I love the new Pet - Zone's around the park. Hysterical.

The bb court was again, a complete mess last night. Good stuff.

Also, the last few nights, there have been car loads of people showing up at the park to play basketball. I wonder where they are from that they need to drive to Hamilton Park. If you can't walk to the park, then you don't belong here.

Yes, people who litter do suck and they should be approached when littering, but you can not blame the bb court on this. Most of the people who use it do not litter. I see litter outside of stores, pizzerias, the PATH station, etc. Do you close those places down as well? The bb court is a positive thing and it seems that the people complaining have deeper issues that involve the kids who go there.

I walk by the bb court on a nightly basis. Every single night, between 10 and 11. There is always bottles and trash around the court. ALWAYS.

But yes, I agree. JC as a whole is disgusting. But I hope, that at the very least, we could keep a newly renovated park clean.

BTW? Kudos to Phil Rivo and Dave for cleaning up last night and emptying the garbage cans. It's a shame that residents must clean up after other people.

You're crossing a line here and taking this to an ugly place. Go to the embankment dog area, go to Enos Jones dog area, talk to all those you normally talk to. You will find that each and every person is in favor of the bb court. You know us, you've talked to us about many things. Do you really think because we are in favor of the court we are racists? You're desparate to win an argument that you lost a long, long time ago. Come out from behind this veil and tell us how racist we are in person.

Everyone is thin-skinned but you, right, Vig? Stop whining. Kids littler.

People who are in favor of the court do not live near the court and are not forced to deal with the noise and litter on a daily basis.

Older family friends have expressed to me that in the past this area was a meeting ground for disorderly groups to drink, party, and handle heir differences. In the past, it was group rumbles with maybe some weapons, today it is guns and killings... The natives of Jersey City know that all the downtown area is, is make-up put on the surface of the city. What some of you should do, is instead of hopping on the Path to NYC on a hot summer night, you should jump on the light rail and head south and west,. By doing this, you will be able to see how beautiful Jersey City is. Make sure you get off at the Virginia / MLK stop and enjoy the sights. Most of you wouldn't get off the train..Maybe after your nice little tour of the city on a summer night, you will appreciate the J.C.P.D. and all their efforts.. You all dont realize how safe you really are ...

I'm sure most people are appreciative that things are better than they used to be. No reason to be complacent though and just accept things the way they are. Downtown JC could be a much better place.

Steve:

How can the HPNA help the situation with the littering by the basketball court? I already signed up as a volunteer to help clean the park, but cleaning up after other people on a daily basis is no way to combat the problem. By cleaning up for other people, we are only making the situation worse.

Random litter/trash is expected, and that is what the clean up should focus on taking care of. We should not be responsible for cleaning up the systematic trashing of the basketball court.

What can the HPNA do?

Hold up. So sidewalks, lawns, streets, and wherever all else are fine, but dog runs are sacrosanct?

Can you see why so many people despise the entitled attitude of dog owners?

I never implied that. And no, public areas where people walk, people's private lawns, of course, should be off limits.

Personally, I walk around Hamilton Park, and bring my dog to an out of the way, grassy area. Of course other people bring their dogs to this area too, and there is usually sh!t all over the place. Only then, afterward do I walk through the park.

But not everyone is as wonderful as I am.

However, people suck, and people are lazy and people let their dogs do whatever they want, wherever they want.

Fine people. Fine everyone who litters. Fine everyone who lets their dog sh!t all over the place. Maybe that will work.

If only there were some kind of authority presence that could actually do the fining.

Did they change the rules again? He actually went thru the park and told all owners to get their dogs off the grass. I think it is very confusing beacuse the signs are not up yet.
I would like to know are we or are we not allowed on the grass?

I will not go on it if we are not allowed but it is very hard to enter the park and not have them sniff around the grass.

I was also told that the fine was being raised to some where in the hundreds after the signs go up. Is this true?
Where are the alleged signs?

FINES????? That's smart...fine the law abiding citizens. Don't fine all the mother f-ing scumbags who leave their garbage all over the place.

As for dogs and pee and grass, I always take my dog for a walk to her stomping grounds before I walk through the park. I'm assuming most other responsible dog owners do the same.

As stated earlier in this thread, on Saturday 6/5 at 9 am there was a meeting at the gazebo in HP to organize a regular clean-up effort. I wasn't one of the organizers, but I attended the meeting. Each of us filled out a form with our contact information. They're asking for a minimum commitment of one day per month of maybe 30 minutes of clean-up time. Can one of the organizers please put info here about who to contact, in case anyone else wants to volunteer?

I still have hope that someone will organize an effort to communicate with the basketball players about participating in keeping the park clean. As was already stated here, complaining on a message board won't do much to solve the problem. I'd rather have someone clean up the court (including me) than not have a court at all simply because it gets trashed.

My wife and I signed up as well. But having a group of people clean up after other people on a daily basis should be the last resort.

Nothing is going to change, unless there is some kind of authority presence in the park enforcing laws.

Simply cleaning up after others is not a solution to the problem.

I didn't make the meeting either. Because of my odd work schedule and other commitments I probably won't be able to participate in an organized clean up effort. However, I have picked up a few nights in various areas of the park including both the BB Court and the children's area.

I am sure anyone who cannot participate in an organized effort is welcome to clean up in the park as they can.

Any effort will be valuable and appreciated.

There's no point of arguing with the losers on this site who do nothing but rank on their neighbors who have made efforts to improve the neighborhood.

It's better to take action and take care of this gem we are uniquely fortunate to have.

It's just infuriating to me, that over the years, the bb court was always a problem, and yet through the renovation, this problem could have been solved.

Should the people who spoke out against the bb court be responsible for helping clean up the mess that is left there day after day? I don't think so.

The thing about people from other neighborhoods using the park is that they do not have the same vested interest in keeping the park clean. And just like I would not want to disturb my neighbors late at night, they do not care since they are not our neighbors.

Well, maybe I misconstrued it, but I thought I detected a bias against people not living directly around the park, e.g. black kids from Holland Gardens, and also a sense that only stakeholders, those right in the immediate environs of the park had standing to opine. I am happy to think I am wrong and that my discolure was extraneous.

I'm sure that bias does exist.

But for the people who live right by the basketball court, it is simply a matter of having to deal with yelling, screaming, cursing and a bouncing ball, at all hours of the night. No matter who is causing the disturbance, that's a problem.

The only point about people using the basketball court late at night, when they don't live in the area is that they possibly do not care about disturbing people and they do not care about what kind of condition they leave the basketball court in because they do not live in the neighborhood.

I live right on the park. I know many of the people who live in the area. Would I go out in the middle of the night and start yelling and screaming? No...because I live here and I know the people who I would be disturbing. Someone who lives in a completely different area would not have the same reservations that I have.

And also, how is the Holland Gardens housing complex part of Hamilton Park? Maybe they should find another basketball court to play at, like the one they have in the middle of the housing complex or the 2 right next door.

Maybe I'd like to play basketball every once in a while. Do you think they'd "let me?"

I'll propose a solution: Put a CLUB on the basketball rims at 10pm. Take it off in the morning. I had a court in my yard years back and the neighborhood kids would play games in my yard during the day when we were away. So I put the CLUB there and it stopped them from playing and ruining my garden.

This was a solution proposed last night at the HPNA meeting. Fulup was there and said that you can't rely on the city being responsible enough to put the device on and take it off when it is supposed to be.

Also, something like this was talked about among some of the people during the planning of the park renovation. The reason why nothing like this was installed was due to the fear of the courts being vandalized.

Actually there is a noise ordinance, the park does close at 10pm, and the cops will enforce it if we bitch enough. The problem is you can't part bitch. You cant have the cops enforce part of the law and not the other ( park closeing at 10pm.) So the kids can scream and I guess who ever wants to use the park after 10pm can do so also.

I've called the cops a few times after being woken up at night by people playing basketball. Less than 50% of the time did they actually show up, and when they did, it was almost always at least a half hour after I called.

It's just another known issue that doesn't get addressed.

Parks always have basketball courts, yes I agree. But the basketball court in HP is too close to peoples' homes. Simple as that. I even think the kids' playground is too close to peoples' homes. The screaming and yelling by all the kids gives me the chills. BUT, those kids are usually not still outside screaming and yelling once the sun goes down.

Not that the 10pm park closure is enforced, but even that is too late.

And also, the park shouldn't need to be closed at 10. All we need is some kind of noise ordinance. AND the damn cops to enforce it.

I agree. You'd think our prop taxes would take care of it all, but...they don't. And its crazy to see other states and their wonderfully maintained parks while having much lower taxes. So damn frustrating.

But, I would happily pay another $100 bucks or even more a year to keep the park available to only those who give a shit about its quality. Screw everyone else.

Re: Hamilton Park Renovation - Update

The basketball court is always going to be a nuisance. ALWAYS. Due to the type of person that it attracts. Mostly, a bunch of asshole teenagers.

Besides that, a basketball court should never be allowed so close to peoples' homes. The yelling, screaming and cursing that goes on is disgusting. And the fact that it continues until late at night.

I think that everyone who wants to use the park should have to pay an annual fee for a license to use it. No license? You can't go in the park. You get caught littering, not picking up after your dog? License revoked, get the f out, you can't use the park. Want to use the park again? 10 hours of mandatory park service. Do it again, BANNED for a year.

The park needs some kind of authority to enforce rules. It shouldn't be up to the citizens to go around and make people clean up after themselves. I could just imagine what kind of response I would get telling a bunch of kids to clean up and throw their junk out.

One thing I certainly have noticed about the JCPD. They have got to be the oldest, most out of shape police force I have ever seen. And the ones that I have conversed with do not leave me with the impression that they give a damn about the neighborhood. When my car got broken into a couple weeks ago, I was told with shrugged shoulders, that it wasn't the crime of the century. And that besides filing the report, nothing could or would be done.
