Looks similar to the Marvlis system currently being used by JCMC EMS to track hotspots and cut response times by collecting call history to predict high call volume areas at any moment throughout the day. A successful system that will be tossed if CarePoint/McCabe is given the contract. If this is such great technology for JCPD, why not for EMS?

The lack of responsibility by shown by Hyman should be demonstrative of their lack of taking ownership of property they claim is theirs. Since they have taken ownership of the embankment they have shown zero commitment to the care of the property. Their continued neglect should be considered abandonment.

What is going on with this? I was under the impression that Jersey City is obligated to the State to do a reval at some point. Seems to me we actually missed an opportunity to do the reval last year when property values were still in a bit of a slump. Since last year property values have bumped and only look to be going up.

I respect Brigid's efforts to educate herself and help educate the community on the subject. I have been pulled into the vortex of thinking that abatements are bad for the City and simply handouts to wealthy developers. But truthfully am not educated enough on the subject to come so such a conclusion. So let the learning begin.

The Office of Inspector General (OIG) is looking into the legality of the agreement. One point of concern is that the reimbursement proposed by Jersey City in the RFP is in violation of Anti-Kickback laws. There may be other concerns. It could take many months to get a ruling from the OIG. Till then the awarding of the contract to CarePoint is on hold. Quote:

Mickey McCabe is continually being used as the face of this deal, but he is not. He is the minority holder at 30% and the real brass behind the deal is CarePoint. We know that they have turned Bayonne into the most expensive hospital in the country and in a move to expand their business model throughout the area they have purchased Christ and Hoboken Hospitals. Events that should cause concern for those that care about quality affordable health services.

I think this denial of application for Managed Care speaks volumes as to who CarePoint is. The NJ Office of the Attorney General didn't just deny CarePoint, they eviscerated them.

July 29, 2013

DMAHS remains Concerned about CerePo?nt?s continuing pattern of misrepresentation to State agencies about its readiness, its competencies, its corporate ownership and its failure to accept responsibility for prior misrepresentations. Given the importance of this contract to thousands of New Jersey's poorest and most vulnerable citizens and the impact on their health care and decisions about their health care, DMAHS cannot currently grant CarePoint a MCO contract.

and it gets better?

As part of its due diligence, MFD investigators performed background checks on all named individuals and corporate entities, disclosed in the application. On the ?Disclosure Statement of Ownership and Control Interest," Sequoia Healthcare Services, LLC (?Sequoia?) is acknowledged as the 100% controlling interest. However, Sequoia is not identified or mentioned in the entire MCO application. Given CarePoint?s corporate structure, including ownership by an entity with only addresses end a name, as well as its improper and omitted identification concerning its chief medical officer, and finally its lack of permanent experienced corporate staff with a solid financial and professional track record, DMAHS cannot reasonably find adequate indicia of the requisite stability for such a high risk contract. Based on MFD?S factual findings, DMAHS believes that CarePoint made misrepresentations about its corporate ownership structure and responsible persons. Sequoia appears to be only an address, or a post office box for a phantom corporate entity. Perhaps a legitimate corporate entity will be established in the near future however, CarePoint's statement that it is 100% owned by Sequoia obscures its current corporate status and misrepresents its readiness to enter into a large scale contract.

Prior to the last contract in 2009 (Great Recession), JCMC received $0 from the city in all the years its been serving JC. At the time of the last contract, JCMC was in financial distress and was set to shut it's doors which would have meant Jersey City would be left without ambulatory service since no other ambulance companies were interested in servicing Jersey City.

It is mandated by NJ state that the city must have an ambulance service so the JC city officials at the time had to make a critical decision. ?There was no one else offering ambulatory service bidding at the time so JC was left with only two options: ??
1. Jersey city would have had to build their own city ambulatory fleet, dispatch center and staff it all from nothing. Then maintain this fleet equip the vans with necessary medical equipment. ?The cost would have been astronomical. ??or...
2. Utilize JCMC's infrastructure and fleet, stabilize JCMC books and build from their platform to create a nationally recognized EMT fleet at a much lower cost to the city. Jersey City chose to invest in JCMC through the new contract. ?

Here is briefly how the investment process followed... *The 2009 contract was paid an average of $3.8m per year and $3.9m the last year. ?Those funds were used to stabilize finances and to purchase 14 new ambulances, equipped them with state of art electronics systems and revamp the 911 dispatch center with new motoring like the MARVLIS tracking computer that can predict hot spots based on time of day and 911 call history. ?Statistically it lowers response time by 9% without any change in personal, just by placing ambulances in the strategic ares. ?Now the end result for JCMC EMS is a 40 ambulance fleet with 5 ALS busses, directed by the MARVLIS dispatch system improving the response every year. ?The money that went to JCMC has given the city a nationally recognized non-profit EMS system that is now financially able to reinvest into new ideas and technology. It would be a shame to throw all that investment away now.

The story of why McCabe's 5 year contract in Secaucus was canceled after only one year. The full story is a fascinating read.

"McCabe was required to respond to 911 calls within seven minutes and 59 seconds, barring any extraordinary circumstances. The mayor said that the response time of the second McCabe ambulance has exceeded eight minutes many times over the past couple of months.

The original contract with McCabe also required that two ambulances be stationed in town, but Gonnelli said that this was not always followed."

But all I see from the JCMC side are arguments that JCMC should keep the contract because they have served the city for so long. I'm not very persuaded by that either, especially as it seems like JCMC has been ripping the city off for decades for charging the city money for the contract and all of a sudden they will do it for free now that McCabe will pay $$.

Because almost everyone has a different insurance policy with varying deductibles and out of network agreements, you should call your insurance company and find out what your ambulatory expenses are currently with JCMC EMS and what your ambulatory expenses would be with McCabe. They can look it up and give you an answer.
....
JCMC was paid 3.8 million per year only on their last three year contract. They did not charge before that. I believe that the money was invested into JCMC EMS equipment and technology.

There are many immediate concerns, like if McCabe can put together an ambulatory force in time, and will the performance of McCabe be better than the nationally recognized JCMC EMS. Concerns that are being discussed in most postings. Yes, CarePoint purchased these financially struggling non-profit hospitals and according to the NYT article (see below) raised the prices to predatory levels. They become solvent, but at what cost to the community that they used to serve. These hospitals are big business and run like one and now we have three of them in our immediate area.

It may be nonlinear, but not without context to see this McCabe deal as one of many that CarePoint has been making in Hudson County. It doesn't seem to be much of a reach to ask our civic leaders to look at the big picture, look at the players involved and look at their motivations.

This deal looks like a small play in a much bigger game by CarePoint to fulfill their goal to takeover healthcare services in Hudson County. It is not for the benefit of patients, but for the benefit of their for-profit hospitals. CarePoint purchased Bayonne hospital (a non-profit) and turned it into the most expensive hospital in the country. Now they own Christ Hospital and Hoboken University Medical Center. The deal is one more important step by CarePoint to takeover in Hudson County. $2.6 mil is nothing compared to what they stand to gain at the expense of Jersey City and Hudson County residents. It's a bad deal for Jersey City, but a great deal for CarePoint and for those involved.

I really hope that out council members see the big picture and look at the players. The long term effects of this could be devastating for the residents of Jersey City.

If you haven't yet signed the petition to keep JCMC as our EMS responders please take the time.

This is a terrible move by Fulop and I really just can't see any justified reason for anyone on the council to support the Mayor on this one. JCMC provides the city with excellent service. If McCabe-CarePoint doesn't match or exceed JCMC's service record lives will be put at risk. How is this risky and unnecessary change to our Emergency Response good for the residents of Jersey City?

If it isn't broken don't try to fix it.

I have stainless steel and i have never had any maintenance other than a wet sponge, but that Blanco looks like a very nice sink. If your countertop is laminate you can simply cut out a new hole with a jigsaw as long as it is an over the counter version so that the lip can cover the edge. Does your faucet come through the sink or is it through the counter? Can you post a picture of what you have and also provide the info on the Blanco you are looking at?

I remember hearing something a few years ago of a law being passed that allowed municipalities to be able to put up stop signs without state approval. After some digging I think I found the law?

http://www.njleg.state.nj.us/2008/Bills/A3000/2731_I1.PDF

Stop signs are addressed starting at page 3 line 28

"designate any intersection as a stop or yield intersection and erect appropriate signs, on streets under municipal jurisdiction which are totally self-contained within that municipality and have no direct connection with any street in any other municipality;"

"designate any intersection as a stop intersection and erect appropriate signs, on streets under municipal jurisdiction if that intersection is located within 500 feet of a school, or of a playground or youth recreational facility and the street on which the stop sign will be erected is contiguous to that school, or playground or youth recreational facility."

Thanks for sharing. I guess there are a lot of factors making that intersection dangerous, and a stop sign there makes sense. My concern was more about why there wasn't another stop sign calming the speeding nearer the Atrium. What has been happening on Monmouth is that there has only been one stop sign between Newark and 13th and people floor it after 7th. They'll now floor it after 8th. Ever watch the senior citizens and folks in wheelchairs try to cross Monmouth near the Atrium? If there is traffic, they can't.

I walk Monmouth and Brunswick daily? I know exactly what you are talking about.

There is a very strong argument for stop signs at every intersection up Monmouth as they did with Brunswick and now we have an audience at city hall willing to listen to the residents and take action. Now is the time to capitalize on this momentum and push for more signs, humps and paint any place they are still needed. The Pulaski Skyway is due to close in March and we better get prepared for a big increase in commuter traffic downtown.

? and that building at 9th and Brunswick across the street from A1 Storage is going to be a 143 unit building.

In general I'm not a fan of chain restaurants because they are usually consistently bad. I have only frequented one BCD, the one located on Wilshire Blvd. in Los Angeles and it was good, and it was cheap. A winning combo that kept us going back over and over. There were a few other Korean options on our short list in LA's KTown that got our business and BCD was on it as a great stop for lunch or late night meal. It didn't matter to me that they had other locations and for years I didn't even know. I just think a place like BCD (or a mom and pop version of) would do well in JC, very well. That was basically it.

On the dinner list we often went to Kobawoo House and for the fancy stuff Chosun Galbee. Just in case you were curious.

Do not reduce the importance of pedestrian safety to an us vs. them argument because you have a gripe about moving your foot two inches to the left for a few jaywalkers when the majority of pedestrians are obeying the law. The argument is weak if not insulting.

Re: Kitchen Sink Replacement questions

There are some variables that can make a simple change complicated. Getting a sink of the same dimensions is one of them. The other is how the faucet is currently installed. You may have to consider getting a slightly larger sink and having some of the counter cut back.

If you are hard set on going SS I would recommend going to a kitchen specialty place like Ferguson with photos and accurate measurements of the current sink and the counter cutout. They can help you figure out what sink would possibly fit and do the instal. If you don't like what they offer it doesn't cost you anything to go in and have them investigate your options.

Another option to think about is getting your cast iron sink refurbished. If you like the sink it can be removed, repaired and refinished. Consider the idea of picking any color you would like.

Re: Boy hit by car at Hamilton Park
Home away from home
Home away from home

From my experience of trying to get a STOP sign installed, JC Traffic will only put in a STOP sign if they are forced to by state law. They put their 'car counting hose' across the the street and if it doesn't break the magic number? no STOP sign. We had a petition with over 100 signatures from just 2 blocks of 8th street, photographs of many smashed cars and the support of Steve Fulop. All we got were NO PARKING signs that are not being enforced.

In my opinion the BIG problem is the disconnect between traffic/parking enforcement and the JC Traffic Division. Traffic Division is concerned with flow of traffic through our streets and drivers that break the laws are "not their department". It makes sense? Drivers should always come to a full stop at STOP signs, stop for pedestrians in crosswalks and parking regulations should be enforced. JC Traffic Division operates under the assumption that those laws are being obeyed.

So then it becomes an enforcement issue. Does JCPA enforce parking on corners and in crosswalks? Most often not and why? Does JCPD have the manpower to enforce traffic violations on a scale that could create a change in the driving atmosphere for pedestrians? ???

Under our new Fulop administration I would like to see some cooperation between JCPD, JCPA and JC Traffic Division to fix the problem before more people are hurt for the sake of inaction. If traffic enforcement is off the table and we want to let cars park up to the crosswalks, then Traffic Division should be instructed instal an all way STOP at every intersection.
