Re: 'Very unusual' Jersey City house for sale

I almost went to see this place, but the terms to just view the property were ridiculous. I think it's all a bit strange.

Take a look at the last picture in the bedroom - note the foot of the bed in the bowl - the leaking must be insane.

Re: Fig Trees

Roughly 10 degrees is the tipping point for figs but a lot has to do with where they are planted. I will echo what others have said - it's too early to tell, but I think its worth noting that the microclimate in the area lends to plants safely weathering the winter.

If the fig is planted in the ground and in a protected yard (inside a block) there is a good chance it survived. I have a number of anuals that perpetually survive - and every spring I am still surprised. Especially over the last two winters.

If the fig was planted at the front of a building I would say its more a gamble... but there is a fig that grows at the intersection of 8th & Erie (NW corner) that has been around for a few seasons and fruits every year.

More info than you needed, but good luck!

I wish something cool would open there. Could be a great place for live music or just a big destination/theme type of bar.

I've walked by there two Fridays in a row during peak happy hour time and the place is barely half full.

The suggestion that gay is the result of an environmental stimulus, like abuse, is insulting. You should sit these conversations out... and I am sure the Catholic network is the place to go for unbiased projection and opinion.

The question that isnt answered is, 'Why is he unhappy being a gay man?' I'd gamble it comes from people like yourself that think gays are better of being chaste than in loving relationships.

How much longer before you leave JC?

Yvonne wrote:
I usually watch the Catholic network EWTN, and a program came on about same sex attraction. It was 5 men and 2 woman. All seven decided to lead a chaste life, although many mentioned they are still attracted to the same sex. The men said an older male had sex with them at 13 or 14 years of age and the women said they were afraid of the abuse they saw in domestic violence with men and started dating women. If there was a link to the show I would post it.
The bottom line is, Catholics do not pray away gayness.
Also, I picked up I believe People's Magazine awhile back waiting in a doctor's office many years ago. It quoted the former partner of Anthony Perkins, apparently, Anthony was getting some flack from the gay community for going for treatment for his "gayness." His former partner told the community to leave Anthony alone because he was unhappy as a gay male. Anthony Perkins was still alive when this article came out. Do I think children should be subjected to this? No, but adults, like Anthony Perkins should have that choice. I understand the Archdiocese of Newark runs that program on living a chaste lifestyle called Courage.

Re: High-rise development at Metro Plaza (Shoprite, BJs, Pepboys)

The ShopRite, BY FAR, has the best selection... including higher end brands. Last holiday season I did a huge dinner that included produce, meats, and seasoning that I figured I would have to find in the city - all of it came form ShopRite (and it was all excellent quality).

The only thing that I could not find was cipollini onions.

Also what is with all the Shoprite hate? They have a decent variety of produce that can satisfy multiple flavor palettes. The produce they have is for the most part fresh and ripe. Unlike the local Pathmarks, in Jersey City, which I have seen many pieces of produce molding and starting to rot remain on the shelves. The fish counter, appy, and butcher department have a wide array of products that are well butchered. Unlike the A&P the shoprite is still priced for a middle to upper middle class family.

The A&P and Pathmark are both way overpriced for the quality of the goods they sell.

I have seen more cops writing tickets... and felt it likely had to do with the elimination of the parking authority... seems like others agree.

The tickets I now see are for blatant infractions; parking in front of fire hydrants, parking too close to intersections, etc. All things that deserve tickets.

Re: Front yard parking

I dont buy this at all

The owner of the home/structure is responsible for maintaining the side walk in front of their home. Keeping it free of debris and snow. Not allowing owners to use the space as they see fit seems a bit unfair - also consider that they likely pay more taxes than the majority.

Trouble finding a parking space in JC? Well - maybe you should be using the PATH, ferries, light rail, and buses to access JC. There are also plenty of garages where you keep your car and use said public transit to access what you need.

Street parking is NOT a public good. When we put up pay meters it is a public good. I am happy people have the privilege of owning a car, but NO ones owes anyone a space to park it in.

Also keep in mind that street parking also carries danger - it limits visibility around turns, allows for children, adults, and animal to go unseen, and contributes to street congestion.

Sorry - I say tough stuff...

It's simple - people shouldnt be using Erie as a pass through street for their commute. I am all for making it painful to drive through Hamilton Park and any other neighborhood in JC. Even with the stop signs... I am regularly rushed by cars at the stops and would gamble I'm not the only one.

Maybe the execution blew, but it is at the very least the most proactive thing the city has done to manage traffic and slow it down. I honestly figured nothing would happen until a person bounced off the hood of someones car and died.

When are these going up on Manilla??

Quote:

cuse04 wrote:
not only is it excessive (considering all the new stop signs in the area), but it also seems to be contributing to the cluster-f that already is rush hour traffic on erie getting to the tunnel. you have to go so slowly over it, that traffic backs up to 6th street and no one can get through the intersection before the light changes.

Funny how some people act - I usually take it as an indication of not having control over anything else in their lives; one of the many reasons I keep local politics an arms length away

Then she flat out denied she ever said that when I called that out to the audience. Um, dtjc got humps in the hisoric district area and there is nothing in historic district guidelines against speed humps. (This is also the same woman who is trying to push through this designation with a small group of supporters for a wide swath of Ward B without involving the appropriate council people in the process or adequately announcing the handlful of public meetings being held on it...also not fully notifying all homeonwers in the proposed district that this is underway and what the process is...smh). Such a bunch of crap.

And while I can appreciate that the Councilmen were trying to do damage control on the horrible rollout, I'm horrified in how they came to a decision to remove it. On the fly, right there at the meeting, they told the Traffic guys to remove it this Friday. I am left to wonder if Council people have that authority to do that in that manner. Isn't there a process to reverse a public works project since lots of money and safety issues are at stake? I've alerted the Mayor's office that Council are taking matters into their own hands with little to no analysis. We shall see.

I will start by saying I am pro speed humps - would love to see a few down the entire stretch of Manilla.

The new one they put in (and I would guess there is a second planned by the school) is HUGE... I questioned if my car might bottom out on the apex as it passed between the wheels. It made me bring the car to a near stop to go over it... fine by me.

I would love to know what process led to their creation. Was it the school? the HP community association?

Old Timer status is not just living in JC for any length of time. You have certain criteria which helps you qualify for Old Timer Status.
Living in an old house with a leaky roof and sewers backing up every time it rains +2.
Having a dive bar on your block +2.
Having the patrons of the dive bar trying to break into your house or car at 3 AM +5.
Paying RE taxes on a 1988 assessment on your house while everyone else is paying taxes on a current assessment +5.
Whining about how everyone, but not you, should pay more in taxes to fix the sewers on your block and cover the budget gap +8.

There are more but I haven't thought of them yet.

Re: Jersey City Parking Authority Set to Be Dissolved

It was a trolling article... the emphasis on no-bid contract, another $15k, politically aligned law firm - how much more crap can they drop into an article that's barely 500 words?

And... I would gamble that anything under a given threshold in JC is allowed to be no-bid.

If it were for a full-blown trial on some injury claim of some sort against the city, maybe. To conduct a study on why we should abolish the parking authority, not so much. I'm certain a law firm in Jersey City could have handled this, and for less money. You know, I'm sure the lawyers spent a lot of time stuck in traffic driving between Parsippany and Jersey City for meetings at the city hall, and every minute of that time was billable too (the two places are not far apart, but sometimes there is serious gridlock, having commuted on that route for many years).

I also think a more run-of-the-mill management consulting firm in the area could have done this work as well for less money, because from the sounds of it, much of the study wasn't actual legal work anyway. The law firm could have been consulted on some issues (i.e. legalities associated with issuing tickets) but it seems like the city got hosed on this one, as it all too often happens.

Time to check the state election commission reports and see how much this law firm donated to mayoral and council member campaigns.
It's pretty obvious you've never had to hire a lawyer for something.

Also, this wasn't just a "study" that the lawyers were conducting. they obviously had to file paperwork and probably do a bunch of hearings with the NJ Civil Service Commission. Draw up documents dealing with termination of board members, integration of existing employees into other agencies, legal stuff to deal with the dissolution of the corporation, where assets go, all that stuff. I can't guess at the specifics, but there's a lot more to it than "a study" and $35k is really cheap for lawyers to do that kind of work, especially considering the amount of savings involved.

I have hired a lawyer, whenever I bought or sold my personal residence. Also when I was getting a deck built on my place needed to navigate the local zoning board. I used a Jersey City lawyer in all but one case. In any case, I wasn't spending taxpayers' money.

Maybe Weiner Lezniak was the best firm for the job, I don't know. The article also didn't report all of the things you mentioned about what the law firm had to do, it just sounded like they prepared a study that a consulting firm could do. But if what you say is true, I stand corrected. It just annoys me that both the Healy and now Fulop administrations, couldn't be bothered to use a law firm in Jersey City, but, as the article states, the "politically connected" Weiner Lesniak. Florio Kenney, in Hoboken, gets a lot of the city's legal work. Judging by the name of the firm, they must be "politically connected" as well. Then I remember the city used some firm in Secaucus, Chasen Leyner I think, to defend against a lawsuit filed by the former Atomic Wings owner over all the delays in opening.

There may have been no law firm in the city that could handle the work assocaited with the parking authority, but since it was a "no bid" contract, it also sounds like the city made no effort to find out. If they're going to spend our tax dollars, they could at least be making an effort to spend them at a local business. I know local businesses can't provide all of the city's needed services, or always do the best job, but it seems like the city could be making more of an effort to spend its tax revenues back in its own community.
