I believe the Mayor who prevented the show from being held at Roosevelt Stadium was named Berry.

Berry was a pretty colorful character, but at least he wasn't under investigation or arrested.

Bernard J. Berry (July 3, 1913 ? January 6, 1963) served as the 33rd mayor of Jersey City, New Jersey from 1953 to 1957. He took office following the resignation of John V. Kenny who went to jail (surprise).

Berry achieved a level of notoriety for having banned both rock and roll music as well as an "obscene" film from Jersey City during his tenure. Berry banned the film The Moon Is Blue from being shown for being "indecent and obscene" and refused to allow Bill Haley and the Comets to play a concert at municipally-owned Roosevelt Stadium.

The latter act is believed to have inspired Haley to write the first protest song in rock and roll, "Teenager's Mother," which included the lyrics "Are you right? Did you forget too soon? How much you liked to do the Charleston?"

In 1956, after the 1954 closing of the US immigration station, Berry commanded a US Coast Guard cutter and led a contingent of New Jersey officials on an expedition to claim Ellis Island.

I guess Jersey City has a history of squashing live music in town.

So true.

A few nights ago, I was parking on McWilliams Place and observed a person looking around to see if anyone was watching while her dog did his business. I glared at her as she walked a several paces away , but she saw me. She abruptly turned around, reached into her pocket for a plastic bag, and cleaned up her dog's mess.

I just can't believe that she left her home with a poop bag but still intended to leave a mess behind near the tennis courts if no one was around.

Two firefighters were also taken to Jersey City Medical Center for minor injuries."

Scrapping Urban Enterprise Zones is seen as bad idea for Hudson County
#95
Home away from home
Home away from home

By Terrence T. McDonald/The Jersey Journal

A state report that calls for the elimination of the state's 36 Urban Enterprise Zones is getting a big thumbs-down from Hudson County officials, who say the 28-year-old program has helped revitalize local economies.

The consultant report, authorized by Gov. Chris Christie, was released today -- two days after Christie revealed that his 2012 budget proposal diverts $90 million in UEZ funds to plug a state-budget shortfall. The funds are generally dedicated for local improvement projects.

"If the money disappears from the UEZ, then that's going to be another burden for the taxpayer and the local governments," said Amada Avilla, UEZ coordinator for Union City, which uses UEZ funds to market local businesses and to hire a private company to clean city streets.

An effort to revitalize urban communities, the UEZ program dates to 1983. Certified businesses in the zones charge half the state's sales tax, and the money is returned to the communities to help finance local improvements and provide low-interest loans.

Hudson has the most UEZs of any New Jersey county, with zones in Bayonne, Guttenberg, parts of Jersey City, Kearny, North Bergen, Union City and West New York.

Last year, Christie stunned UEZ officials across the state by taking the revenue collected from UEZs and using it to plug a budget shortfall.

The report released today says that UEZs have little impact on local economies.
Jersey City lost $12 million last year when Christie diverted its UEZ revenue to the state budget, and it stands to lose that every year if the program is done away with, according to city spokeswoman Jennifer Morrill.

The city has used UEZ funds to pay for closed-circuit security cameras, police officers in business districts and sweet-sweeping projects, Morrill said.

"The loss of this important program would be devastating for Jersey City," said Jersey City Mayor Jerramiah Healy.

North Bergen Town Administrator Chris Pianese said the township lost $2 million in UEZ revenue last year, and he is fearful of what will happen if UEZ is eliminated. Businesses may no longer find North Bergen an attractive home, he said.

"You can run into a rising crime issue, you can run into cleanliness issues. What happens then? Well, leases run out and they're not renewed at the same rate, and things start to spiral," Pianese said.

St. Mary's High School in Downtown Jersey City to close at the end of the school year, officials say

Second school in the last few days to announce that it's closing...

By Vishal Persaud
The Jersey Journal

Another Catholic school in Jersey City will close at the end of the school year, The Jersey Journal has learned.

Three days after St. Patrick?s and Assumption/All Saints grammar school officials announced it would close at the end of the school year, St. Mary High School in Downtown Jersey City has done the same.

The pastor of the parish submitted paperwork to the Archdiocese of Newark to officially receive approval to close down the school, said Tom Lalicato, vice principal of St. Mary.

The school has been plagued by diminishing enrollment and Saturday?s extremely low freshmen registration numbers sealed the school?s fate. Sources said that fewer than 15 students registered.

"You can?t financially sustain a school with a hundred students," said Lalicato.

St. Mary?s will graduate 72 seniors this June, which would have left the school?s enrollment at 93 among the remaining classes. Ten years ago St. Mary had 381 students, Lalicato said.

School officials sent letters home to parents today telling the bad news.

The archdiocese will hold an open house in the coming weeks for St. Mary students to meet with representatives from the other six Catholic schools in the county, said Jim Goodness, spokesman for the archdiocese.

At $4,300 a year, St. Mary?s had one of the lowest tuitions among Catholic high schools in the state, Lalicato said, and catered to families in need of good, affordable education. The median annual tuition for a Catholic school is almost $8,100, according to the archdiocese.

"These families are not well-to-do families, and (school officials have) tried to struggle to maintain something that is affordable for the students and families," said Goodness. "They just can?t do that anymore."

The red wall on the corner of York and Barrow was tagged 2 weeks ago. The same idiots, Beset, FDS, Breel, and Emilio Estevez have vandalized postal vehicles, buildings under construction, mail boxes, C Town, businesses, and private property in all areas. They've tagged Newark Avenue from Grove to Brunswick and the Powerhouse area.

They are a friggin menace. I have one clue. Does anyone know the significance of the phrase "2010 Angry Apes?" This is a byline on a bumper sticker that also features the above tags. Is this a local group? Find who printed the bumper sticker and find the a$$holes. I've Googled it and nothing so far.

Many tags were done during the last snow storm and late night on Thursdays and Fridays.
Does anyone know the significance of the phrase "... Angry Apes?": just found out what it means at the urban dictionary. A bit too offensive to post.

Why is trash overflowing in various public garbage cans in and around Van Vorst Park?

In the Van Vorst Park dog area, the trash can was overflowing with canine feces last week. Finally, I saw two people, who I believe were city workers, cleaning it out. However, the way it was being cleaned out was very strange to me. One man stood holding a garbage bag open, while the other picked out each bag of feces individually and dropped it in the bag. Are there not more efficient ways to empty trash cans?

Agreed.

The maintenance man who cleaned out those garbage cans definitely drew the short straw that day. If an extra garbage bag or two were left in the run, perhaps some dog owners could help. Not a pleasant task to say the least.

I am not totally sure what the clean up crews have been doing lately, but the overflow started when the snow piled up in the park.

Mayor Jerramiah Healy and state Sen. Sandra B. Cunningham announced today that the Jersey City Incinerator Authority plans to rehire 30 Second Chance employees thanks to a $310,000 New Jersey Community Service Block Grant.

The Second Chance program hires individuals with non-violent criminal records.

In September, 42 Second-Chance employees in the city were laid off when state funding for the city's Urban Enterprise Zone was cut.

JCIA CEO Oren K. Dabney said those laid-off employees would have first preference to be rehired.

"I've seen peoples lives changed through the Second Chance program," Dabney said. "Some of our best full-time employees came from it.

Healy thanked Senator Cunningham for securing the state grant, saying in a press release that it would provide both jobs and valuable services to the city.

"When I saw the opportunity to secure funds for this program in Jersey City I did not hesitate," Cunningham said in a statement. "I am proud to say that Jersey City will once again have an active Second Chance program."

Crews are expected to work weekdays, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., performing various chores such as picking up litter and shoveling snow, Dabney said.

Second Chance was started in 2001 by Cunningham's late husband, Glenn D. Cunningham, when he was Jersey City mayor.

Unless one has a Handicap parking spot, there's no "reserved parking spots." I lost a pristine spot that I cleaned in front of my home and simply moved on to the next.

The biggest jerks are the ones who take two spots.

I have to respectfully disagree. If someone spent hours digging their car out (like you did as well), don't you think they deserve to save their spot for a couple of hours while they are running around? I spent 3 hours getting my car out, but I knew I'd be gone for the whole day so there was no chance of me saving the spot, but I would want to hold my spot if it were only a couple of hours.

I certainly do understand your frustration.

Although these are listed, here are some details.

The final chase scene of Toxic Avenger... quick and interesting view of Downtown on Columbus before the build up.

Wise Guys: Harsimus Cemetery, the small diner and auto body place that were near Mary Bensen Park and the firehouse on Newark Avenue.

Quiz Show: Inside the old Jersey City Medical Center... old teaching building I think... gave the scenes a cool art deco look.

I thought the same thing, but the officer on the scene thought otherwise.

That structure on third and Erie undergoing renovation is a magnet for cars. Just a few years ago, a car went through the fence and hit the side of that home.

I felt bad for the old woman who lost control of her car today. According to the officer on the scene, she was traveling less than 20 miles an hour and hit the brakes too hard. Just a "not so good driver" who should have stayed home. She was shaken up, but okay.

Roads are slick today.

Enjoyed it immensely.

For an appetizer, we had the bacon wrapped stuffed dates. I don't much like dates, but the almonds, blue cheese, sweet dates and bacon tasted great.

Likewise, we had a wedge of Gorgonzola Dolce which went extremely well with our red wine. The Gorgonzola was served at the perfect temperature and was of excellent quality.

I had the short ribs which went extremely well with the goat cheese mashed potatoes. She had ricotta gnocchi which was very good.

The sweet potato crem brulee was excellent with my expresso cortado.

Cool vibe and decor, great food, attentive waiter, and very good prices definitely make this place worth the visit. I will be back soon and can't wait until they open for lunch.

I understand that the corkage has been been eliminated.

Did it look like this peregrine? This one who was born here does have a yellow beak but no "crest". If it was, perhaps it was picking up an easy meal at an already dead carcass. I just don't think they're big enough to take down a cat, a big female is only 3lb according to wiki.

I can say with reasonable certainty that it was the peregrine. I can be mistaken using the term, "crest" ... its head was dark brown.

I was on 4th between Erie and Jersey today and a falcon swooped down and took a pigeon that was in mid flight.

Pretty violent and disturbing but impressive at the same time.

He dined atop the building next to the old Baptist church on the corner. I would find it strange that the same bird would also take another animal, so I guess a pair is fattening up for the winter.

I hope it wasn't someone's cat that had been taken behind 4th.

However, he receives a 90 - 120 dollar check a month from the utilities that he sells back. I wonder how this works in a four hundred unit complex?
