Re: Pet Death

It's actually not legal to bury animals in Jersey City, especially on public land. A lot of people still do it though. You can have a veterinarian or other licensed agency cremate the pet for you, though this can be pricey, especially if you want the ashes returned to you. Liberty Humane Society can also have the body disposed for you and it's pretty cheap (not sure what they'd charge for a bird). The cheapest, easiest way would be to dispose of the body with your regular trash pick up. It's certainly not nice to think about, but it is acceptable. Just make sure you bag up the body well so as to not encourage other animals from scavenging.

Sorry for your loss.

I live in that area (Belmont btw. Bergen/Kennedy) and have not had any problems whatsoever. There are definitely some sketchy people/areas (across Communipaw or down, closer to Bergen) but everyone generally minds their business and I've found most people to be friendly and neighborly. If you use your head and don't look for trouble you'll be fine. Parking is also generally not an issue, which is a bonus.

This whole situation is just awful. I can't even imagine what the husband is going through. I'm glad they caught the perp.

I live a few blocks away, on Belmont between Kennedy and Bergen and I'll reiterate what a lot of people are saying....the neighborhood has it's good and bad, but overall it's just fine. I avoid Bergen Ave., especially at night, but parking is usually no problem and I've found the neighbors to be very friendly. I used to live downtown too, but I'm quite happy here!

How's this getting interesting? Where's the indication that these dogs were trained to kill, fight, or attack?

Everything at B. Dalton is 30% off now, plus other savings. I've gotten a few good finds for like $5-$10. I definitely plan on going back in the next few weeks as prices are reduced.

Oh wibbit, wibbit....let's not get all personal now with the name calling. As a pit bull owner, I actually agree with you to an extent. While I think attempted murder is a stretch, I absolutely think there should be some charges brought against the owner and the dog(s) should be declared potentially dangerous. As much as I believe it's my right to own any dog I want, I also feel that morons who allow things like this to happen (whatever the breed) should have to answer for their actions.

I would hope that Bayonne animal control is going to follow up with a potentially dangerous dog hearing for the male dog, at the very least. It's unclear from the article whether the female was actually part of the attack.

jaah37 - dogs do not need to be leashed when they're in a backyard but the moment they're off the owner's property they can (and should) be cited.

Do we have to have this debate every time?! Some of us like pit bulls, some of us don't. None of us ever changes our minds, so what's the point?

I have never ever had an experience like that and more often than not, I don't buy candy from them. A polite, "no thank you" and it ends there.

You don't have to give them money if you don't want to, but there's no reason to go out of your way to prevent them from making a little bit of money in a perfectly harmless way.

Oh yeah, selling candy is just about the worst thing ever. Let's all complain so they can't do it anymore. Hopefully then they'll go back to Greenville where they belong.

Just because they're black doesn't mean they're gangbangers.

And yes, many of these kids are not selling chocolate/candy to raise money for school or charity (some are). A lot of them simply sell the stuff to make some pocket change. I throw them a bone once and a while.

x2 for Jersey City Tattoo Co.

Adam and Chuck are both excellent tattooers. I got a silly joke tattoo by their "walk in guy" that I'm happy with too.

I think it's more the ridiculousness of PETA holding a cutest kid veggie contest (if not the ridiculousness of PETA themselves) that elicited the reaction.

You can't take anything serious when PETA is involved.

The point you fail to grasp is that kids like Fat Joe. They don't give a crap about what Mr. Master's Degree says. They are going to be more interested and more apt to listen to someone they respect and admire (even if that admiration is questionable - they're kids). If Fat Joe is encouraging kids to go to school and get an education, what's the big deal.

Canis Minor is your place if you're looking for high quality pet supplies. They have a huge supply of the super premium brands as well as raw. They're also very community oriented - they have bulletin boards for pet related postings and are huge supporters of Liberty Humane Society.

The Pet Company in Newport Mall is the devil. Not only do they sell ridiculous amounts of puppymill puppies but it's crowded and filthy and usually filled with screaming children. Your money is spent better elsewhere.

Some people just love to hate!

While I'm not saying I think everyone who lives in the projects are immoral, poverty ridden people, the projects are not typically known for being nice, safe places to live. I can't say that limiting the types of pets owned in them is a bad thing. I think it would be smarter to just put a size limit rather than single out "dangerous breeds" which is just ridiculous.

I have two pit bulls and two Dachshunds....care to guess who bites? (Hint - not the pit bulls).

It would be wonderful if anyone who hasn't signed up yet would do so in support of LHS. Zootoo will be visiting us on Sunday to see if we're worthy of the top prize - and we can use all the points we can get!

Feel free to stop by Sunday, they'll be there at 9am!
