we just dropped off four(!) old printers for recycling at Best Buy, and got four coupons for 15% off a new printer.

I believe they do the same for all electronics.

meanwhile, if anyone would like one of our three unused coupons, PM me.

Move 14C tolls to the CC drive exit.
Add a new toll on the turnpike east of CC Drive (say, 14D)
Anyone who enters HT within x minutes of exiting 14A, B, or C gets charged (significantly) more than the person who goes from 14D to HT?

If so, I like it.
Only thing I don't like is TPK would get that $ rather than JC.

No moving of tolls, just new "express lane" type readers past the Columbus exit that catch the tags as they pass so they know when the cars get to the HT who used the 12th st ramp and not LSP or Columbus.

drivers can simply remove their EZ pass after going through the 14C toll, and replace it before going through the Holland.

This is a troll post. It's like 15 minutes to Harrison. 15 minutes back to Journal Square, and it's not an easy transfer -- you might even have to exit the system to get back in.

yeah I read that and thought the "3" was surely a typo, as it's closer to 30 minutes roundtrip.

City Diner, really? The food is bland (if not gross) and some of the staff are an olive short of a pizza.

Then again, not a fan of several of the JC establishments listed here. Orale was overpriced, and I cannot abide places that make it so loud you cannot hear who you are dining with (Porta, South House - though I must say I enjoyed the food at SH)

Personally, I'm a fan of Amelia's, White Star, Satis, Light Horse Tavern. Mantra for Indian, Taste of North China for Chinese.

Yet to find a Mexican joint that I like. Three Coffee Beans has come closest (delivery), but that's hit and miss.

Agreed on City Diner. (Why can't Jersey City have an actual diner-diner?) South House is actually pretty good on like a Tuesday. You can hear your companions, the staff is friendly, and their drinks are surprisingly well-crafted. Taqueria will always be our go-to Mexican. The little outpost on Grove/Bay is always crowded, with good reason. But if you can belly up to the 5-seat bar, you'll be glad you did. And we've had a couple of great breakfasts at that Mexican place on the corner of Barrow and Bright.

I used to do that on hot summer late evenings from 9th Street - why wait for the same train to come back down 15 minutes later packed full of people? Ride in comfort.

Yeah this is my late-night go-to maneuver, as well.

Can anyone explain the logic behind the elevator at Grove Street? I'm actually surprised this hasn't come up before.

To call the elevator, one must push - AND THEN HOLD - the button, until the elevator arrives.

Once on the damn thing, the passenger must push and hold the button until the elevator reaches its destination. Let go, and you're stuck between floors. And it's not just pushing the button, you really have to lean into it, hard.

It is an awkward maneuver for the able-bodied. I cannot imagine how an elderly person with a walker or a wheelchair-bound passenger could comfortably accomplish this.

I used the elevator because I had my hands full of heavy luggage. Oh hey, there's a button I need to press and hold my full body weight into. Handy.

In typical Port Authority manner, they've taken something simple, and made it complicated.

And how is this even ADA-compliant?

With the housing crunch DTJC is facing, what can be done to prevent more apartment buildings from turning into ad-hoc hotels?

DeeDee's Lofts at Grove

It's the capitalist society we live in and the free market. Deal with it. Obviously the owner thought it was more lucrative to rent the units out as an AirBnB......
As long as they pay all the necessary taxes and follows the zoning rules, I see no problems with this.

it's even more lucrative to run a bar. maybe I can turn my place into a speakeasy?

this developer got a permit - and tax rate - for an apartment building, and he opened a hotel. his neighbors expected new neighbors, and instead got an endless parade of transients.

JC needs to crack down on this like NYC has, and hold Airbnb to its original intent: facilitating rental of one's spare room or temporarily vacant home.

true. that was me jumping to conclusions. regardless of the source of their frustration, for a major utility company to take it out (or at least threaten to) on customers who've always been in good standing is, to me, just outrageous.

PSE&G: is this even legal?

I received a letter from PSE&G stating that there is a problem in our building that requires them to shut off one of their meters, and since all of their attempts to gain access have failed, they plan to cut power and gas to the entire building.

I imagine this is due to my neighbor not paying her bill, and then not answering the door. she's a bit....intense, so I want no part of this, and resent PSE&G putting the onus on my household to give them access to her meter.

I'm letting the management company handle this. but how is it legal for a utility company to threaten to turn off the power and gas of customers who pay their bills on time??

if you don't receive enough packages to warrant the expense, they'll accept them for about $3-$5, depending on size.

PATH to 33rd, walk to Penn Station, LIRR to Jamaica, JFK AirTrain. :(

Hands down the best solution available. Seriously, don't even bother looking for alternatives. It is 75-90 minutes from DTJC to JFK. I have done it multiple times, without issues. During weekends it is cheaper, as you can take advantage of the LIRR CityTicket option, which means you pay ~4.00 for the LIRR, plus PATH, plus AirTrain. About $12 in total. I have done it before in 75 minutes, but it depends on connections and a bit of luck. Worst case scenario, barring any crazy, unexpected problems, it will take you 90 minutes.

I've made better time doing PATH > WTC > A train > AirTran.

but that's the route the original poster is trying to avoid.

Re: Traffic Lights in JC Are All Out of Sync
Home away from home

there's a SUPER dangerous situation going on at the corner near Five Guys (Columbus and Warren Streets).

when you're crossing Columbus on the east side of the intersection, walking south, away from Five Guys, the walk signal coincides with the left turn signal, putting pedestrians right into the path of southbound cars turning left onto Columbus from Warren.

the signal, with its green left-turn arrow and white walking man, is literally telling people to cross while it's telling drivers to drive through that same crosswalk.

it's a tragedy waiting to happen.

I've reported it on see click fix, with no results. also posted photos on assorted facebook community groups. nada.

who do I reach out to?
