Fulop just posted this on FB:

I want to say thank you to all the volunteers that were apart of this process and believe in the potential for a better Jersey City. With your help we won tonight and I know that this is a tremendous responsibility to bring every community in this great city forward. It is something I will work tirelessly on to make you proud. I can't express how thankful I am.

I mean, if 10000 people vote and one gets 5000 votes, there will be a runoff because he didn't get at least 5001.

So I was down at the county Board of Elections office a short while ago, and apparently, this link is where the results will be posted.

This is, of course, pending the counting of the provisional votes, which will take about a week but is only likely to "matter" if it's a really close race.

And, of course, in Jersey City the mayoral candidate needs 50% plus 1 of the vote to win (not just a majority). If this doesn't happen, there will be a run-off in June.

Let's go Fulop!

All I'm sayin' is, all those pics with Healy and Obama make me sick. If all you have to run on is a payback "endorsement" that doesn't mean jack squat, then you don't have anything to run on.

My guess is that, despite having grown up in Guyana, the name "Khemraj Ramchal" doesn't sound as overtly hispanic as the nickname "Chico" does. Extrapolating a bit, perhaps the Healy campaign is concerned that the JC hispanic population is likely to vote based on demographical/ethnic association.

That car appears to have been traveling completely perpendicular to the flow of traffic - and there isn't a cross street near the store (except Tonnelle, which is like half a block away). How the heck did this happen???

Actually, I take that back - drivers around here continue to amaze me...

I really hope something happens - I live in the CanCo Lofts and these helicopters fly so low sometimes that they're actually lower than our roof - which is only 6 floors off the ground. I've also driven on the Pulaski and been buzzed by them a number of times... Sometimes they're so low that they literally look like they might land on the highway. It's like the pilots are playing a game to see how low they can fly.

Re: Revel bankruptcy - Christie waste of taxpayer dollars

That's not entirely true... According to Bloomberg, the state involvement in the Revel casino was not a cash outlay, but rather, a deal to defer tax payments in lieu of a share of the casino profits. And, it was a deal that was brokered with both Christie as well as the democratically controlled state legislature.

And you can't really blame them for getting involved - if the casino really was already the tallest building in AC before the state came in and helped, and Revel ran out of money, it would have been a huge monument to the decay of the city in general (again, according to Bloomberg, because of casinos that have opened in Philly and NYC). NJ govt. jumping in to help was an attempt to revive Atlantic City, not just help this specific casino.

While I have to say that this is a fear I always have in the back of my head, as I drive on that road, the physics of something that would cause that to happen are pretty highly unlikely. Through the years, I've seen a TON of accidents on there - including two that resulted in overturned vehicles - but nothing even remotely close to a car going flying over the railing.

I too hope this is a prank (albeit a pretty sick one...).

I grew up on Cluck U - first when I was at Rutgers NB, about 25 years ago, then the one in Morristown. It's a franchise and for a LONG time I suggested to anyone that would listen to me that the southern end of Washington, in Hoboken, would be a great spot for one - but someone obviously eventually beat me to it! They're the best one in the area. I've ordered from the one on Communipaw and was generally unimpressed, and with the one near Journal Square all the wings had a strange, mustard-y aftertaste, and a weird consistency.

I've gotten wings from Villa Pizza, near the court house, and they're pretty good - albeit greasier than most. +1 on both Lucky 7's (pretty tasty for 25-cent wings!) and the Black Bear in Hoboken (that Tuesday night deal can't be beat).

I haven't been to the White Star in awhile but I'm looking forward to trying theirs.

Marin Blvd, where it runs under the trains tracks, has flooded for years. I've lived/worked in the area for ~15 years, and any time there's a heavy rain, I know to avoid that intersection (Marin and Observer). I can't say how I'd expect that to have affected Zephyr, but I can certainly see how it could. For me, when I was looking to purchase (and I toured 700 Grove, not Zephyr), I couldn't really see why anyone would want to live right next to the train tracks. Aren't they noisy - both with the train traffic itself, plus the horns as they pull into the station?

Over 100 residents of Downtown Jersey City highrise still homeless after Sandy flooding

Over 100 residents of a Downtown Jersey City residential highrise who were forced to evacuate after Hurricane Sandy hit the region on Oct. 29 are still unable to move back into their homes.

Zephyr Lofts, a condo complex located near the city?s border with Hoboken, suffered flooding in the basement garage that damaged its electrical and fire systems, and there?s no estimate on when the repairs will be complete, according to Rob Rosso, the highrise?s property manager.

?It?s driving us batty,? said Rosso.

About 400 residents of Zephyr and 700 Grove St. ? the adjacent highrises share a garage ? were forced to flee their homes two days after Sandy when city inspectors believed the unprecedented flooding could have resulted in structural damage.

Two engineering firms hired by the owners of Zephyr Lofts and 700 Grove St. concluded the foundation of the buildings is indeed stable, according to Rosso.

Zephyr residents get ?daily updates? on the status of repairs, Rosso said.

A longtime Zephyr resident who asked not to be identified said there?s never been flooding like this in the complex. The resident stayed with family immediately after the storm, but has since rented an apartment in Downtown Jersey City to be closer to work.

?It?s a little bit frustrating,? the resident said, adding the residents? insurance companies are denying claims because the companies contend their policies do not cover flooding.

The residents of 700 Grove St. ? developed by Toll Brothers ? were permitted to move back in last Saturday because that building?s electrical and fire systems are above ground, while Zephyr?s systems are in its basement.

Toll Brothers spokesman Todd Dumaresq said there is an ?ongoing? review of the complex by structural engineers.

?Toll Brothers has been actively involved in assisting in determining remedies and providing resources to get things back to normal as quickly as possible for the residents,? Dumaresq said.

I'm pretty sure we've talked about the garbage train on JCList, previously, but on a quick search couldn't find the treads.

This article, and this one, discuss it.

While they apparently can and do still haul the trash through Journal Square, they aren't supposed to be storing it there, overnight - but certainly have, even after these articles were written.

I grew up in Madison - there used to be a WaWa downtown, for years (but it closed probably ~25 years ago).

I love how the article implies that we've never heard of them. Is there anyone that hasn't gone to Great Adventure, and hit the WaWa (that's pretty much right across from the entrance) on their way in or out??

@Toonces: I find it interesting that some units pay different/variable rates for maintenance fees. Based on your numbers, indeed the rate works out to about 59 c, but the fees being quoted for that unit Malcontent is eyeing do approximate to 64 cents per sq. ft., which is pretty much how it worked out for my father, who also lives in CanCo Lofts.

Sorry - and I know this is also confusing - but depending on who you speak with, our unit square footage can be based on either "internal" measurements, or "external" (meaning, the outside wall). I own a 1BR, the same as what Malcontent is looking at - but I know it with a larger square footage because of how it was originally listed (which was shady, in my opinion), hence my different calculation of the maintenance fees. Thankfully, our rates have only changed once, since the lofts were elligible for occupation (to the best of my recollection), but regardless, we're both in the same ballpark.

We do all pay the same amount.

My experience is that the actual number is a bit higher (~65). IIRC, the tax rate that was quoted during closing was around 1.65%. In a 1300 sq. ft. unit, you would be looking to pay close to 800 in maintenance, plus your taxes, plus parking.

So, if you are looking at CanCo Lofts, do yourself a favor and get better information.

Not sure about your experience, but I live there and on my 700 sq. ft. condo, I pay $411/month in fees, which is $.59/sq. ft. - I rounded up to $.60. Unfortunately, I don't have my tax info handy - particularly since it's paid via escrow by my mortgage lender (so I rarely see the breakdown and don't personally deal with it). I can say that it's certainly not prohibitive, which was of course one of the major reasons I chose to buy here.

Malcontent - I love my condo. One of the reasons our building has the abatement, from my understanding, is that it IS in an industrial area. In fact, our building is divided into 5 "sections", only the second and third of which are currently residential. The first is gutted and slated for buildout, but with no timeline. The 4th and 5th (on the western side) are still industrial and used as such. We do have a shuttle van that runs to JSQ in the morning and evening, M-F - but not all day. Even so, we're only a half-mile (10 minute) walk to JSQ if it comes to that, so only on very hot summer days, and snowy winter ones, is the distance prohibitive at all.

I purchased before construction was complete, and at the time, the developer had an ambitious plan for the area - which has yet to come to fruition. I DO wish there were a bar or two, and restaurants other than Indian, in the immediate vicinity and that were within walking distance. Our location is great if you drive, as we're right next to the Tonnelle Circle, and the onsite parking is one of the three amenities that really attracted me (the other two being that we're dog friendly, and each unit has a washer/dryer).

Every time I've been in Canco, I've been impressed with the apts and building. There aren't any comparable loft like units downtown with the same character and modern loft conversion feel (soaring cielings, slick kitchens, unique layouts). If this style is your thing, you know what I mean. And for the price, it can't be beat. I think the fees there actually include a garage parking space. The gym isn't so great and the billiards room decor is a little cheesey IMO. And you have to be content with your walkable dining options being limited to Indian food.

We pay $165/month for indoor parking - not included in the condo fees.

Listen, I've driven over this road so many times that I could do it blindfolded. However, that doesn't preclude the fact that even in perfect road conditions, it's really dangerous (ask any cop in the area, they all know). For example, I sat for 30 minutes just this Friday evening (~8:30) as they cleared an accident from the southern end of the highway, where the lights DO work, yet an accident bad enough to completely close the southern-bound lanes occured. Any and everything that can be done to make the road even slightly safer SHOULD be. But just in case you've never driven it yourself, yes, even with your headlights on, it's difficult to see the road.
