They wanted everyone to know that the menu and phone number is still the same and you can order for delivery just like the old location.

Please show them your support and get your next meal there. I will be ordering for dinner!

Talked to them yesterday, they said everything on the old menu is available. So glad they're back up and running so quickly, they're great guys!

For authenticity, Grand Sichuan on Grove delivers. Pork Soup Dumplings, Dry and Spicy sauteed Chicken, Smoked Tea Duck, Garlic Eggplant, to name a few.

Whatever you do, do not order any items from the "American Chinese Food Dishes"

Gui Zhou spicy chicken, dan dan noodles and the cumin lamb are my favorites, and they travel pretty well. Soup dumplings are awesome in the restaurant but I've always been afraid to order them delivered!

We've just started ordering from Rasoi, and the portions are HUGE.

You can actually hire people through U-Haul! I think it's called "Moving Helpers"? You can read reviews, see insurance and so forth, and it's flat-rate depending on services and who you pick. I don't know how well it works on short notice, but I had a very good experience a couple years ago -- I was moving out of a building with a freight elevator time limit, and they got everything in the truck with plenty of time to spare. We drove the truck, the guys met us at the new apartment and unloaded... and then we had the truck to ourselves for the rest of the day, so we could do an Ikea run.

Glad to hear they're expanding! They've been full up every time we've tried to go recently. Construction probably made sense timing-wise, too, since the owners are related to the folks opening Word next door.

Keep in mind, FOL is a group of very active volunteers. But they are volunteers, so their time is limited. But they are devoted and knowledgeable (they also manage the space rentals for weddings, etc. which also bring them income - its booked a lot for that which is another reason there isn't programming every single weekend, an d they do maintenance/repair projects on Saturdays as well around all this). This is why I and others suggest making the key FOL people with most experience full time staff, with the addition of professional (individuals, not a "management company") to fill in the other needed areas that FOL people may lack. A full time staff of skilled people would be a world of difference, just not a management conglomerate who is only in it to make their own profit, and which would totally block out community involvement/input at all.

They've also been limited by the technical demands of a live show -- for events like the Jeff Mangum or Beck concerts all the stage equipment had to be rented, trucked in and assembled. They finally own some real stage gear now, but I don't know if it's operational yet. That, no AC and the balcony being closed seem like the big holdups.

I'd much rather see it kept local, with the FOL and a couple more pros than some huge organization like Live Nation where the booking fees double the cost of a ticket. Didn't I read a while back that the guy who was the booker for Maxwell's was interested in booking stuff at the Loews?

This is exactly my objection. They want to charge ~$1800 for 300sqft! No one will pay that when you can get a real apartment here for that price, so they'll have to lower rents, and then there won't be budget for upkeep or the activities for residents they're promising, and instead of a "hip dorm for adults" it'll just be a poorly-maintained SRO. And so a building supposedly designed to alleviate blight will instead create it.

Super sad about this. The owners are great. We'll have to stock up on fried chili oil...

We always rent from them, didn't know they'd deliver the car to us! That's awesome, thanks.

Unless it's a peak holiday period, they're way cheaper than Zipcar for the day.

Maybe it's a generational thing. It's not that the under 30, urban-dwelling crowd would specifically be impressed with somebody NOT owning a car; it's that somebody owning a car is not impressive and not expected.

I'm part of that generation. I owned a car many years ago in another state; my partner never has. Aside from a couple people who need to drive for work, our friends are all carless too. We rent a couple days a year for skiing/hiking, but I can't imagine having to deal with a vehicle on a daily basis.

NO f***ing way am I gonna do Zipcars and slow ass trains. For me it's quick jaunts to the shore or country or where ever I like. You "no cars" crowd can squeeze some fun out of Liberty State Park. Ugh. I'm sure chicks are impressed with the "I don't own a car" line.

Acting like there's nothing to do around here is ridiculous. I'd much rather see a show in Manhattan than sit in shore traffic for hours.

And what's wrong with Zipcar? Asking seriously.

I am pretty sure that Newark Avenue ran thru that property before the Gregory Apartments were built. Restoring that as a pedestrian connection would be great - especially if whatever is built had shops opening on to the new street.

It did indeed, as did now-entirely-gone Gregory St. Here's a cool map from 1883 if you're curious what was there a very long time ago. Everything I've seen planned for the site has included ground-level retail, not sure how much of it is still likely to be built though. Great to know the cleanup will be done soon at least.

Ah, I see. I knew that area was in the heart of some of Jersey City's worst chromium contamination, but didn't realize someone had actually started the process of clearing that space. I wonder when and if the clean-up will ever be completed or if it would be possible to get federal (Superfund?) money to do it.

I would also hope the plans included a new street or at least a pedestrian walkway connecting Montgomery and Columbus between Warren and Marin.

It's (luckily) the only Superfund site downtown -- they brought in the contaminated dirt as backfill during construction. The company that did the damage is paying for the cleanup, but as it's one of many contaminated sites it may be a couple years. If you want more info about the cleanup effort, here's the official site: http://www.chromiumcleanup.com/

Plans to do just that have been in the works for a decade at this point (there are renderings in the rental office if you're curious). But when they ripped out the connecting buildings to begin construction they discovered the soil underneath was toxic, and cleanup has to happen before they can build anything new.

Before you switch, check to make sure you have service inside your apartment. Even in areas with a generally good signal certain buildings can have trouble. Other than my current place (where the walls are more than a foot thick), the only issues I ever had with T-Mobile were at ski slopes in Vermont.

I'm probably the harshest critic of these store fronts. These stores - rainbow, hollywood chicken, sleep cheap, morlees and numerous discount stores need to close in order for JC to move forward.

K9, barcade, litm, sawadee, two boots, roman nose, the new speakeasy, bonchon, are the types of stores we need..

The smart thing to do would be for the city to secure a contract with a business owner who promises not to open these type of stores and then buy out these existing stores/restaurants.

I'm probably the target audience for your second list (love Barcade and Roman Nose, can't wait for Word to open), but I actually really like some of the "low-end" stores as well. CH Martin is the best of the bunch -- they have a decent housewares section that complements the hardware store across the street. Lots of basics like sheer panel curtains, very cheap. And they were the ONLY place in town that sold blinds that fit our odd little side window. Also, one of the dollar stores (can't remember which) has super-cheap cables for when I can't wait for Monoprice to ship.

I do wish they were open later, though. I only stop in when I'm working from home.
