Thoughts on the games:
Team US sweaters: good or bad?
That US ice dancing couple is crazy looking.
I don't think I can handle watching Bode Miller compete again.
NBC better air some curling action.
Can Shaun White pull it off?

Looking for updated info on this:

What are some current, in operation downtown JC food pantries? Looking to donate more regularly (not just Thanksgiving and Christmas) to these causes but am having trouble finding any updated info on the web.

Also, besides Grace Van Voorst, are there any other places that serve meals to the hungry?

Thanks!

I was on Washington St last week and was surprised how unattractive it is. There are more and more chains popping up and so many real estate offices, I can't imagine how there's enough business for all of them. It's also nearly impossible to find a restaurant on that street that isn't a delivery place or filled with TVs. I know there are interesting gems off the beaten track, but I'd much rather see Newark become something of a hybrid of Park Slope's 5th and 7th Aves.

Have you been to MANA in Journal Square? There are many talented, thoughtful, and successful artists who keep studios there. The place blows my mind every time I visit.

Glad they made a very attractive bar by the path in a space that sat vacant for too long. And we were in there for drinks one Saturday afternoon and served by a great bartender. But, the second time we tried it for dinner and our experience wasn't so great.

We sat for a while and no one came over to take our order. Then when someone finally showed up my bf ordered a beer and the server came back and the keg was kicked so he ordered another. She came back a second time - that one was out too. And she added that they were also out of Guinness. Ok, no big deal. Then we went to order food and at least two appetizers were out as well as one of the mains. It wasn't a busy night. Just really poor planning I guess? The food we got in the end wasn't great anyway. We won't be back unless positive reviews start pouring in.

I'd like to see some regional brews from the Chicago and Midwest. A friend of mine brings back stuff I've never heard of every time he goes to Chicago. We can already taste a lot of East Coast brews at local places like Barcade. Why not be the only local place carrying stuff from the middle of the country?

Can't wait to get beermaking supplies locally. Hope your store has a nice scoop yourself grain setup like Brooklyn Homebrew in Gowanus.

Not sure where in the sky it appears. Saw something about looking low east in the sky before dawn... Looks like tomorrow morning will be your last chance to view it with the naked eye until early December after it swings around the sun:

Went last Monday night and had the Mac Daddy burger with fried mac n cheese and bacon. Really enjoyed it. The fried pickles were also crisp, hot, and tasty.

Good beer selection, nice crowd, wait staff was pleasant. The place is warm and inviting despite the big windows and chilly nights out now.

I like the place for a casual night out with friends, and I'm not alone. The place was packed.

I was only kinda listening at that point but i think a Black IPA was 2nd place and a Lemongrass IPA was first. I got caught up in the list of prizes - the winners can basically eat out every night this week for free!

Ha! I was likened to a Nazi when I said I didn't care what they called the Coop place, as long as it wasn't the miserable shopping experience that Shoprite at 6pm can be.

Looking forward to the new market as I already enjoy all the farmers markets in the area.

There are many really talented local artist in JC who up until this point have had nowhere to show in our hood. I'm excited to see what Freshly Printed brings in the coming months.

I stopped in a week or so ago and the owner showed me around. I was impressed. He's definitely a people person, enthusiastic, and loves to talk art. High quality stuff on the walls and prints and cards for sale in the center bins. Mostly Australian artists are represented. I would love to see some local stuff in there.

They also have silkscreen and magnet printing services.

Where to buy wood interior doors locally?

We're looking to replace the doors in our apartment. We will be doing the hanging, so no contractor needed. Just looking for suggestions of where to buy solid wood doors, modern style, preferably not Home Depot.
Thanks!

What's opening on the first floor of the new rental building up on Newark Ave by 3rd st (i think that's the cross st there)? Looked like it could be a restaurant or cafe or deli since they have some equip going in that looks like a griddle and hood.

Yesterday the fish was two big, beautiful, sushi grade steaks of ahi tuna. We followed the recipe on their website: dredged in a spice mixture and quickly seared. They were delicious.

I have been loving this csa and hope they do it again when it's up. It would be a little more convenient for us if they came to the Grove St farmers market but the quality is worth the extra stop on the commute home.

Signed up and excited to pick up the first installment tomorrow night! We got the small share, enough for one dinner for two people, about 1lb of local fish. It was $90 for six pickups, so $15/lb. I think it's worth it for locally caught seafood. It's hard to get anything but farmraised at the grocery store at that price.

We ordered food one night from Sava Polish and they were running a 10% off campaign. After the order was placed, the owner called us and told us that since we were getting 10% off we could not get the sides with our entrees!

We enjoyed the meal regardless and continue to use Seamless but are reluctant to do Sava again.

Re: New aquarium store on Jersey Ave

The owner took us around the store when it first opened and talked a little bit about the basics of setting up a small fw tank. I had expressed interest in live plants and he suggested getting a CO2 unit for the tank if I wanted to go that direction.

They have a neat selection of fw and sw fish including lots of adorable little puffers. I'll probably go fw and get my stuff there since the tanks at Village Tropical usually have some dead fish floating around in them. As a beginner, I'd like to do everything I can to get off on the right foot, starting with healthy fish.

There was a private party going on in the back room when we went for the $5 burrito weekend deal (which was such a good deal!) and it seemed like they were having a great time.

The folks that work there are really friendly, always happy to serve you.

Re: happy hour

Hamilton Inn has half price draught beer weekdays from 4-7 (and one night, maybe Thursday, Happy Hour is all night). They might have wine and cocktail deals also. You can get a pint of Guinness for $3 and enjoy it at one of their outdoor tables.

York Street Tavern has $1.50 cups of beer (changing selection of domestics, i think) and half price appetizers until 8pm. The cups are probably 8oz but they don't frown on ordering two at once :) so you can have your pint! And you can sit outside.

Tender Shoot on Newark Ave usually has them but as with some of their produce, you have to make sure it isn't rotting already.

Maybe also try the grocer on Grove and First (I think it's First St, across from the soul food restaurant).
