He spends his life trying to convince people that the second "b" isn't silent.

I was at 33rd. They were announcing a shut down of the Hoboken/33 and JSq/33 lines due to a police action at 33rd and directing NJ-bound passengers to go to WTC. No police action was visible. Then they pulled the gates down in front of the turnstiles. Less than five minutes later they pulled the gates back up and let people onto the platform. The first trains arriving were completely empty. Lucky I hung around for the five minutes.

A Jersey City man was arrested Tuesday and charged with extortion and making terroristic threats to a former acquaintance.

What exactly IS a former acquaintance? Is this someone you met during a prior incarnation but are unfamiliar with in this one? Or is it someone you knew before you were beaten badly in an alley in Marrakesh and awoke with no wallet, no memory of your identity and no way of finding your way back to your previous life?

Perhaps there's some civil process available whereby I can unburden myself of an inconvenient acquaintanceship. Is it a unilateral thing, or must both parties agree? After the acquaintanceship has been dissolved, can I claim no knowledge of the person in court without exposing myself to perjury? Can I pass a polygraph? If I meet this person in the future, will I be in danger of becoming reacquainted without even realizing it? Have I asked these questions before?

According to the published PATH schedules:
Pavonia to Christopher during weekdays is 9 minutes.
Pavonia to Christopher via Hoboken on weekends is 14 minutes.

What they don't mention, of course, is that sitting in a stationary train at Hoboken feels like an eternity.

Someone today pointed out to me that my claim about this particular photo is not as obvious as I thought. I took this photo and I posted it because I saw this car being towed on one wheel. Now looking at it more objectively I can see that it could look like two wheels are on the ground.

I maintain that I witnessed this car being towed on one wheel before I put the camera in front of my face and if this car was damaged as a result I think the owner would be glad to see this photo.

It appears to me that the right rear tire may have still been off the ground when you snapped the picture. The right rear tire could be perceived as being on the ground because the shadow it casts seems to touch the tire itself. But that shadow is probably cast by the inner edge of the tire, runs under the lifted tire and therefore would appear to touch the outer edge even if the tire were off the ground. I also think you can see a difference between the right and left rear tire shapes, with the left being flatter on the ground because it is bearing weight. Nevertheless, on a view of the tires alone I would not be convinced either way.

What appears clearest to me though is that the left side of the bumper is closer to the ground than the right side, as is the left exhaust pipe versus the right.

Another pronunciation giveaway is Pavonia (puh VOH nya) often mispronounced by newcomers like the shrub or the Ohio city (puh VOH nee uh). When I was a newcomer, my uncle schooled me on this one so I wouldn't embarrass myself in public.

He doesn't look like an American to me. Perhaps a campaign like this by the PATH would yield some results. (They should leave out all those Japanese curse words though). I remember they put signs at WTC escalators years ago telling people to ride on the right. That was successful in changing behavior. Many people are not intentionally inconsiderate. They are just too self-involved to know better.
