Fingers crossed! I'm dying for another MAE, but I'd be perfectly fine with just a good local bar with decent food/prices.

More news to follow, not much information was available-I just happened to walk by (after seeing some activity earlier in the week) tonight and there was a family get together that I intruded upon.

That's interesting... Hopefully, it doesn't suck.

The new bubble tea place, The Big Straw, is not going to be at that space. It's going in at 276 1st St, which is right behind Left Bank Burger bar.

Love this walk on a nice night, super quiet too. I have a realtor friend in the neighborhood and he also says the inventory in the area is flying, definitely a good sign.

Agreed. It's only 20 minutes to the Grove Street PATH station from much of Lafayette. I walk it all the time!

This Saturday is the grand re-opening!

Pacific Flea is a weekly outdoor flea market specializing in antiques and vintage Americana. The grand re-opening will have multiple vendors, food, music, art, and live graffiti! We've partnered with local arts collective Green Villain, Grill Guyz food truck, and Yelp to make sure the event is extra awesome. The event is also BYO, so feel free to bring a six pack and hang out for a bit. Hope to see you all there!

Casual biker here, but trying to transition into making it my primary mode of transportation (gotta lose that winter weight somehow). I find biking downtown feels safer than the west side of the city, due to the smaller/ less busy streets and more frequent bike lanes. When heading over to the west side and dealing with large/super busy streets like Kennedy Blvd or even Communipaw during rush hour, do you guys bike on the sidewalk? Sorry to thread jack, but it seemed semi-relevent.

Def was not suggesting that they pour additional dollars into making a Muslim prayer room, I just don't see the big deal in letting ANY students use a vacant room for 10 min or so. If there was a large enough population, then I agree it'd be best to let a local Islamic org/ mosque rent out a room for them.

Ha, I have fond memories of this street. When my brother and I were kids my dad would drive us to Liberty State Park via Chapel. He referred to the bridge that led you to Caven Point (a green, rickety, old bridge that was replaced 10 years ago) as the "Goblin bridge" and would scare us every time we crossed it! Cool story bro, I know, just thought I'd share.

When I went to William Paterson the Muslim students were allowed to use mixed use rooms in the library for prayer. Many of the rooms were empty most of the time, so no one seemed to mind (they are supposed to pray 5 times a day at specific times, hence the urgent need to have a place to pray).

Message from my friend:

A lot of unexpected things have happened in the last few days, one of which was the reminder of the amazing group of neighbors, friends, and family surrounding us. On behalf of our mother, we would like to thank you for your donation. We were all so touched by your support and generosity.

Thank you again,

Agreed 100%, also it will help revitalize the surrounding neighborhoods.

My understanding is that Berry Lane Park will be large enough to be above and beyond a neighborhood park (WAY bigger than VVP, for example). That said, it's silly for the council members to question the spending, as it will be a benefit to all JC residents, not just those in the immediate neighborhood. I don't often go to that area, but if there was a great park with running path, bandshell, fitness stuff, etc. I would.

Re: UBER - car service in Jersey City
Home away from home
Home away from home

Uber in JC is definitely a gamechanger, especially in areas not along the path line. Just to clarify about tipping - UberX, black car, and SUV drivers do not get tipped. Uber takes 20% of their fares and the driver gets the other 80%, so it's a different dynamic than we're used to with yellow cabs. In larger cities like NYC where they've incorporated city cabs as an option, gratuity will be added only to your regular taxi rides since they don't have the same deal (the default gratuity is 20% but you can change that in your settings). Hope that clears things up. For the record I have no affiliation with Uber, just a big fan of the service.

Re: Haircut for Guys

Been getting my haircut every 2 weeks by the manager of Street Fame for almost 10 years, him and his crew are awesome. They are great for caesars, fades, brooks, and shape-ups (from my experience), but I'm sure they do more than that. Ask for Kenny if you go, great guy. Very clean shop and I rarely wait when I have an appointment. Located right across from the Philippine Bread House in the JSQ area.

Re: Cleaning Service
Home away from home
Home away from home

I'd def recommend it. It was a one man job, the guy was very professional and brought all his own cleaning supplies. I booked through homejoy.com, didn't even have to speak to a human. The UI on the site is great, you just answer a few questions and pick your time. The cleaner did a great job; I'd say the only gripe I had was that I had to book them about 3 weeks out, so if you're in a rush to get your place cleaned that might not work out for you. It was only $45 total with this deal link, good luck!

Hey, Joel. I'm curious to hear more about the homejoy.com experience. How was the cleaner? Was it easy/straightforward to book the cleaning? Were you super satisfied with the results? After so many years of resisting the idea of hiring a cleaning service, I am finding myself short of time and unable to clean my place as often as I used to, so I am considering hiring a cleaning person to handle some basics.

Yes, my dad originally opened the store in 1967. It's always been in the family. Now me and my brothers own it, and then we kinda expanded over the years. We have more locations: one in Staten Island, two in New Jersey, and we're still opening. In Jersey City, also in Sayerville.

Lol longtime lurker, I've just become more active on here this past year. I get so many laughs out of JCList altercations, I come for the info but stay for the entertainment lol. Trying to keep Nextdoor mostly informational, so far so good!

Looking forward to visiting this cupcake shop soon, sounds really good. Also, another +1 for Honey Bakery; they have phenomenal food. Does anyone remember if there's already a thread on great places to eat outside of downtown? If not I'll start that bad boy up, cuz there are some serious gems I'm sure a lot of DTers aren't aware of.

PS - Another reason why your labor of love (Nextdoor Lafayette) is such a breath of fresh air when compared to some of the nonsense in some of the JCList threads.

In addition, I know many people have completely written off this Mayor because he did not blindly follow their pet issue.

Of course consolidating the city government, a broad expansion of after school and recreational programs, putting police officers back on the beat, investing in parks, an already successful prisoner reentry and employment program, etc... are all insignificant accomplishments and don't matter. Only "my" issue matters!

But- do not despair miserable ones! There will certainly be unsuitable and under prepared candidates to waste money on in 3 years time.

Wow the space is looking great, they're doing a sick job. Met them at the Project JC event at City Hall also, they were really cool and took time explaining their concept. From what I remember their menu will be seafood-centric, with a farm to table ethos. I was unfortunately way too stuffed by the time I got to try their food, but a friend said it was tasty.
