I'm troubled by Dan's accusation that this donation was "wheeling." I'm not aware of any evidence that the source of Singleton's donation was a contribution from someone who otherwise would have been forbidden from donating to the Fulop campaign.

Unless there's some evidence, Dan is making a reckless accusation.

Would any of the P2P proposals outright forbid any politician from contributing to any other politician? I don't think so. My understanding is that wheeling must be when a forbidden donor makes the donation to a third party who turns right around and gives it to the candidate.

If any of our neighbors would like to voice their thoughts/ideas/concerns before we make a potential formal written plea to the city, we encourage you to come tomorrow evening.

Was there any major news from the VVPA meeting about the bridge? (Sorry I couldn't attend.)

There's a meeting coming up next week about the LSP Circulator study, but that seems to be more about having shuttles to/from LSP and within the park. Although it wouldn't surprise me if the bridge topic came up.

The worst crowding that I see on 33-JSQ is after 7:00 pm, when the schedule goes back to only every 10 minutes. The crowding between 7 and 9 pm is downright unsafe.

A simple step toward easing the problem would be to continue 33-JSQ trains every 5 minutes from 7:00 pm until 9:00 pm.

Meanwhile the 33-HOB trains could revert to 10-minute service at 7:00 pm without a problem. Those trains still have empty seats even with 10-minute service.

The pruning technique on Monmouth appears to be pollarding. Don't know how well that works with Bradford pear. It's often done with plane trees.

Is the museum open today?

I've seen the postings that it is open Saturdays from noon to 3, but I called to check and the number is disconnected.

Thanks.

Completely agree. For instance on Columbus Drive -- a high-density traffic area but with plenty of room for bike lanes.

Re: Buses to Manhattan
Home away from home
Home away from home

Regarding the ferry service, NY Waterway reports ferry service should be back to normal tomorrow for Paulus Hook. Last week they were under a Coast Guard order to stop service before sundown, probably because of concern that there was debris in the water. There's no specific information today, but if there's regular service tomorrow, there should be ferry service all day long to World Financial Center and the regular (limited) service to the midtown dock. (Last PH boat from 39th St. leaves at 7:30 pm; last PH boat from WFC at 9:36 pm.)

Regarding the bus, it seems like the best bet is to get yourself to Journal Square. I haven't been on the jitney vans in awhile but I think they are $1.50 now. Or take the NJ Transit #80 from Grove Path Plaza to JSQ. It's $1.50 cash only, exact fare required. Schedules are on the website.

Then take either the 119 or the 125 to Port Authority. It's $4.25 exact cash fare inbound. The 119 is on Platform D-3 and the 125 is on Platform C-4. Also there was a post on another thread that you can also get a commuter van at Platform B-2 for $3. (Thanks itgirl.)

On the return, it appears that the 119 leaves Port Authority from Gate 1 and that you can pay $4.25 cash or with a ticket. (Somebody correct me if that's wrong.) Or you can take the 125 from Gate 214, but you must have a ticket, no cash accepted.

And apparently when you board at the Port Authority, you can pay an extra $0.70 to get a transfer that you should be able to use to take the #80 bus back from JSQ to Grove Plaza. I don't know whether you pay that in cash or need a ticket.

Or, itgirl posted that you can take a $3 commuter van from Gate 51 at Port Authority. I haven't verified that.

Good luck everyone!

Re: where is the county clerk?
Home away from home

If you have enough time, you can apply by mail rather than in person. Instructions are here. The application form to fill out is here in PDF. Print it 2-sided, fold and seal and put on a stamp.

The instructions say:
Please note: a voter may apply for a Mail-In Ballot by mail up to 7 days prior to the election, or he or she may apply in person to the County Clerk's Office until 3 p.m. the day before the election.

So October 30 is the last day they will accept a mailed application to vote by mail, and November 5 is the last day to apply in person.

If you do go in person, turn off Montgomery on Florence and follow it around to Cornelison, or turn off Summit and go down Wayne. If you drive, there is a visitor parking lot on Cornelison but you'll have to look carefully at the signs to find the right one.

full capacity for Jersey City. when I go home, the Hoboken-bound train pulls into Christopher St. at the peak of rush hour with empty seats. then the JSQ train follows and it is crammed, cheek-to-jowl.

how hard is it for the PA to do a study, and adjust the number of trains accordingly? there should really be three JSQ-33rd Street trains for every two HOB-33rd.

this isn't a signal or platform-length issue. it's a question of resource-management and traffic control.

You're absolutely right. Regardless of signal issues or platform-length issues, there could be and should be trains every 4 or 5 minutes to Jersey City for more of the day. In the morning, inbound trains to 33 St. go to 10 minute service at 9:30 a.m., but the trains are packed until 10:30. In the evening, outbound trains from 33 St. go to 10 minute service at 7 p.m. but are totally packed all through the evening. And every train is packed all through the weekend. The answer is to continue the frequent service, every 4-5 minutes, for longer portions of the day.

Another amazing fact: Current ridership is estimated at 78 million this year. On the PATH website history page, it says the peak ridership was 113 million in 1927. There is no possibility that those trains were 45% more full than they are now. There must have been frequent service all day long. It would be interesting to see historic PATH timetables.

Re: Wayne Street Issues

I walk on that block every day and have never had a problem. There's a regular group that sits out there playing bingo or dominoes, while their little kids run around with a little chihuahua. Hardly intimidating!

However, there also are several guys who might be involved in drug dealing. You have to wonder when you see a car with fully-tinted windows double park, someone gets out for a quick stop with these guys, then drives off. But even these guys have seemed respectful and I have never had a problem. I've never witnessed any "intimidation tactics."

It would be good to see at least occasional police presence at the park. It's very rare.

Restoration to the 1938 tax photos is a nice compromise. It doesn't require us to recreate history long-gone and unavailable by any historical record, but at least it gets us back to something before the hideous renovations of the 1950s, '60s and '70s.

Agreed -- Wayne between Jersey and Varick is very nice. But we have had a couple of car windows broken into recently. And it's always smart to keep your awareness up and your headphones not in your ears when walking alone at night.

Formerly E, now F. Wayne, Mercer, Montgomery west of Jersey; Varick, Brunswick. Looks like it includes Dixon Mills, too. We formerly were in E4 and voted at PS 3 on Bright Street. If the new district F28 is limited to this little neighborhood, the logical voting place still would be at PS 3, not a mile and half away at the MLK school.

I'll be tempted to go to PS 3 and vote provisionally.

I called the Board of Elections today and left a message. Never heard back.

Vigilante, I'm also still wondering about the building with the columns on the SE corner of Hamilton Park, where St. Francis Hospital was built later. I've been looking in other historic photos but haven't found an answer yet.

That's it! The Bing bird's eye photo very clearly shows the distinctive roof line of the church on Pavonia. Thanks!

Now I'm wondering what happened to the apartment building on the southeast corner of Ninth and Coles. Here is a current view. The vertical raised brick stripes on the north face are the same, so it must be the same building -- but 3 stories now instead of 5. Maybe there was a bad fire at some point and they capped the surviving structure at 3 stories rather than rebuild.

And the shopfront that I mistook for Wonder Bagel is just gone. It's now a side yard for a house at Coles and Tenth.

Looking at the photo of the train wreck, maybe those double steeples are the church on First between Jersey and Erie.

Historic photo question
Home away from home
Home away from home

Resized Image

Can anybody figure out which blocks appear in this photo? It's supposedly Jersey City. Here's the link.

At first I was thinking the picture is over Railroad Avenue (now Christopher Columbus), looking south between Jersey and Varick, and the shop window in the lower left is where Wonder Bagel is located now. But the buildings on the left side don't correspond to what we see on Jersey Avenue now. There's a 5-story apartment building one block back, and the building with Esperanto Pizza at Jersey and Wayne is only 4 stories. And there's no library. So my first thought must be wrong.

But that 5-story apartment building looks familiar. There's also the back of what looks like a church in the upper right. I've tried matching up the buildings from Columbus, from the Sixth Street Embankment, and the Tenth Street Embankment, and I'm stuck. Can any of you figure it out?

The website this came from has some other fun historic pictures. Here is a picture of Hamilton Park from the Tenth Street Erie embankment, with the NYC skyline in the background. Click on "View full size" to get all the detail.

Also, here is a photo of a train wreck that I think is supposed to be at Columbus and Brunswick, although I haven't figured out that double steeple in the background.

Enjoy!

No. There isn't more capacity on the system.

I don't entirely agree. For the evening rush, they run a train every 5 minutes on the JSQ-33 line from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Then it goes back to a 10-minute schedule. So there is capacity for 5-minute frequency.

Some of the most crowded trains are in the hour after the schedule reverts to every 10 minutes. I'd like to see trains every 5 minutes until 8 p.m., or even 8:30 or 9:00.

Congrats to all in Column D! Looking forward to seeing the results and hearing how much progress has been made.

It's disappointing to see the remainder of the election results and see that the HCDO candidate often has 99% of the vote. This is not a sign of a healthy democracy. It's like old Soviet elections.

Here's to robust democracy instead of old party patronage.

They have these signs all over Hoboken and many other NJ towns. I have seen only one in JC, on Greene behind the Harborside buildings. I heard Steve Fulop say at a meeting a few months ago that the city's traffic/planning department seems to be uninterested in these signs.

Perhaps with a new mayor we could change priorities in the traffic/planning department . . . .
