On crowded days there's easiiy more than 200 cars parked in the lots at the southern end. How many people is that, 300, 400, more?

I'm not sure what you mean, "get around the CSX tunnel." It runs parallel to the cut, but you don't have to deal with it. Of course, you could walk through it, but I wouldn't want to be in there if a train come through. The noise would be insane.

Good questions.

On a quick read, the report doesn't seem so bad. I'm skeptical about an amusement part at the south end of LSP, but the idea of turning the train shed into a low rise hotel makes sense. It seems the shed is: 1) falling apart, 2) constructed of asbestos laden concrete. Consequently, 3) it would cost $100M to repair. That's a LOT. Why not restore part of it and build something useful on the rest of the area?

What I worry about is getting traffic to the area and parking.

There's been a long discussion about this mural, and related issues, on Facebook:

https://www.facebook.com/groups/371263 ... malink/10153772762447048/

I just posted these remarks to that discussion:

I see three issues here: 1) aesthetics, 2) public funds, and 3) public space. I'm going to set the first one aside, though it's taken up most of this conversation so far, which is fine. The second is very important, and the example of Philadelphia is germane. But apparently this mural was done with private money, though it was also done with the imprimatur of the City and that deserves the most serious consideration. But that's not what's on my mind at the moment.

I'm thinking about the third issue: public space. The walls may be privately owned, and require the owner's permission for a mural to go on them. But the space is visible to us all. There are a lot of private walls with advertising on them, some ads are relatively small, some are quite large; and, of course, there are billboards, which are created for advertising. We may or may not like how this or that advertisement looks, but we have no say in whether or not it goes on a wall. If the owner approves and the visual meets whatever guidelines there are ? I assume they exist, but I've not seen them ? then the ad is legal and you and I have no say in the matter. And we have no choice but to notice the ad. We can, of course, avert our eyes if it bothers us, but it's there and in our face.

How is the existence of privately funded advertising different from privately funded murals?

Is this a practical thing? Not really. Is it a good thing? I say yes. Again, it will be a nearly unique thing, it will be a huge tourist attraction, it will show a strong commitment to pedestrian and bike infrastructure.

Engineering and cost considerations aside, I don't think it can accommodate enough pedestrian traffic in 3-hour periods (morning and evening commutes to and from work) to make a meaningful dent in mass transit. Still, it's a wonderful idea and I'm glad these guys are pushing it. If you want to do great things, set yourself and impossible goal and go for it. If you keep at it, you'll get something done. Maybe not what you thought, but something interesting nonetheless.

I love the idea.

But what's the capacity of the bridge? For example ? and I'm just spit-balling this ? if we have four people walking abreast, with groups of four spaced 10 feet apart over a span of 5000 feet, and it takes them 20 minutes to walk the mile, that's 6000 people an hour, ONE-way (4*500*3). If people start walking at 6AM the first cohort will arrive at Battery Park at 6:20 AM. By 9:20 AM 18,000 will have walked across. Is that a meaningful number? What kind of dent will that make in daily transporation?

I agree with this assessment, though I must admit to a special bias. I've had a long-term interest in getting a skate park built. Diane Coleman took the ball, pitched to her by June Jones, and got a skate park incorporated into the Berry Lane Park, though it hadn't been there in the original plans.

Beyond this, Jersey City politics is combat. Fulop may have beaten the Healey machine, but that doesn't make him pure or perfect. I can imagine Coleman must have spent many an hour not knowing whether she was coming or going.

New Jersey ranks 49th among US states for its fiscal health
Home away from home
Home away from home

New Jersey?s financial ranking in FY 2013 was based on several areas of financial weakness. The state?s revenues fell short of expenses, and long-term liabilities were two times larger than total assets. Unfunded pension liabilities amounted to $135 billion, with unfunded OPEB adding a further $66 billion and total primary government debt, an additional $40 billion. In total, these three items accounted for nearly half of the state?s personal income.

It just gets better and better. 20150605-_IGP3963 Forest City and G&S Investors (the developers of Metro Plaza) have partnered with Green Villain on putting graffiti inside the old Pesp Boys building before it gets demolished. Pep Boys worked with us on the exterior. 70 artists, 30,000 sq ft of walls (inside and outside), and a century's worth of expertise. 20150605-_IGP3924 Here's a press release on the project (PDF). From Sunday's Jersey Journal:
Quote:
The Pep Boys store that was tagged closed last week and is set to be demolished next week, said Greg Edgell, who worked with the company's district manager to get the go-ahead to tag the the outside of the shop.

"Without getting too philosophical, it's kind of the epitome of graffiti in of itself because graffiti is temporary," said Edgell, founder of an art production company called Green Villain in Jersey City that began around 2008. "It could be five seconds that something's up or it could be five years. So this is kind of just the truest form of that."

The former store is part of a massive redevelopment plan that includes a 35-story tower.

Edgell, 27, first got permission to tag only the back of the building that faces the Hudson-Bergen light rail tracks after pitching the idea to the store's manager in 2014 when the store was still in business. When the shop closed, he was able to get the green light to tag the rest of the walls, Edgell explained.

NYTimes treatment:

WASHINGTON ? Senator Robert Menendez was indicted on federal corruption charges on Wednesday, setting the stage for a bitter court fight and putting his political future in doubt.

Mr. Menendez was charged with eight counts of bribery, which carry up to 15 years in prison on each charge. He was also charged with conspiracy, fraud, and making false statements on government documents, the Justice Department said.

Mr. Menendez is the first senator to face federal bribery charges since another New Jersey Democrat, Harrison A. Williams Jr., was indicted in 1980 in the Abscam scandal.

The charges had long been expected and Mr. Menendez, a 61-year-old Democrat of New Jersey, has promised to fight them. He has offered no indication that he plans to step down or relinquish any power while he goes through that process....

Let the games begin: Who's the bigger sleaze merchant, Menendez or Christie?

Google Cultural Institute gives users worldwide views of Jersey City street art

Some of the best new murals in Jersey City's street art boom are joining the ranks of the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Palace of Versailles in a Google initiative providing digital access to the world's cultural treasures.

Green Villain, one of JC's street art powerhouses, has been hosting entertainment events in the Greenville neighborhood and beyond since 2009, when they were based in an old Clorox Bleach factory. More recently, GV head Greg Edgell has been focusing on helping turn Chilltown into an outdoor gallery.

Last year, Green Villain commissioned works by artists like Enoe, Kem5, Jerkface, SP One, Rime, Post and Mes. Most of the murals can be found in Bergen-Lafayette, and often feature an evolved graffiti style that both adds vibrancy to local neighborhoods while paying tribute to JC's urban roots.

People around the world will now be able to see Jersey City's unique streets through the Google Cultural Institute, which provides first-person walking views (think Street View on Google Maps) of museums and cultural institutions.
