Jersey City election 2013: Fulop wins backing of healthcare union The state?s largest healthcare union has endorsed Jersey City mayoral candidate Steve Fulop. Ann Twomey, president of the Health Professionals and Allied Employees, says in a statement from the Fulop campaign that the city needs elected officials like Fulop, who represents Ward E on the City Council. ?Steven Fulop has proven himself an effective advocate for the Jersey City community in protecting access to health care and deserves the support of nurses, healthcare workers and patients,? Twomey says in the statement. HPAE represents 12,000 nurses and health professionals statewide, including employees at Christ Hospital on Palisade Avenue. Fulop is challenging incumbent Mayor Jerramiah Healy in the May 14 race, when the mayoralty and all nine council seats are up for grabs. Healy?s other challengers are Abdul Malik and Jerry Walker.

Jersey City startup creates build-an-app platform for small business owners
|
||||

Jersey City -
It?s not that web developer Angelo Stracquatanio doesn?t want entrepreneurs as clients. He just hates watching them wince when they hear how much custom mobile applications cost. Stracquatanio networks with plenty of small business owners through Rising Tide Capital, a community development nonprofit that mentors entrepreneurs in his hometown of Jersey City. Once the budding CEOs find out he knows how to build mobile apps, the conversation quickly turns to whether he can build one for them. "If I were to quote them a custom development fee it?d be $15,000 to $20,000," he said. "And obviously for an up-and-coming entrepreneur, that?s out of their price range." Mobile devices have exploded in popularity and while entrepreneurs have been quick to use existing applications to build their businesses, know-how and cost have prevented many companies from reaching customers on their phones and tablets, according to a study by market research firm Vanson Borne. More than 90 percent of survey participants said using mobile devices and existing apps puts them at a competitive advantage, the study found, but only 29 percent had built their own app while more than half doubted their ability to do so. In an effort to knock down that hurdle and launch his own business, Stracquatanio raised $15,000 from angel investors and used it to found MainStreet Apps. The business lets companies customize their own mobile apps by choosing from a menu of in-demand features like task lists for clients, questionnaires, appointment schedulers and directions to brick and mortar locations. MainStreet makes money from subscription fees; once a business wants to launch its app, it pays between $39 and $185 per month depending on how many of their customers use it. The four-employee operation, counting Stracquatanio, works out of a Jersey City office and has been using the founder?s ties to Rising Tide Capital to run beta tests. Local businesses who agreed to act as MainStreet?s guinea pigs have been able to use the service for free. Its slow and gradual roll-out has been strategic "Most of our actual paying customers are all in the New Jersey or Manhattan area at the moment," Stracquatanio said. "In terms of our user base, it?s upwards of about 200 mostly local businesses in this area that we chose to have a close, personal relationship with instead of amassing a huge, anonymous user base." For now those customers include mostly private sports clubs, athletic teams, weight loss centers and personal trainers because MainStreet decided the two-way communication features in its apps would be a good fit for trainers or coaches interacting with clients remotely. It makes sense that companies in the service industry would find value in the features MainStreet offers, said Brian Donohue, co-founder of Echolocation, an app that helps users discover people, events and businesses near their location. "I think targeting businesses that offer services who have clients and they?re using an app to keep in touch with them works," said the Brooklyn-based Fort Lee transplant. "They?re essentially streamlining the process by creating templates. Websites were very similar in the mid- to late-90s. It used to be very expensive to have a website built, but more and more tools emerged to help people make their own." Tom Murphy, CEO of Green Lion Digital, said he?s seen a swell of demand for customized mobile apps from the restaurant, retail and health industries. His 30-employee consulting firm based in Wyckoff helps small businesses develop and deploy digital strategies. "There?s a huge amount of attention that?s been turned towards mobile. A lot of clients are interested in having some type of app for their business," he said. "Having one built can vary anywhere from $5,000 to $100,000. It just depends on the functionality they want built into it." If customers want their app to work on both Apple and Android devices, it gets more expensive. When customers balk at those prices, Murphy and his team look into applying responsive design to the business owner?s website. It?s designer shorthand for giving a website the ability to tell whether someone is using a computer, tablet or smart phone. Then it can display a version of itself that?s optimized for that platform. For example, things like buttons and menus get larger for small smart phone screens. When hiring an app developer won?t wreck a business owner?s budget, they?re usually eager to start telling people to download it. "They?re excited to get it out into the market and play with it and chat it up," Murphy said. http://www.nj.com/business/index.ssf/ ... y_startup_wants_apps.html" rel="noopener external" title=""> http://www.nj.com/business/index.ssf/ ... y_startup_wants_apps.html

Nearly 200 water fountains in Jersey City schools contain lead above fed standards
|

http://www.nj.com/hudson/index.ssf/20 ... 0_water_fountains_in.html
Nearly 200 water fountains and sinks in Jersey City public schools contained lead contamination above federal environmental standards during recent testing, according to a report unearthed by a Jersey City parent. One of the water fountains had lead contamination at levels more than 800 times the federal Environmental Protection Agency's standard for lead in drinking water, while 37 water fountains and sinks contained levels of lead more than 100 times the standard, the report shows. A hand-washing station in School 3's cafeteria had four times the standard, according to the report. A school district spokeswoman said the water fountains and sinks in question had been shut off years ago, but that doesn't appease Ellen Simon, a founder of the advocacy group Jersey City Parents for Progress. Simon, who unearthed the newest report, calls the lead issue a "black eye" for the school district. "My fear is that, long term, years from now, someone may forget why those fountains were shut and turn them back on," she said. Simon also raised another concern: sinks in the district?s pre-K classes ? where toothbrushing lessons are part of the curriculum ? were not tested. Some 1,017 fountain and sinks were tested from October 2012 to January 2013. The worst fountains and sinks were found at Schools 5, 9, 23, 25, 27, 29 annex, 31 and Zero Tolerance, an alternative program at the Bright Street Academy, the report shows. School 25 on Kennedy Boulevard had the most problems, with 20 sinks and fountains exhibiting lead levels above federal standards, while School 41 on Wilkinson Avenue had 18, according to the report. Other locations with high lead levels include an ice machine at Snyder High School (with lead 20 times the federal standard), a nurse?s sink in School 16 (three times the standard) and a water fountain on the seventh floor of the district?s central office (one time the standard). The EPA recommends action when lead levels in drinking water exceed 15 parts per billion, according to the agency's website. Some 174 water fountains and sinks in the school district met or exceeded that standard, according to the latest round of testing. "Water fountain 206" in Zero Tolerance had levels at 12,800 parts-per-billion, or 853 times higher than the federal standard. Xiaoguang Meng, a Stevens Institute of Technology professor who studies water contamination, was flummoxed when he learned of that result. "Wow!" Meng said. "That is an insanely high number." Parents in schools where high lead concentration has been found in water from sinks and water fountains should send their kids to school with water bottles and urge them not to drink tap water inside the school, he said. If it were just one water fountain, then the problem could be considered isolated, but multiple water fountains and sinks in one school means there is a larger problem, Meng added. Exposure to lead in water could cause delays in a child's mental development, he warned.

Very entertaining and worth the price of admission.
To sum up: two candidates (Malik & Walker) answered most questions with some version of "I will come up with a plan." One candidate (the mayor) saying he would 'continue' to work on it, and one (Fulop) pointing out that he already had a plan and it is posted on his web site. Walker also stated that his 'plan' was to ask the community for input before doing anything and also to study everything. Malik's main contribution was to babble on unintelligibly and in doing so make Mayor Healy look positively statesman-like by comparison. I didn't know too much about Malik prior to tonight, but he was dreadful. He glad-handed everyone afterwards and when it was my turn I told him, "you were terrible and I would never vote for you." He was cordial and responded "I already knew that." So, he laid on the charm, but that didn't dispel his nearly complete lunacy. The mayor got some good lines in. He was best when speaking about recreation and public spaces. Walker appeared lost, but his supporters didn't seem to notice. Fulop was in command and laid out his case nicely, but didn't come on too strong. He had the advantage of going last in closing statements and played it well. Lots of candidates and supporters in attendance (not surprisingly). Bill Matsikoudis (Healy Campaign Manager and also the City's attorney) looked down right, dare I say, evil. Dan Levin, Peter Brennan, on the Healy side (I wouldn't recognize the rest of his team) and Joyce Watterman, Danny Rivera, Chico Ramchal, Rolando Lavarro, and Candice Osborne on the Fulop side were in attendance. Members of the audience were invited to write down questions, but only four questions were chosen. A little disappointing.... but things moved along at a good pace. Kudos to the moderator (Greg?) Hanlon, who kept things under control. And, kudos to the audience. Besides groaning audibly every time Malik was about to speak, they were well behaved. I have to say that Healy, Fulop and Walker all came across as very likeable. Fulop even said he "liked" Mayor Healy after working with him all these years. But, he also said that liking someone was not enough -- the goal is to move the city forward.

The issue is not freedom of religion but rather freedom FROM religion.
It is the stated goal of this church to impose their values on everyone else. Should we be concerned? It appears so. http://www.usachurches.org/church/hope-center-tabernacle.htm "We have dedicated our ministry and all our resources toward turning our city upside down and positively impacting it for Christ, something we have been doing for almost a decade. Through our 2006-07 Turning Our City Upside Down campaign we will train hundreds of other churches and ministry leaders in the greater New York City metroplex area to do the same. It is the job of the Church to challenge society and promote revolutionary change in our neighborhoods, our schools and our government."

But, most of what I am seeing in these emails are discussions of how Steve Fulop was doing a good job, holding board members feet to the fire to get things done, and trying to get materials and programs for the schools. The whole thing is a non-story, since this was a fishing expedition by a Healy operative to try and get dirt on Steve (by requesting the emails). This obviously failed, since the emails put Steve in a good light and show him doing work that Healy should have been doing.
