Re: Bad Meats at A&P?

The A&P has been pulling that trick for at least 30 years. My Grandmother had to return chickens to the A&P in Bayonne in the 1970's (closed). The A&P in Journal Square was selling old expired meat in the late 70's, early 80's (closed - thank God). Now you have to watch out for the expired goods being sold in Pathmark since A&P took that over - especially expired soda (which I didn't buy - but I did complain to the company). I did get stuck with expired fish sticks though. Sigh.

When I was a kid in the 60's in another state far, far away, there were sneakers hanging on the wires even then (in a non-gang, non drug dealer town). I always figured it was dumb thing kids do. Like wrapping trees and mailboxes in toilet tissue. hahaha.

That's a little disturbing to me. I don't live downtown. So, are you saying the wealthy crowd should have more police protection because now there are boutiques and places where coffee is served by a barrista? They same place where developers get tax abatements so the rest of people who pay ordinary property taxes have to make up the slack? I vote and pay taxes too. Too bad most of the time the choice of who to vote for turns out too be grim.

How true. Isn't it peculiar how the developers that are knocking themselves out to build luxury condos here always cry broke? Then they renegotiate their tax abatements and the city rolls over and plays dead. Do we really believe they are broke? Of course not. They will not pick up their toys and leave when so many from NYC are hot to live (or at least sleep at night) more cheaply here. Get some backbone politicians and stop putting things off on the little guy who can't afford PR men, high priced lawyers, and sizeable campaign contributions. And, btw, we actually have to pay our property taxes/water bills on time or we will suffer the consequences.

Yes. I am aware that the BJs parking lot is for Bjs & Shoprite, not the mall, if that is what you meant. The lot that is connected to Newport by the pedestrian brigdes is part of the mall. I don't know if the surrouding pay lots are.

I like the place across from the post office on Bergen Ave, it has some interesting stuff, you have to look around in there, its very narrow.

I also go to Fabric Warehouse in Rahway, but they have mostly remants 1-4 yards of various types, craft fabrics, drapery, velvet, challis. Some are on bolts, but the rest is stacked up on long tables like you would stack your linen closet. If you get on their mailing list, they will alert you of the various sales, 30, 40 & 50% off. There are 3 stores, Rahway, Belleville and somewhere in PA. They also have patterns. Their website:

There is also a fabric store behind the dry cleaner on Montomery near Bergen Ave, but I have never been in it. Looks nice from the outside.

Why did they have a huge makeover of their building if they were broke - then ask the city for money? A city thats always running in the red. But its ok - the city will just raise our taxes again (for those of us homeowners who are not rich enough to have a tax abatement, that is).

To eat:

Chicken Delight on Montgomery St. near Begen Ave/McGinley Square - they deliver

Great Wall Chinese at Old Colony Square - no delivery but you can call ahead for pick up.

Prince of Pizza on Bergen Ave at McGinley Square (not sure if they deliver)

Monteleone's Bakery on Newark Ave near Kennedy Blvd.

Nice little fruit and vegie store corner of Fairmount and Bergen.

Places to go:

Liberty State Park

West Side of Lincoln Park - to see the river and the birds, especially the egrets.

I loved the Canton! It was my favorite restaurant and I have loads of those little glasses and things they used to sell at the cash register. It was so quiet and the decor was just great - (for those who never went there maybe recalling the 1940s). I loved the tea and the wonton soup with the leaf floating in it. Sigh. But you can still see parts of it in the movie "To Wong Foo, thanks for everything, Julie Newmar" in the chinese restaurant scene.

Drive down Rt. 169 (440 South) towards Bayonne. Turn at Pulaski Street turn off. Go down Pulaski towards "Waterfront Observation Area (I think on Port Jersey Blvd). You can see the plane at dock right across water in Jersey City. Its about a block away if it was on land.

Re: What's worse for JC, Luxury Condos or Hipsters?
Just can't stay away
Just can't stay away

I'd rather see the hipsters than the luxury condos. I own my house, but who is to say that some developer won't make a "campaign contribution" and wow - suddenly my neighborhood is blighted to make way for more luxury condos! Yes, there are laws about these things, but we all know how that works, don't we?

Yes, the average working Joe & Jane homeowner should be concerned, but not about the guys in the horn rimmed glasses.
