Re: First female head of PATH system says she will improve rider experience

What a mess at Exchange Place / Harborside today.... easily a couple hundred plus people waiting to board ferry at noontime.

Saw this chaos from roundabout entry to Hyatt... looked over to Paulus Hook, empty. Walked over and paid full fare $12 RT but at that point they were running PH to WFC directly.

Chaos over at WFC at 6:00pm return. People had no idea what slip was what and they were moving ferries off one slip to another... Very surprised PATH people were not at the docks for crowd control on either side. Did see a PATH Cop standing on the Harborside steps looking at the crowd.

Amazed this has been running like this for a few weeks and they still have not figured it out. It's the typical PATH... just on water.

I have not been digging into the details of the poor young woman murdered in SC... but I am wondering if this was a planned setup for robbery/murder.... or just a crime of opportunity for the killer.

I have had strangers at night walk up to my SUV and knock on the window to ask if I was their ride and they would have got in if I said yes. It was actually quite startling... I am sure it has happened to other drivers.

Is this the same historic commision that was supposed to "preserve" the Power House?

The buildings are not located in a prominent area of Paulus Hook where saving them would add something to the character of the neighborhood.

They are on a narrow one way street that creates the the far most district border. Most PH neighbors don't even know they exist .... however we are all aware of the Van Vorst Residential Tower that the city permitted and looms over the neighborhood. Seems like there is something else at play here...

That was pretty funny... with just the right amount of reality to make you wonder?? I remember years ago two April Fools jokes in Boston media... one was about the State Police adding fighter jets to it air wing, supposedly to do high level surveillance of people speeding across the state on the turnpike.

The other was a local tv station broadcasting video of Mount St Helens erupting and saying it was happening at a public outdoor hiking park just west of Boston called the Blue Hills. Created a major panic as people went crazy... the fighter story lingered for a couple years during state budget time while the volcano story got the reporter and producer fired.

Loud construction noise disrupts learning at Jersey City schools

Wednesday, March 20th, 2019 6:32PM

JERSEY CITY, New Jersey (WABC) -- School officials in Jersey City say nearby construction noise is so bad it is a struggle to get through class -- and they want something to be done.

The sounds of progress in the neighborhood have become too much for residents who live near the construction site at Bright and Varick streets.

Neighbors say the corner has sat vacant for years and the construction is for a planned residential commercial development.

One resident says the construction makes his house shake. Another resident said it's so loud the ground shakes and his windows rattle.

So just imagine trying to teach at Frank Conwell middle and elementary schools right across the street.

"We have about 700 kids from 8:30 to 3:00, how can they learn anything with this pounding?" said Jersey City School Board President Sudhan Thomas. "This is ridiculous, this is unfair to the students, it's unfair to the teachers, it's unfair to the neighborhood."

Thomas has complained to the city, saying at the very least, the pounding should be done outside of school hours.

But the construction crew has been clocking out just about the same time schools let out.

Eyewitness News reached out to both the city and construction companies for comment, but did not receive replies.

here is a similar concept in Brooklyn... a food court by any other name is still a food court. the original space was laid out in a very uncomfortable way still somewhat pricey for lunch... but it is NYC

Nope... Would never inject myself between two battling book stores as you surmise.

But looking at the original poster's recent snide comment and the link... it was pretty obvious the original post was fake story.... no idea about the intention?

we are living in the upside-down.

Metropolitan Diary of last Friday afternoon....

While browsing early afternoon in Word, I heard this exchange between a customer (he did make a purchase) and the manager (? perhaps, older guy):

Customer: It would be good if you had more titles -- not just liberal and left -- more of a range.

Manager: This is what we have. Gotta a problem ; tough! (he went from zero to 60 pretty quick)

Customer: I'm just saying. There are a lot of people in this town. The selection is pretty slim.

Manager: Well you can shop elsewhere you creep!

That's verbatim....and it continued a little bit. The customer just paid for his hard cover (I think the place is often too $) and left.

We should all think about the echo chambers we occupy -- well, I do -- and this bothered me alot. Being the only bookstore in town gives Word a certain confidence I guess but I'll think more about just using NYC I think.

Well, it is the right of the bookstore, or any store for that matter, to stock the product it desires. If the customer was not satisfied, shop somewhere else?

At least the manager didn't refuse to service the customer, say like a baker who refused to bake a cake for a gay wedding. Or a county court clerk who refused to issue a marriage licence to a gay couple. Nor did the manager refuse to sell a customer a product in stock, like some pharmacists who refuse to sell Plan B or other contraceptives even though it's already on the shelf.

Please tell me how Word is so bad.

The store is absolutely right to sell what they want. If the conversation was accurate and I was the owner, I would be very upset the way the employee spoke to a customer. Very unprofessional. Especially when my competition is Amazon and B&N online.

I am surprised the customer brought the book after being called a "creep"... that sounds odd.

Agreed... I actually stand in marked crosswalks on Grand Street to help older people and mothers pushing a carriage holding on to toddler hands. Recently a friggin bus blew through an intersection with me and a woman/carriage standing in the middle. That turned out great... a Jersey City cop behind the bus stopped, let us clear the intersection, turned lights went on and he caught the jerk down by Grand and Grove.

The HPHA on sent out emails today talking about the meeting and then the subsequent postponement. I think their position is preservation... however their 180 degree turnaround on their opposition to the Tower built on Van Vorst paint factory property diminished my opinion about that group.

I think preserving the huge trees that obstruct the view of the rundown buildings are more important. Looking at a couple of links in this thread, I understand the nostalgia/historical angles but frankly is just a small side street now. Not a prominent location like Washington St. The Beehive / Old High School or Bank(s) on Montgomery.

I am wondering why anyone would volunteer they got caught up in that scam... as bad as the Nigerian Princes. Supposed ethical issues with the Hulu and Netflix documentaries.

I watched Hulu... thought it was very entertaining and educational, especially how Jerry Media knew early on they were promoting a scam. They seem as guilty as McFarland, the lead grifter! Via social media blitz, they promoted the event and then proceed squelch the few critics trying to warn people off.

Did not watch Netflix when I read Jerry Media were co-producers. Hulu was criticized paying McFarland to appear... they got scammed too, he said nothing on camera that was not from his lawyer's lips. I am sure that Hulu check went right to the lawyers.

Good riddance.... I would say it is an eye sore, but most people do not even know the falling down building is there! I was just walking by the Humanities Building on my way to work the other day admiring what a fine looking building it is for its age.

If it is a parking lot, hopefully it will get all the student/faculty/ visitors parking on Grand Street off the public street and onto their property.

Businesses suffering the most will be McDonalds franchieses and other shitty employers.

It's not going to chase anyone out, but it may lead to price increases for consumers that consume shitty, cheap products.

Tax collection on people making minimum wage isnt going to make a dent in the budget.

Curious what you mean by "McDonalds franchises and other shitty employers". Is there something wrong with those types of jobs... or the businesses themselves?

Here's the actual text of the article... "The references to oversized jewelry, low and belt-less pants, and head gear, particularly, were seen by some as racially specific and led a number of patrons to take to social media to question if the bar is expressly attempting to keep patrons of color out of the premises."

You assume the press is liberal... makes you a conservative... the "press" is middle of the road.

The only ones making a big "national" deal out of this local story is the "liberal press". In your citation, the writer gets to explain the "subliminal racism" in the poster... while other liberal press claim it is "overt racism" So what exactly is it? Kinda like picking between global warming or climate change.

WTC ... talk about the literal "white elephant"... they have dimmed the lights in the building because some genius finally figured out that white is a difficult color to keep clean. Particularly in winter. Consequently people are falling down the steps to the PATH because they not seeing steps or not using the handrails which were installed long after it opened, for obvious safety reasons. And it leaks? LOL
