Thanks, Mado. Yes, I\'ve been up there many times but my intention is to get a more local perspective by neighborhood from residents.

Not sure if anyone reads Vanishing New York but it's a blog of the gentrification of Manhattan's neighborhoods:
http://vanishingnewyork.blogspot.com/ I lived in the 70s in the East Village and many of the type of places you mention in this post meant also meant so much to people that lived there. Now, they're just a memory. I've been in JC for 21 years and have also seen so much change that I'd like to create a similar, non-commercial blog for Jersey City to help preserve some of those memories in dynamic way with pictures and commentary from people that live here. And also give people that are new to JC some historical perspective of where they live. Most people have no idea.

I'm trying to compile a list of unofficial JC landmarks by neighborhood. Every neighborhood has a unique something, restaurant, bar or view of something that people grew up with that defined the neighborhood.
I also realize that many of these may no longer be around but I wondering if a few of the old timers can point some of these cherished places like Mosquito Park or the Park Tavern or Roosevelt Stadium. Thanks.

While it's true that Folbots and folding kayaks are not cheap (Feathercrafts run about $6K, Folbots about $2K and have a lifetime guarantee on all parts.) The benefit is that you can store them in your apartment like I do.
I've taken my Folbot Yukon twice on the plane (two bags) to paddle and camp off of Vancouver and paddle off of LSP near the golf course.

Incidentally, Sawa (the W is pronounced like a V) is a mythical syren that sang to a young fisherman named Wars along the Wisła river in Poland. The two got together and you got Warszawa (Warsaw.)
The syren is on the coat of arms of Warsaw:

The Lighthorse usually has a decent selection. Pair that with a nice, crisp savignon and you're done.

I can't tell how happy I was to get pick up Polish cold cuts again. It's under new management and they now have English translations for the cold cuts. I suggested they do the same for the various varieties of kielbasa.
They also had fresh homemade pierogi, aspic "galareta" and fish in vegetables "ryba po grecku" which I ate in 2 seconds.

I have to say it's completely the museum's own doing. They didn't reach out to local artists because they felt many were producing lowbrow art. There was never an outreach program to 111 First St. artists so many felt alienated, rightfully so. Finally, when it was too late, they extended their reach to a community that became more fragmented and their snootiness did them in. Unfortunately the board let the building do the talking as they got swept up in the building boom in the late 90s.
Unless you are MOMA or the MET and have a huge endowment, museums lose money so the goal should have to each out to as many artists, organizations as possible to make the building a destination. It's unfortunate that the board has had such a shortsighted view. I guess they thought Fidelity was going to to pay for all the wine and cheese forever.

I think Fulop eventually has the best chance of making something happen but he'll be limited to Downtown JC. If he's serious, he'll need to make inroads into other neighborhoods.
I think Levin is too caustic and has made more enemies than Fulop so he has absolutely no chance. That said, Jersey City is still an old school town where if you can't make friends with cops and firemen, you'll go nowhere fast. Neither of them have scored any points in that department. The majority of the JC electorate seems to prefer status quo over innovation so as much as I want change, I feel that areas outside Downtown will go for the beer and hot dog candidate. It's hard to get enthusiastic when you know you're gonna lose.

Cops, fireman and school administrators (and their pensions) are bankcrupting municipalities all over this country. Jersey City is no exception. Take a look at how much these fat cats made in 2009.

That's great. I also think that there is a shortage of bakeries that can do birthday, wedding cakes. I always have to go to Carlo's bakery in Hoboken to get something decent. Best wishes.

Re: PRESERVATION OF POWERHOUSE TO BEGIN

The stabilization of the building is a big deal and it will last several years. The tower is cracked at the top and needs to be reinforced. About 80 tons of soil have been hauled out already.
Yes, the color scheme is over the top on purpose as it's adaptive reuse that's being done and not just preservation. I think the last thing anyone would want would be to turn the PH back to what it was, which was a coal-fired powerplant. The colors are a bit whimiscal but I think most people get that it reflects the potential of what could be as opposed to what it's been in the past. Another big issue is the Port Authority substation that powers the PATH train that needs to be moved from the west part of the building. Sounds easy but it's not. Lots of bureacracy and negotiations with adjacent landowners. FYI, the PA owns 51% of the building, the remainder is owned by the city. The PH is envisioned to be something like Chelsea Market, or Baltimore's PowerPlant Live where you have retail space cheap enough to rent by locals but where you also have one or two anchor tenants. The building will be just like any other retail center in that it needs to be self-sustaining, meaning it needs to make money to survive. But unlike the Newport Mall, the hope is that it will attract more quirky, creative and artisansal type of tenant and clientele. Of course, all of this remains to be fleshed out but it is an exciting project that I wish the knuckleheads at the city council could get behind. Yeah, it won't happen immediately but these kinds of projects are far and few between.

The suggestion that Bob's business went belly up is a total lie ? he sold it back earlier in the year. I've known him for a while and I have to say he's one of the nicest and most ethical guys I've met, which is unheard of in real estate.
I think he'll have his challenges coming from the private sector into a bureaucratic city government but he means well and I think that all this talk about him being a Healy lackey is a waste of time. Like in any municipality, there has to be a balance between entitlement for the people and fiscal responsibility so we'll see what happens with the urban zones, waterfront development and artist districts on his watch.
