Glad to know I'm no the only one. It is very strange that JC has no good old school Irish pub. Not that I'm a big fan of Hoboken, but they have more than enough there, and have for a long time. We're next door, and there's been plenty of Irish in JC's history, you'd think there'd be a few around.

I like White Star alot, but it's hardly a traditional pub, plus its size and menu are limited. Skinners is decent, but grossly overpriced, and quality can be inconsistent. Baja is also overpriced for standard mexican fare, if I'm going to spend a pretty penny on mexican I'll head into the city and go to Rosa Mexicano.
Also adding a bbq joint to my wish list.

PBW: "Comparing JC to Portland doesn't work on all levels. They don't have a much bigger, well know (for restaurants even) city right across a river."

Point well taken, but I know there are others out there who are looking for the same things as me and might prefer to stay in JC than sit on the PATH or in tunnel traffic.

Portland is hardly "off the grid", nor completely surrounded by hicks. That being said, obviously I too would rather live in such close proximity to NYC, thats why I'm here.

As for what options I'd like to have here, I would love at least one traditional pub with consistently good hearty food and a cozy atmosphere that is not charging NYC prices. How about a mexican place where we can sit down for dinner and margaritas, without (yet again) paying like we were across the river. There are any number of other options that would be great to have here. The problem with many restaurants in JC is that instead of keeping it simple they get a little too creative at the expense of consistent quality, the only thing that is consistent across many of the downtown restaurants is the fact that you can easily pay the same thing for dinner here that you would in Manhattan or the fancier parts of Brooklyn. And yes, I am aware of the fact that there are a few truly great places around here, and I really appreciate the good food that is available, there are a couple places downtown that I enjoy, and obviously the indian food in JSQ is the best you can get in the NYC area, I just want few more options, and I don\'t think its too much to ask.

I'm from Portland, and whenever I go back I realize how much I miss all the good options for food and drink, JC is a culinary wasteland compared to this little city, which only has around 80,000 residents. Pathetic.

While they're at it why don't they add some more massive underutilized parking lots (think Montgomery east of Grove), if they're going to make this city even less walkable, why not go all out? In all seriousness, bike lanes would be way more useful, and why the hell aren't they doing the landscaped median?

Go to JC Animal Hospital on West Side ave, we use them for our dog and they are always good with him even though he is not friendly with strangers. Whatever you do, stay away from the animal hospital in Hoboken, they will rip you like crazy.

Edgewater is a bit too far because of the fact that there is no direct route when driving. It is not very far distance wise, but it always takes a looooong time to get there; you have to factor in the lights and traffic that you will encounter, it is too much of a pain for me to go there regularly despite the fact that I love their products

Tried to go here a few times, as the food is so often recommended. Each time there was no table available. While I don't mind waiting for a table occasionally, the host who greeted us was a complete a**hole, and basically blew us off rather than tell us how long the wait would be and try to make us comfortable. I got the same attitude when I called once to find out if they take reservations, (they don't) and they sounded like I was wasting their time by calling and asking. So, F-you M&P! If you want my $ then you could have tried a little harder to make us welcome.

I feel like it might be ambitious to believe that citizens can really affect politics in a place like Jersey City, or Hudson County for that matter. These people are part of a machine, and that machine seems to operate according to its own desires. That being said, It doesn't hurt to try!

The plan sounds great when you read it, but apparently all the city is capable of is issuing these types of things, rather than effectively encouraging development. The fact that this neighborhood is so underdeveloped is absurd, it contains convenient mass transit options and is 3 miles from Manhattan. We are no farther away than Park Slope in Brooklyn but the disparities are incredible. All NY neighborhoods this close to Manhattan have gentrified and developed incredibly during the last 10-15 years, yet all journal square gets are plans.

They had control for quite a while, but they kept changing the plans to allow for more and more units and asking for better incentives. It is probably true that construction has been put off because of the economy, but it seems to me that an massive empty lot collecting trash for years on end is going to hurt property values for everyone in the neighborhood. Worse than unrented units? Who knows. But during the approval process the developers enlisted the support of hudson county unions who came out to encourage the project on grounds of it providing jobs, those jobs are sorely needed now. Maybe instead of allowing Healey's buddies to sit on property until they feel like developing it, the city should find someone who is willing to start construction, and who knows, maybe it would be a more appropriate plan than these behemoths. And lets not forget that the later the project is started, the later the city will be getting any tax money.

Forget sweeping change, any change would be surprising to me considering nothing has really changed at city hall. The same people who gave out the contract for the JSQ towers are still there, if my memory serves me it was a no-bid contract and one hell of a deal with millions in tax abatements. The best part is that right before the mayoral election a bunch of construction equipment moved into the site and appeared to be doing something. Immediately after the election it disappeared and has not returned since. They really must think we are idiots.

does anyone know what the hell is going on with the JSQ towers project? Its pathetic that construction hasn't even started. Despite the fact that the whole thing is incredibly oversized and out of character with the surrounding neighborhood, anything is better than a vacant lot sitting for years in what should be prime real estate.

Broadway Gulf did an excellent job for me, and they were very helpful and honest. Totally agree that pepboys are inept. Midas in Journal sq will try and rip you off, they charge exorbitant prices for their parts and if you bring your own they will charge extra labor to make up for it. My brother had some expensive work done there, the problem did not go away and a trusted mechanic later told him it appeared nothing had actually been done.

They can charge whatever they want, but $30-$40 is about right. Legally nyc taxis do not have to take you to NJ, though they do have to take you anywhere on Long Island, go figure.
Journal sq to newark airport is $25 with Budget limo

Re: McGinley Square

Just can't stay away

I live in McG sq, a block off of bergen, north of montgomery, and have been living in the neighborhood for 2+ years. We bought our 1700 sq foot house for under $400k, and saw plenty in the area in the 300-400 range, price depends on condition. I would imagine that giving the economic climate property is currently selling for a bit less. Olean ave is a bit far from Mcginley sq, so I cant speak to the specifics of that particular area. In the time I've been living here I have heard of at least 2 robberies and a shoothing on summit, b/w montgomery and academy, it is certainly not the safest part of the neighborhood, In general I would stay west of summit and east of westside ave. The bar and restaurant selection in walkable distance is pretty sad, particularly if you are coming from Greenpoint. There are 3 dive bars (including the JSQ Pub), and standard takeout food, but not much else (besides a great vietnamese place on bergen, just south of montgomery). The walk to the Path is very convenient, you can easily get to Herald Sq in the city in 35 mins from Mcginley Sq, including the walk to the path (longer if you are south of Montgomery). The neighborhood really varies by block, definitely better to live on one with high owner occupancy. I wouldn't say that there is a really strong sense of community here, but that probably varies by block also. Good luck

I do love their steak tacos though!

Well it can't be because its racist, because spanish is a language not a race, and it is a language spoken by people of many different races such as white people from spain and their descendants in Latin America, Indians native to Latin America, black descendants of African slaves in Latin America etc. as well as people from other regions who have learned spanish for whatever reason. Latino/hispanic is not a race, its an ethnic group.

Glad I'm not the only one who thought it strange that beacon residents "need" take a shuttle to JSQ, its only a 10 min walk, maybe a bit longer if you're slow, but really not bad at all. And Mercer is only 1 block north of Montgomery.

I don't know about crime, since neighborhoods change so much block to block, but its a beautiful neighborhood architecturally. I live on the other side of Montgomery and am jealous of all the victorian brick houses over there whenever I drive down Summit. Commute wise, its quite a long walk to the PATH, but if you have a bike it wouldn't be bad, don't know if you'd want to rely on the buses.

Re: Why don't JC restaurants/bars do that well?
Just can't stay away
Just can't stay away

Maybe if JC had a better variety of places to go more people would stay/come here. We have manhattan priced places (overpriced for JC) with pretentious menus, crappy cheap places (not necessarily a bad thing if that's what you're expecting) and not too much else. We should have an abundance of midrange places with affordable, interesting and original but familiar food (yes there are a few of these places around, but not nearly enough). Many people in JC can not afford or don't see the sense in spending $10+ on a sandwich. And how about more laid back pub style places, almost all in JC double as sports bars, and not everyone enjoys listening to a game full volume while trying to enjoy a drink.

I'd love to show support if I felt things were actually happening, but this project was originally green-lighted when, in 2006? That's pathetic! JSQ is a mess, its incredible that nothing has been developed here sooner, the population is in the neighborhood to support more restaurants, bars etc but no one can get things together to encourage growth, and what growth is going on, namely this oversized tower development, has been so ridiculously slow in geting going that it seems like a big joke.
