I am looking for a bakery or other store that sells chocolate covered strawberries. Does anyone know of any stores in Journal Square or Newport areas?

There is an article on CNN today talking about how the South Bronx was transformed from what they called "America's worst slum" back in the 70's. If you look at the pictures you can tell that this transformation was necessary. I have not been in Jersey City all that long but from what I have heard there were areas of Jersey City where no one wanted to walk down the streets and there was massive gang and drug activity.

Are you suggesting that Jersey City would be better off if people did not develop the area?

Perhaps this discount had nothing to do with religon at all. On Saturday's and Sundays there are hundreds of people that go to the Stanley for their services. I would think they gave discount parking prices because these people were attending a large event and without these people parking in the garage it might be less occupied.

You see discounted parking for events all the time. If you are not going to the event then you do not get the discount. It seems like a good business opportunity to fill up your garage.

Re: Running on the Jersey City streets

I want to comment about the person who said the streets are not meant for sport activities. It sounds like you are saying that sidewalks are not made for people. It's not like I am trying to have a football game on the sidewalk outside White Castle. That would be insane but a simple thing as running from one place to the other just doesn't seem like a crazy thing to do.

Anyway I will continue to run on these Jersey City Streets and will just be mindful of my surroundings and know what to expect. I don't feel unsafe I was just venting about my experience that day.

Running on the Jersey City streets

I ran last night on Kennedy blvd and there are some interesting characters out there. All in one evening I had a homeless person ask me for money while I was running, had a group of teenagers try and run with me as a joke, got strange stares from people on the street confused why I would run in a tank and shorts and men whistling at me as I go by.

Can't a girl just run on the streets of Jersey City listen to her Ipod and focus on running faster and stronger.

Anyone have any good routes they run where they can run in peace?

Does anyone know about this area? I am considering purchasing a condo in the building and wanted to get some feedback?

Does anyone know market values for condos in that immediate area?

How much do you think you can rent out the unit for? There is a unit that is approx. 600 sf and is a converted 2 br.

Any feedback would be appreciated.

Re: Free parking near St Johns Condo Complex - JSQ??

I agree that $95 is cheap compared to other parking garages in the area. I used to park in the lot but I decided to give up my space and use the $1,140 a year on other things. I just hate paying for parking. I was just looking for an alternative for the one day every two weeks or so that I can't easily find a spot.

I think I am going to just drive around within a couple block radius and see if there are any other streets that do not have resident parking.

Free parking near St Johns Condo Complex - JSQ??

I gave up my parking spot because I felt i was wasting money when street parking is usually available. It is slightly a pain to move my car for alternate side of the street rules but I have gotten used to it (for the most part).

Today I could not find a spot at all and drove around for 40 minutes only to drive to work and pay $15 to park.

Does anyone else know of any other spots close to St Johns condos that do not have resident parking that are free.

Since I live in St Johns condos there are no jc resident parking near there and unfortunately I dont qualify for the spots across rte 139 because its a different zone that I live in. Are there other streets that have alternate side parking but do not require jc parking permit.

Let me know.. I would be forever grateful.

Who the hell leaves a $100,000 watch in a car anywhere - especially Jersey City. If I had a $100K watch I would handcuff it to myself.

Thats good to know about the three trains. I was confused if Airtran went right to the Path Train in Newark. Seems easier to take a cab.

The last time I flew into Newark I paid $45 for a taxi from the airport to Journal Square. I think this charge is quite high for a 10 minute trip.

I am looking for a different way to get home from the airport and wanted some suggestions.

Has anyone taken the Airtran to Newark and then the Path home?

Please let me know your experiences or if you know of a cab company that is cheaper than the $45.

Thanks.

I did read the article and guess I missed the part that said he was 20. I still don't see how they can try and go after so many people in the suit and be successful.

It is unfortunate that this woman now has to live in this condition. I don't think anyone else except the driver should be responsible for this crash. People have to take responsibility for what they did but going after people who were not involved does not seem to make sense.

Perhaps she should add the car manufacturer, his parents because they allowed this person to be born, his grade school, his church for not teaching him about the value of human life... seriously when does it stop.

This man made a reckless decision and should be the only one held responsible.

Re: Atlantic City by Public????

Home away from home

I realized I never gave an update on my trip to AC via public. I have some advice for anyone who might think this is a good idea.... DON'T DO IT!!!!!!

I got on the bus in front of White Castle in Journal Square at 1:15 or so and did not get off the bus in Atlantic City until close to 5PM. The bus stops at almost every other street corner throughout all of Jersey City then does the same thing in Bayonne. The bus even makes a trip over the Goethals Bridge and picks up more passengers at two stops in Staten Island, then back to NJ for the trip to AC.

The bus seemed to have a lot of regulars and was filled with mostly old people. Once you get to AC you have to wait for the casino staff to come out and give you vouchers for food or gambling. It did not take very long but it just delayed my gambling a bit more.

It was fairly inexpensive to get down there but I dont think I would go again even if it was free.

I guess if I was completely desperate and needed to make the trip again I would have someone drop me at the last stop in Bayonne to shave about an hour off the trip.

Next time I will be sure to drive. Oh and I definetly did not come back a winner either :(

I keep passing by the corner of Cottage and JFK and they just started remodeling the space on the corner. They just ripped off the facade and now the space looks completely different. It looks like the building might have been interesting before with nice brickwork. Does anyone know what used to be at this location? Im just curious.

There is a school on 9th Street in Hamilton Park that has signs posted saying you are not allowed to park there during school hours unless you work for the school. Is this parking open to the public during the summer hours? If I park there will I get towed?

It's just so tempting to get free parking. Let me know.

Thanks.

Re: St Johns Condominiums

I live in 201 as well.. It's a great place to live in my opinion. The whole property which includes 201, 225 and 10 Huron are all in a gated complex. There is a pool and a fitness center that cost additional money above your maintenace fee. Pool is apporx. $175 for the summer and the gym costs $75 for the year. The gym is kinda crappy but for $75 what do you expect.

The buildings have a mix of people - young professionals, older couples and singles that have been here for years. Its very safe here. There is 24 hour security and doormen in each of the buildings.

Unfortunately for me the prices have decreased in the last two years. There are studios, one bedrooms and a handful of two bedrooms. From what I know one bedrooms range in size from around 650 sf to 925 sf, two br's are a bit larger - prob 1,000 - 1300 sf and studios are 400 sf or so.

One br prices can range from $250 - $300K or so and monthly maintenance depends on the size of your unit. I have a 925 sf unit and pay $436 a month for maintenance which includes heat, air conditioning, hot water and all the security guards, doormen, grounds etc.

Taxes are about $3 - $4K depending on the size of your unit.

Well thats all I can think of. Let me know if you want more information.

I dont know the answer but there is this great site called mapmyrun.com with a whole bunch of different routes. You basically just put your location and the distance you would like to run and you can review runs that other people have run.

Its fantastic.

Just wanted to share that with my fellow runners :)

Re: Dentist Recommendation

I dont have a recommendation but can tell you where you should not go... Newport Center Dental in the mall is the absolute worst. If you go in for a 11 am appt you are lucky if they see you by 12:30.

Then they just tell you that they are backed up or running late. Apparently they have dentists that show up whenever they want despite the appts they have scheduled.

There are plenty of places that are rented out directlty with the owner. I am actually a landlord of a 3 family house and never thought someone would doubt that I owned the house.

Interesting...

Re: Where can I find affordable Condos?
Home away from home
Home away from home

I live in St johns condos (201 st pauls) and its moderately affordable for this area and I feel it is a safe area. I spent $310K two years ago for 910 sq feet and my condo is worth around $295K now. When I looked for my place I looked all over Jersey City and checked out about 30 condos. At the time downtown was untouchable with condos in the $390 - $450K range for about 600 - 700 sq. ft. I wanted more space which is why i went with St Johns.

To the left of the path you can get a place near Lincoln Park which is not as safe as the St. Johns area in my opinion and also a 13 - 15 minute walk to the path. The bright side is that condos are cheaper in that area. When I looked they were selling for about $25K cheaper than what I purchased. They also have busses that take you to the Path along Kennedy.

Some parts of the Heights are good as well but you also have to deal with busses or the light rail to get to the PATH.

I guess it depends on what you are looking for. I have a fantastic realtor if you are looking for a suggestion.
