Re: parking ticket: motor vehicle nuisance? huh?

i live downtown where the parking is getting harder every day. i moved my car around the corner last friday afternoon to get it out of the way of the street sweeper, and an hour later when i went to move it back i found a weird parking ticket--not the orange-bordered printed kind that the parking authority carts give out, but a handwritten one put there by a cop. the citation was 'motor vehicle nuisance' ordinance 242-7, and there's no way to pay it online or by mail--i have to show up in court. part of my car was in the red zone (the 25' from the intersection where the curb is painted), but there wasn't any other open spot. my car's not falling apart; it doesn't have an alarm. so what kind of nuisance is it? and what alternative do we have, other than parking way far away from the blocks that are getting swept? every day, cars park overnight in all eight of the red zones at this intersection--even in the one next to a fire hydrant. are they all nuisances, too? periodically i get the standard $42 parking ticket (like everyone) and pay it without complaining; i figure it's one of the recurring costs of living here, like a tax, and the tickets are pretty random and sporadic. but what's this nuisance crap?

What alternatives do you have? Not park in a red zone. Not really that hard.

Good chance that if 50 people in the middle of Grand St. that at least 10 will be run over by some idiot speeding down Grand and not paying attention.

I'd suggest as a start that every intersection on Grand be made into a 4 way stop. A flashing red light at every intersection. If it's 4 lanes at certain intersections (like Jersey), then some lanes should be made into turn only lanes, so that every intersection only ever has one lane going straight. That way, people will be forced stop at every intersection and wouldn't be able to get up to excessively dangerous speeds at any stretch. It would be annoying as hell to drive down, but it could be helpful, and one of the less costly solutions.

As someone who drives Grand Street every day, this does not sound like a solution. On the contrary, it sounds like it would cause way more car accidents. Whether you like it or not, Grand Street is a main road that takes people from the waterfront to the NJ Turnpike. Do you want it to be so congested that people won't be able to get out of our city? I would think there would be even more aggressive driving.

Not sure what the best solution is...someone mentioned speed bumps and I guess I can see something like the rumble strips they put on the turnpike pay stations at key intersections. But still, as dangerous as Grand Street is, none of the things that people have been pointing out caused this lowlife to take drugs and drive under the influence. That and that alone is the reason two innocent hard working men were killed.

It was on Pacific Street right near Lafayette Village. We drove right past it and you could smell the gas.

Certainly no guarantees.

We have a culture problem and poor enforcement of laws only reinforces this issue. Said differently, the driver was almost certainly a long-time repeat offender and believed he could get away with reckless--after all he probably thought it was fun. If he had been caught multiple times in the past due to greater enforcement, he would most likely have driven more reasonably to avoid getting caught again, or have lost his license, or have been off the streets and in jail.

More broadly, greater enforcement would improve the overall safety of the city and while it might not have avoided this one horrible event, the overall safety of the city would improve.

The driver DID have a suspended license.

Nothing could have prevented this tragedy. No amount of cameras or speed bumps would have stopped this guy from taking drugs and excessively speeding in the streets of JC. If it wouldn't have happened on Grand Street, it would have been on Montgomery or Columbus or any number of streets in downtown.

This whole thing is horrible and I hope that guy never sees the light of day. It is heartbreaking and has been heavy on my mind the last few days. I think it's easy for everyone to point their fingers at our inept government and say that this could have been prevented because of x, y or z. Could Grand Street be laid out better? Sure it could, but that wouldn't have stopped a guy with a suspended license to take drugs and speed down the road and kill two innocent men.

Before you start frothing at the mouth, read my god damned post. I said that 25 mph is "pretty low". I never EVER said anything about it being "too low", nor did I say anything about raising the speed limit. Personally, I think 25 mph is perfectly acceptable on Grand Street. The people who are driving recklessly in JC are not the ones who obey the speed limit or traffic signals.

Sorry, it read differently. I'm glad we agree.

Thanks, no problem. Obviously this tragedy is making everyone very upset and I think everyone is in agreement that we all need to be careful when driving and walking in JC.

The problem is that no one obeys the speed limit, some don't stop at the red lights, and people like Herman Chandler probably wouldn't even pull over for a cop (if there were any doing traffic enforcement). The lane shifting argument doesn't hold any water...if people drove the speed limit, it would be easy and safe to negotiate a calm lane change when necessary. At double the posted limit, people panic when they discover that they're in a left-turn only lane and do stupid and dangerous shit to compensate. It's like the wild farking west.

Andy, ITA and this is what I was trying to say in my post. The problem here isn't the speed limit or lack of speed bumps or even the lane shifts. Again, if you are driving 25 mph, the lane shifts won't cause any accidents, and there are markings in the lanes which tell you what to do when the lanes move over to the left.

The issue is that no one obeys the traffic rules that are in place in JC. That includes drivers and pedestrians. I actually had to slam on my brake today because a grandpa stepped into the street holding the hand of a 2 year old when my light was green and he had a "Don't Walk" signal. Had he did this when there was a driver who was not paying attention or driving 70 mph, he probably would have gotten hit by a car.

And I have to hazard to guess that if there WAS a cop on Grand Street, he wouldn't been able to stop Herman Chandler and who knows, that guy might have sped away from the police car at a higher speed and caused even more damage. The guy was high and driving. No amount of speed bumps or lower speed limits or even traffic cameras would have prevented a man who is high on drugs with impaired judgment from hurting and killing innocent bystanders.

I don't see how it's feasible to put speed bumps on Grand Street. It's a main road that people take to drive to and from the NJ Turnpike. Also, the speed limit is 25, which is pretty low imo.

I'm sure they can make you pay after a year. The alternative is that it goes through collections and you will have nasty people calling you all of the time and it goes on your credit rating.

If I were you, call the doctor's office and see if they can knock down the pricing. Also call your insurance company to make sure that you actually do owe the balance.

I don't really think that he was talking about the food court at the mall, which is basically fast food. He obviously was talking about the sit down places like Azucar and Raaz.

Just because it's "Newport" doesn't mean we should expect the food to be mall food. And actually, I like the food court at the mall. The indian place is pretty good and I kind of miss that Mongolian BBQ place.

We actually were at Bertucci's last night. There are a few chain restaurants that are OK imo like Bertucci's, Macaroni Grill, PF Chang, Outback Steakhouse. I wouldn't call any of those places "authentic" but the food can be pretty tasty for what it is and sometimes you just want to go to a place that gives you crayons and has a consistent menu that you know your whole family can find something they'll like to eat.

Anyway, the service at Bertucci's was slooooow and I was drinking a glass of iced tea when halfway through my glass I smelled something awful. At first I thought "Maybe someone farted" and after a few more sips of my drink, I realized the only time I smelled something was when I was drinking. The glass smelled like farts!!! I was given a new glass but I had a fleeting moment where I thought I was going to die of e. coli.

Cars are only one part of the factor. So maybe I assumed that most people in DTJC have a car. It might be half or a little more than half or a little less than half. Either way, a TJs and WF would probably want to support the JC/Hoboken and/or Bayonne community, which would necessitate a parking lot. They probably look at HHI as well and JC's wealth probably doesn't outweigh the poverty.

Judging from where TJs have stores, they like to target MC/UMC communities. Look at the list of stores on their website....none of the towns are what you would really call "mixed income" imo. They are in major citiies and their surrounding wealthy suburban communities.

Whoever said Bayonne is probably right. Bayonne has a bunch of new shopping centers and maybe one of those grocery stores will open up in that community someday.

Tons do not. Like myself. Like 6 of the 8 tenants in my building. You do not speak for everyone. I frequent shoprite because it's 3 blocks away, but would go out of my way to do occasional shopping at TJs due to price point and a different array of foods available.

Quote:

There are often livery cabs outside of shoprite, and last I noticed, they had a list of local cab companies you could call posted at the exit.

Sorry, you can argue with me all you want but no TJs or WF will open in NJ unless it has dedicated parking. Who said I spoke for everyone? I said MOST DTJC residents have a car, not all. I honestly don't know anyone who doesn't have a car, but whatever. Also who is TJs and WF targeting? Middle class to UMC shoppers and aspirational shoppers. Also, shoppers who buy groceries for a whole family (more money that they need to spend to feed their family) The majority of these people have cars and wouldn't shop at a grocery store for MAJOR grocery shopping unless there is parking.

A large grocery chain like TJS or WF want their customers to go regularly and drop a bunch of money every week. Occasional shopping is not desirable for these stores. Think about the rent they'll have to pay for a large store in this city. This is the same reason why retail chain stores like The Gap won't open up in Hoboken.

I know that I wouldn't frequent a grocery store for major food shopping here unless it had parking. JC also does not have the public transportation that manhattan and Brooklyn have. We also dont have cabs we can hail outside a grocery store. You cannot compare our city with NYC, which is why it is doubtful those stores would open up in JC anytime soon.

Yes, bc it is a weapon like item that isn't allowed on school property. I don't make the rules but I am aware that bringing stuff like this onto school grounds will probably get your child in trouble. Any parent that would let their kid bring something like that to school is an idiot. It is disruptive at best and with the way things are right now, I'd expect someone in the school admin to react to it.

"Weapon like" and a weapon are two totally different things. A nurf gun can simply be taken away and parent teacher conference can be set up to discuss it. I am guessing you think the 9 year old suspended for "sexual harassment" for calling a teacher cute in North Carolina was the right thing for the school to do also? How about the 10 year old kid suspended for 10 days for a PAPER gun in Michigan? Schools are getting out of hand with all of these rules. I have seen kids suspended for bringing a dull pizza cutter to a pizza party, butter knife to cut cake, and a roll of quarters they were going to cash in after school because a teacher said they could be used like brass knuckles. Just because someone made a rule doesn't mean it shouldn't be questioned and blindly followed.

No, actually I don't. But those are the rules and your kid will be suspended for bringing in a "weapon like" toy into school Do I think it's sort of dumb? Sure I do, I assume that the rules are in place so that if you do bring in a pellet gun that looks like a real gun, you wouldn't be able to wiggle out of it by saying "it's only a toy".

Well, first of all, let's not lie. It is not "zero tolerance for weapons". It is "zero tolerance" period - for weapons, for anything that resembles weapons, for anything that hints at anything that may or may not be weapons.

Now, onto your question. Let's review, shall we? Three boys come to school with toys. They do not pose any threat to anyone. Now, how do you think - what is in best interest of those harmless students - to be suspended or to not be suspended?

Frankly, I am puzzled - you look at this story, - and you ask THAT question? Do you really not see it? What possible interest of any child was protected by suspending those boys?

I think it would depend on whether or not the "toys" looked like real guns or were obviously toys, like a squirt pistol. If they looked like real guns, they should be arrested, in my opinion. It's like bringing a realistic looking gun into a public place and brandishing it around and threatening to shoot people. You'd be arrested for that, even though the gun actually was a toy. If they looked like a nerf gun, then a suspension and disciplinary action from the school would be appropriate.

As someone pointed out earlier, we really don't know what the "gun" looked like.

Interestingly enough, I read this article on Gawker. It doesn't look exactly the same, since the pellet gun looked just like a real gun.

I think that the kids in JC shouldn't have been arrested, but they should have been suspended for sure.

My point was, I'm not a prude and I'm aware of porn on the internet. And yes, I've read articles on Gawker and Jezebel etc about the porn industry as well. While an uncomfortable relationship with the human body is common for Americans, the position that our children will be negatively affected if they see a half a boob is still a load of crap. What has decades of that attitude gotten us? At best, a desperate fascination with cheap titillation.

The restaurant employs a pathetically cheap concept so we can reject it for simply being cheap, not for its potential to appall Quakers who will never step foot inside.

My kids see me naked all of the time. My issue isn't nudity, which is normal, my issue is the way the women are dressed. They look like they are out of a Brazzers porno. I'm not going to want to explain why the women serving them are dressed like that, nor do I want them to think it's OK for them to dress like that when they get older. I'll just preemptively not take them. Believe me, I am not a freaking prude. But I certainly don't need to my girls think it's OK to sexualize themselves to make money.
