New Years Eve...that is one of those "public" housing "low income" townhouses behind the Old Colony shopping center. In the past there has also been injured people who were dropped in that area since it is near the Hospital - since the friends dropping the injured don't want to be on hospital cameras.

Multiple boats are reportedly on fire at a Jersey City marina.

The Hoboken and New York City Fire Department were responded to assist, according to the Hoboken Fire Department's Twitter.

There was not immediate confirmation of any injuries, although the Hoboken Fire Department tweeted, "One civilian reportedly treated by EMS."

The fire was reportedly under control before 11 p.m.

Was George Bailey really a Jersey guy?

Though you won't see many clues when "It's a Wonderful Life" gets its traditional airing on NBC this Christmas Eve, the beloved holiday movie has deep New Jersey roots.

The classic film got its unlikely start as a humble Christmas card sent by a Rutgers University graduate. And its fictional Bedford Falls setting was actually inspired by a small town in Hunterdon County with an iron bridge that became a focal point of the movie.

Philip Van Doren Stern, a history writer who grew up in Jersey City, woke up one morning near the end of the Great Depression with the idea for a story about a suicidal man who is stopped from jumping off a bridge by a guardian angel who shows him the true joy of living.

Stern spent years writing and rewriting the tale, but his agent failed to sell it to everything from The Saturday Evening Post to farm journals.

So, Stern put up his own money to have the story printed as a pamphlet in the midst of World War II. He sent it to 200 friends and family members as a Christmas card.

Three months later, the phone rang at the family's house in Brooklyn.

"Hold me up! I can't believe it!" his daughter recalled Stern shouting as he listened to a Western Union operator read him a telegram over the phone.

His Christmas card story, called "The Greatest Gift", had somehow made it to Hollywood. His agent had sold the rights to his story for $10,000 (the equivalent of about $139,000 in today's money) to a studio that wanted to turn it into a movie.

The story languished for a few years in Hollywood as different screen writers tried to adapt it and Cary Grant toyed with starring in the film. Grant eventually passed and the rights ended up with director Frank Capra, who said he was drawn to the story's message that no one is a failure and no man is poor if he has friends.

Capra's "It's a Wonderful Life" -- which premiered 71 years ago this week -- initially got mixed reviews and was considered a box office flop.

But the film, staring Jimmy Stewart as small-town banker George Bailey, steadily found new life over the years as it aired on television and grew into a Christmas classic. (It airs this Christmas Eve at 8 p.m. on NBC. It will also be screened in various New Jersey movie theaters on Christmas Eve, including multiplexes in South Plainfield, North Brunswick and Hazlet.)

Both Capra and Stewart later said the film, the first both made after serving in World War II, was their favorite.

Stewart said in interviews he was heartened to know the movie -- with its iconic scene of him running through Bedford Falls shouting "Merry Christmas, you wonderful old Building and Loan!" -- had become an integral part of the holiday for many families.

"They put up the tree, they get people in, and they all watch 'It's a Wonderful Life'. It's part of the annual ritual now. That means a great deal to me," Stewart said in an interview for the 1986 "The 'It's a Wonderful Life' Book".

For the Stern family, the film was a dream come true.

Marguerite Stern Robinson, the author's only child, remembered hand delivering some of the original 1943 Christmas cards to her teachers and friends when she was in the third grade. Her father, who was of mixed religious background, told his daughter the tale was set at Christmas, but was meant to be a universal story.

"Starting with those 200 Christmas cards, my father's story has reached millions of people," Robinson wrote in the afterword to an edition of "The Greatest Gift" published in 1996 for the film's 50th anniversary.

Stern was born in Wyalusing, Pa., but grew up mostly in New Jersey. He went to grammar school and high school in Jersey City, graduated from Rutgers and started his career working in Newark.

Though Capra is believed to have modeled the fictional Bedford Falls in Westchester County in his film after Seneca Falls in upstate New York, Stern said his original story was actually set in New Jersey.

"Incidentally," Stern said in a 1946 newspaper interview, "the movie takes place in Westchester County. Actually, the town I had in mind was Califon, N.J."

Califon, a borough in Hunterdon County with about 1,000 residents, has Victorian-style houses and a small downtown. It also has a historic iron bridge spanning the South Branch of the Raritan River, similar to the one that George Pratt (later renamed George Bailey in the film) considers jumping from in "The Greatest Gift."

In the opening of his story, Stern writes: "The little town straggling up the hill was bright with colored Christmas lights. But George Pratt did not see them. He was leaning over the railing of the iron bridge, staring down moodily at the black water."

Despite the success of the film, Stern's contribution to "It's a Wonderful Life" was not considered one of his biggest accomplishments. When the grandfather of three died of heart attack at age 83 in Florida in 1984, the headline of his obituary in the New York Times read "Philip Van Doren Stern dies; A specialist on Civil War era".

Stern authored more than 40 books, including "The Life and Writings of Abraham Lincoln." He also worked as an editor at Simon & Schuster and other publishers. During World War II, he was general manager of a service that provided books to soldiers.

Over the years, Stern stayed close to Rutgers, where he graduated in 1924. He was the first in his family to attend college, his daughter said.

He helped found the Rutgers University Press in the 1930s, university officials said. After publishing a book on Abraham Lincoln, Stern was invited back to Rutgers to receive an honorary doctorate during a 1940 convocation ceremony held on Lincoln's birthday.

He was also invited by Rutgers to write a pamphlet in 1941, called "Rutgers University and the American Way of Life", in honor of the campus' 175th birthday.

Robinson, Stern's daughter, wrote that her father knew he had left behind something enduring with his contribution to "It's a Wonderful Life".

"'The Greatest Gift' is as compelling today as it was 50 years ago, because in this little book lies a powerful message about the significance of the lives of all of us," Robinson wrote in 1996. "As for its author, Philip Van Doren Stern, I borrow a line from Harry Bailey: 'He was the richest man in town.'"

MIDTOWN MANHATTAN, NY ? Police have arrested a man in connection with an explosion inside the Port Authority Bus Terminal Monday morning, the NYPD said.
The explosion happened at about 7:30 a.m., police said. The station and the A, C and E subway lines were evacuated at the bus station, police said.
The suspect was carrying a pipe bomb in his backpack inside the terminal when it exploded unintentionally, a law enforcement source told Patch.

JERSEY CITY, N.J. (CBSNewYork) ? A planned building project at Liberty State Park is making waves.

Some people fear the waterfront project will ruin the majestic views.

Liberty State Park is an urban backyard. A peaceful spot to escape the city with clear views of the Veranzano bridge and lady liberty, but Sam Pesin and others say the slice of serenity could be obstructed by boats.

?This is an obscene giveaway. A corporate takeover of a non-commercial, urban, family, peaceful, picnicking side of the park,? Pesin said.

Pesin is fighting a new plan to commercialize the southern end of the public park with a mile long private marina. Renderings were obtained by the Friends of Liberty State Park through a Freedom of Information request and confirmed by the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection.

Pesin said the picnic area is jam-packed on summer nights, and so are the parking lots which may be taken away.

Suntex, which operates the marina at the north end, would like to build another private marine ? leasing 45 acres on the southern end for new docks and private parking, paying $900,000 in annual rent to the state for the first three years.

?Having mega-yachts right next to this lawn behind the Statue of Liberty would be an international symbol of everything that?s wrong with America,? Pesin said.

The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection said the private leases would help generate revenue for the park and save taxpayer money by offsetting the cost to repair damaged bulkheads and other upgrades.

Local Noel Perez agreed the area could use a makeover.

?It?s been a long time,? he said.

While John Neider enjoys it just the way it is.

?I think it?s going to disturb the wildlife,? he said.

Greg Remaud with New York/New Jersey Baykeepers said it?s a social justice issue.

?This is the only place in north Jersey for several miles, where you can actually get down, touch the water, throw in a fishing pole,? he said, ?People from all economic levels are able to make it here. Now it will be shut off except to the wealthiest who can afford yachts, and leasing expensive yacht space.?

Suntex did not respond to a request for comment, but its plans include a children?s sailing school, replacement of the public boat launch, a fishing pier, a boat club, and other amenities that will be available to the public.

There will be several public hearings before the proposal is approved by the state.

You'd think that Gov. Christie would have learned by now that Liberty State Park is not for sale, but as a parting thumb-in-the-eye to the 5 million people who visit the crown jewel of our park system, he wants to drop a massive yacht marina on its shoreline.

Essentially, he thinks that picnic and fishing areas need a few hundred fuel-sucking monsters that spit noise and smoke and crud into the tidal salt marsh while blocking everybody's view of the upper bay.

This administration would try to privatize anything that isn't nailed down, and this is another bridge too far. Our Department of Environmental Protection wants to lease a 500-yard stretch of waterline for marina development on the south side - the noncommercial side of the park - to the Texas-based company that runs the marina on park's north end.

The cost? No charge, as long as the same company repairs a damaged bulkhead in the existing marina.

The consequences, however, are horrendous: According to the lease term sheet obtained by Friends of Liberty State Park, two parking lots for nearly 250 vehicles get bulldozed.

Worse, they also ignore that the park's south zone is a family place. It is where picnic benches and barbeque pits sit under a magnificent grove of sycamores tilted in perfect symmetry - away from the promenade traffic - and where people fish off the jettys and launch their kayaks.

Here, you have an unobstructed view of the Verrazano-Narrows.

Now that vista will be blocked by a fleet of Ocean Alexanders, trailer storage facilities, and giant fences.

Or just picture Tony Soprano at the wheel of Stugots and multiply it by a hundred.

The families don't need this. No park needs this.

And when the DEP holds the required public hearings on the issue - preferably after the holidays - the governor must hear about it.

We're not against all development. Public amenities are valuable, and even though there is no rule that says parks must make money, LSP generates $1.5 million annually from two restaurants and the north marina.

But our governor's commercial obsession runneth over. In 2014, he tried to shift park control to a commission that oversees development. In 2015, his DEP floated a hotel and a fieldhouse. Each time he loses the debate, because you can't protect sacred ground by taking it from the people whose taxes pay for it.

Three years ago, our state's top scientists and academics told Christie to lay off Liberty State Park, because it is the standard for urban ecological stewardship and "one of the nation's best examples of the Public Trust Doctrine."

We can't say it better than that, Governor. Now kindly back away before you can't resist the urge to do further damage.

Jersey City seeks to expand liquor sales on Christmas, New Year's Eves

JERSEY CITY -- Liquor stores in Jersey City may have a lucrative holiday season after all, with the City Council expected to approve a measure that would allow them to start selling booze three hours early on Christmas and New Year's Eves.

The two days are some of the busiest of the year for liquor sales, but this year they fall on Sunday, when stores are banned from selling alcohol before noon. The measure before the council would allow liquor stores' doors to open at 9 a.m. on Christmas and New Year's Eves, no matter what day they fall on.

Thomas McGarry, a manager at the Jersey City Super Buy-Rite, who supports the measure, said besides giving liquor stores a boost, it would also help liquor consumers plan their activities for those two days.

"Being able to get what you need earlier would benefit everyone," McGarry said.

The idea was proposed by ShopRite Liquors of Jersey City, an affiliate of Inserra ShopRite, which owns the Marin Boulevard location. Ira Weiner, an attorney representing the company, wrote a letter to Corporation Counsel Jeremy Farrell earlier this month suggesting the change and saying he was writing to them because his client had reached out to the city and had not heard back.

"These businesses depend on these days to carry them through the leaner months of the year," Weiner wrote. "While this circumstance only arises every six or seven years, the inability to open at a normal 9 a.m. hour this year would be a significant hardship on not only my client, but all other liquor establishments in Jersey City."

Inserra is a big backer of Mayor Steve Fulop. The mayor's campaign reports show Inserra Supermarkets gave his re-election bid $2,560, while its CEO, Lawrence R. Inserra Jr., gave $3,100 to Fulop and an additional $1,000 to Fulop's council slate.

Inserra Supermarkets also gave Coalition for Progress, a super PAC linked to Fulop's now-abandoned gubernatorial run, $20,000 while its owner, CEO, vice presidents and project manager gave an additional $15,000 combined.

Asked whether Inserra's support for the mayor holds any sway with the administration over this measure, city spokeswoman Jennifer Morrill said, "The mayor doesn't have a strong opinion one way or another whether the council supports or rejects this ordinance, however, it does seem like a common sense, one-time change that benefits hundreds of business owners across the city and thousands of residents in Jersey City that do last-minute shopping on Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve."

The council earlier this year changed the laws on liquor sales to let Liberty National sell cocktails before noon at the Presidents Cup.

The council meets on Wednesday at 6 p.m. at City Hall, 280 Grove St.

JERSEY CITY -- Friends of Liberty State Park is planning a protest next week to show opposition to a plan it says the state is mulling to add a marina to the south end of the park.

State officials have not confirmed there is a plan, but a source with knowledge of the matter told The Jersey Journal that the state is mulling a lease with Suntex Marina to open a private marina along the waterfront near the park's flag plaza. Suntext runs the marina on park's north end.

Friends of Liberty State Park is asking anyone in opposition to a second marina in the 1,200-acre park to meet at the south side picnic area, 200 Morris Pesin Dr., for a group protest photo on Saturday, Dec. 2 at 11 a.m.

Park advocates say a new marina would obstruct views, limit public access to the park and potentially threaten wildlife.

A spokesman for the state Department of Environmental Protection, which runs the park, has said only that the public would have a say on any proposed changes to Liberty State Park.

Mayor Steve Fulop said he is "adamantly opposed" to the marina plan.

"We feel that Liberty State Park doesn't need another marina and the fact that these proposed changes were being done initially in secret speaks to the lack of integrity to the process," Fulop said in an email. "It is a bad plan and we will explore every option to fight it."

Don't take parkland away

Dear Commissioner Martin,

I have lived in Jersey City for more than 20 years, and although I love many things about my city, the lack of green, open space for our communities is a point of serious concern. A growing city needs to balance development with access to public land, and this decision made by the state will severely impact our city and residents.

The outgoing governor and administration should not be allowed to lease our park away to the highest bidder without public hearings and a public comment period. The South Overlook Lawn is a haven for our residents, a place to picnic, play, bike, walk, fish and enjoy the view of the Hudson River and Lady Liberty. A commercial marina will significantly change the footprint of the park and our access and use of the southside lawn.

The residents of Jersey City, and the surrounding areas, deserve access to open land and public parks. Do not take that away without hearing us out first.

Protect Liberty State Park from development

The Hudson County Group of the New Jersey Chapter of the Sierra Club has passed a resolution to oppose the development of a marina on the south shore of Liberty State Park.


The Hudson County Group is concerned with environmental justice issues and feels that putting yet another marina for wealthy boat owners in Liberty State Park is a theft of the people's common land. These open green and free spaces should be made available for the poor, oppressed workers and immigrants who love and need this park as much as anyone else.

Building a marina on the south side of Liberty State Park also risks damage to the natural environment of the Cove area where various rare and endangered species have been seen, such as the Snowy Owl, the Norther Harrier and the Goshawk.

We call upon our state, county and city governments to do what they can to protect this area of Liberty State Park so that the people will have access to view wildlife and have an open view unobstructed by the toys of the wealthy.

LSP is the only park for the east side of Jersey City

I am an 18-year resident of downtown Jersey City. Liberty State Park is the only recreational park that the residents on the east side of Jersey City have. The park already has major developments in Liberty Marina on the North side and Liberty National golf course on the South side,

The South side is a major recreation and picnic area for residents of Greenville. Placing another marina there would greatly restrict those areas and the enjoyment of resident of all residents of Jersey City. In the warmer months, I bike to the park daily and ride along the waterside path to the south side. I enjoy the vistas and seeing people fishing, kiting, walking, running and biking in the park.

A new marina on the south side of the park would restrict the usable areas of the park. This is all we have. The park is also a magnet for visitors from the four corners of the globe. Another marina is not what we need, we need more open space as the city is building higher and getting more crowded.

The NJDEP needs to have a public hearing to hear the concerns of the local residents.

The proposed commercial marina at the south end of Liberty State Park would be a travesty. It would obstruct the priceless views of the harbor and would bring more traffic to the park.

I agree with the Friends of Liberty State Park that this private facility is counter to the purpose of a public park. In addition, it could severely affects the Caven Point Natural Area with its wildlife habitat.

I have urged the state's commissioner of Environmental Protection to reject this proposal and encourage others to do as well.

The overwhelming majority of people living in New Jersey (and New York and everywhere) strongly oppose a new marina at Liberty State Park.

We demand public hearings and a public comment period. You work for the people, not the one percent, and the people want parks for peaceful places for picnics and play, not private spaces only for private development and profit. Parks for for people, not profit!

I am a long-time resident of Jersey City and I will continue to fight with Sam Pesin and the thousands of others who love this sacred park and appreciate ALL open, public, green spaces. We promise you this: we will not allow you or your degenerate crony capitalist cohort get away with it. We're watching you all, we are shining a bright light on you all, and we are holding you accountable for your despicable malfeasance.
