he's working on) is because otherwise he can't make money on the project. Which is stupid reasoning. If you can't make money on a project unless you get a variance that exceeds the current zoning restrictions, then maybe you shouldn't have bought the property? Or should re-work your plans to play by the rules? Or maybe push to get the area re-zoned instead of going through constant variance fights? I don't see how his inability to make money within the current zoning regulations is anybody's problem except his own.

Lots of assumptions being made about how easy it is to develop property in New Jersey. The way I see it, the developer could very well be telling the truth. If a viable project can be developed within existing zoning on the site, it would have been done already!

There is case law going back a century showing how a community can intentionally or unintentionally zone a property, making it not feasible for development. It's not as simple as building within zoning, hence why this and other properties in hot areas of town remains vacant.

Why not? From the rendering, it looks like it will blend into the neighborhood well. You know it's possible that a boring ugly box of a building, conforming to zoning requirements at a height of 5 storys, could be built right now. Is that really preferential? Rather than blending into the neighborhood, it becomes a carbuncle on the streetscape, but hey at least it conforms to zoning and is therefore good.

Why is there always a knee-jerk reaction that height is bad, but conform to zoning, regardless of the merits of the proposal, is good. There are plenty of areas in town that conform to zoning, and become an ugly, ugly mess. I wish JCList would evolve and focus more on the design of the building, especially how it interacts with the street, rather than preaching zoning and height limits denouncing anything that doesn't comply, like this fine building.

I think this person is implying if the OP goes to court and loses and gets evicted, other landlords will find out and won't want to rent to them.

Exactly. I've seen the question on rental applications, and I believe it's also public record. Additionally, it's not uncommon for new landlords to call prior landlords as part of the background check on a potential tenant (did they pay rent on time, any other issues, etc.)

If it is added to the map, New Yorkers will start to realize just how convenient Jersey City is to the city. Demand to live here will soar, which I'm okay with that as long as there is massive amounts of real estate development to meet the demand that will come. If development is restricted, rents on existing supply will rapidly increase, and we'll just become another Hoboken while all of us other folks are gentrified out.

I was in the heights the other day, passing corkscrew, and overheard a couple of Brooklynites bragging how they were scouting on the neighborhood because prices were so cheap!
