Perhaps this discount had nothing to do with religon at all. On Saturday's and Sundays there are hundreds of people that go to the Stanley for their services. I would think they gave discount parking prices because these people were attending a large event and without these people parking in the garage it might be less occupied.

You see discounted parking for events all the time. If you are not going to the event then you do not get the discount. It seems like a good business opportunity to fill up your garage.

The garage is going to be filled up anyway. It's a preference to the organization, no subsidy.

Jury duty in Hudson County gets you no parknig subsidy. You pay more than twice as much for daily parking as you get for your service.

If you're interested in learning about the Dutch period - 1609 to about 1670 - don't miss this film.

The Dutch influence continued on in full effect long past the English political take-over of the area, and actually continues till today.

Discussion following the film.

Can anyone recommend a small appliance (food processor) repair tech?

The blade stem on my Kitchenaid food processor is stuck and won't come off. Apparently, it's something that happens to these things sometimes. It's recommended to let a repair tech fix it.

There is one in Bayonne, a couple in Weehawken. Can anyone recommend any of them, either way?

Thanks.

Re: Jersey City Art Map
Home away from home
Home away from home

Subjective is a good word.

Look, there are some artists who are visible here who make and show their work mainly in Jersey City. But most people who make art on a consistent basis don't show in only one place.

I would say that most of the visual artists on your map show their art OUTSIDE of Jersey City, maybe more often than they show it IN Jersey City. You don't know about it, because you're only looking here.

It's almost like this map is just for you and your friends. You've got a bubble here that's skewed to your perceptions only and yet trying to be concrete. (It's kind of like an art piece about which artists you like, almost.)

If you're going to map Jersey City artists because they live and work here, go ahead. But you might re-think leaving people out because they get around. As you get more information, you'd have to eliminate a lot of people.

I think it's $8.99 / lb.

I had $6.00 worth of their lasagna with salad two Fridays ago and it was plenty for me.

a person wrongly accused is TERRIBLE thing and can be a violation in itself, for sure.

but, imo, the worst possible scenario is disbelieving a victim -- i still don't know why you would do this out of hand -- so that she grows into an emotionally unhealthy adult and the perpetrator gets away with it, free to repeat the act.

we're not in court.

in general, in the real world, we should absolutely BEGIN with believing the child and moving forward, soberly, from there.

to assume the child is NOT telling the truth sets up too many negatives in deference to one potential positive.

Re: Bagua Juice - Out of Business
Home away from home

As it happens, isn't that where Grove Street Books used to be? They left because of the rent hikes.

I've heard that some of the businesses on Grove near City Hall get rent subsidies -- just heard, but I think I heard it here even -- couldn't someone subsidize a freaking bookstore? Garrad (Imagine Atrium) held discussion groups and film screenings and took an interest in the community and just couldn't make a go because the landlords weren't in JC and didn't care about whether the store was good for the community. He tried to work with them every way he could, but they were not in the least flexible to allow him to stay open.

I'm not saying an investor shouldn't make their coin, but if profiteering is the only motivation for any business decision, there's no avenue for small businesses that improve quality of life but don't make a lot of income to flourish, and the community loses.

Frankly, I find that most small business owners take that balance into account and are flexible because their customer base is in the community. An out-of-town landlord with no investment other than the $ has no incentive to care.

Rally Calling for Excellence in Jersey City Schools
Home away from home
Home away from home

PCUE - Parents & Communities United for Education

will be holding a RALLY

on Tuesday, Sept. 8, 2009, from 12 noon to 1:00 pm, in front of Public School # 11, 886 Bergen Avenue, Jersey City

to highlight the urgent call to graduate ALL our youth/children from high school and provide them with a quality education that prepares them for college and the world of work. The current Jersey City educational policies and practices are not working, as evidenced by the alarming rates of drop-out and failure to obtain a high school diploma ? rates that are crippling the future of too many Jersey City youth.

PCUE will call on the Jersey City Board of Education and the School District Superintendent Dr. Charles Epps to implement bold and innovative actions being proposed by the PCUE?s high school campaign platform. The proposals call on district officials to build genuine partnership with parents and the community, to provide effective student support programs, to support our teachers and school staff, and to upgrade computer technology labs and make them accessible to all students.

PCUE is a grassroots organization of parents, grandparents, and concerned members of the community. It is a chapter of the Statewide Education Organizing Committee of NJ (SEOC). PCUE is a grassroots and direct action organization working to improve Jersey City public schools. Over the course of last year PCUE launched a successful campaign to assure that school officials test all our schools for lead in the drinking water, notify parents and the community of the testing schedule and test results, and provide all public school children with safe water.

For more information about PCUE:
169-A Martin Luther King Drive, Jersey City, NJ 07305

I agree, Tino. The only thing that should come second to political correctness is our own prejudices and fears.

What we think of as "political correctness" can be a guide when we admit we're conditioned to make stupid assumptions -- like that a doctor is a man or a that black woman can't afford an expensive dress or that a South Asian person must want hot and spicy food -- because when we assume, we do indeed make an "ass" out of "u" and "me".

Sometimes those differences just don't matter AT ALL.
Sometimes they matter a LOT.

Examples:

People ask me about someone's appearance as we're trying to decide if we're thinking of the same person. I say, "About 5'10", like 50-60 years old man, white, had a slight limp." (Funny, people usually find it mildly amusing when I mention if a person is white.)

Or, I say, "She was kind of heavy, big chested, light-skinned, had braids, but I think it was a weave."

beware.

The banks are not trying to keep ahead of the hackers. There is no attempt to add security mechanisms to these cards. The cards were copied by scanning them through the same machine used to scan them to make a purchase. This has been possible for decades. It's not like it's an arms race here, the banks just don't care.

Anyway anyone mature enough to have a bank account and be making purchases is able to understand the risks of using a debit card habitually. Not to mention the failure to improve your credit score by not showing credit card use when you could have.

Actually no one should be learning at this point in the game about skimmers being attached to ATMs, or about waiters copying cards while they carry them away. This has been public knowledge for years and is in the news every few months. I wonder sometimes how people can be so unaware of the world.

I figure anyone who doesn't know about them should be learning.

The odds are there's a lot about this world you know nothing about.
