Well done. I couldn't even click on the link, that's how sick those videos make me.

I lived through high school during the John Hughes era safe in suburbia and I didn't have people beating the shit outta me and it was hard enough. But it's like this is another planet. I can't imagine being an teenager in JC these days. I would live in perpetual fear.

it really wasnt that bad. just your normal streetfight... like someone said, there are hundreds on youtube of white, black, hispanic, urban, suburban, pretty much anyone whos a kid being involved in one of these fights. it started off pretty much the same way all the videos do. huge crowd around 2 people fighting. people egging them on. some people trying to stop, and other people preventing those from stopping the fight. eventually more people get involved, and then it breaks up. big whoop.

a few of my college friends went to dickinson for high school. it was no walk in the park, but it isn't jurassic park either. if you stay out of peoples way, for the most part they stay out of yours. sure theres fights and such, but if you dont go out looking for trouble, you can mostly avoid it.

most of your posts in this thread so far were ok... until you got to the point where you compared a shield protecting against a shotgun blast through a door vs a knife.

yes tasers might be against the law in NJ which is why they should reverse that law and allow both civilians and police (or at the very least police) to carry them. without this, the officers really can't be blamed for their actions, especially if they already attempted to baton/mace the suspect to no avail.

Why are people even debating this?

not debated: jcpd's response to being attacked
being debated: why jcpd officers are not equipped with other ways to subdue mentally ill suspects (tranquilizer darts, stun guns, etc.)

I wish death on NO ONE - however - HOWEVER - if you go after somebody else - EVERY SINGLE PERSON has a RIGHT TO DEFEND THEMSELVES. If they're mentally ill, so be it. If they're sane and made a mistake, so be it as well.

If you had your way, we would all sit by and let people violate us and then ask questions later. You revolt me.

saab - youre missing the point. if someone attacks you, an ordinary citizen, in the middle of the street, you have every right to defend yourself. if it turns out this person that attacked you was mentally ill, and you didnt know about it, then you cant be blamed for that

however , it sounds like these officers knew (or should have known) that the suspect was mentally ill. whether they knew or didnt know isnt clear to me. but if they knew they were dealing with a potentially crazy person, their intentions should be to control the situation by immobilizing the suspect (i.e using a tazer or tranquilizer darts) rather than lethal force.

i think someone posted on this thread that jcpd does not carry tasers with them.. so i cant fault the officers for firing on the lady (especially if they tried pepper spraying her or baton already). however, if they would make tranquilizer darts or tazers a standard issue to every cop - or at least 1 per cop car - it might avoid unfortunate situations like this

It seems English is not your first language. That's fine.

But, it makes me wonder why you use the term "Mongol."

Are you Chinese or Korean? Does"Mongol" represent some fierce, walled-off outside attacker?

It's not a word I hear being used alot. But, the word Mongoloid is an out-of-date for people who are East Asian, or an offensive term for people with mental handicaps such as Downs' Syndrome. Neither group fills Montgomery Gardens.

So, what were you driving at?

the more curious part is that people actually agreed with the comment, and thought it was appropriate.

the other route is: JSQ all the way up JFK blvd and up to 32nd street in union city, then it turns right and goes into NYC (stops at 42nd street port authority).

there are also other routes that go all the way up to north bergen, but i think those come on palisade... not sure. if youre going into nyc, i believe the fare is $2 and change. they are posted on the inside walls when you walk into the vans

Madam, have you ever left the ?safe haven? of downtown to explore the rest of the city? I live in an area you would like to see cut off from yours. My street is tree-lined with a newly paved road; all of the rowhouses are maintained beautifully and historically with flowers and plants in the front. There are no bars on the windows and doors nor is there graffiti or people loitering. Rarely is there loud music. The neighbors are wonderful. They earn their livings as doctors, lawyers, artists, small business owners, librarians, teachers and public servants.

I am an owner and taxpayer with no criminal record. I work in New York City for a well-known company. I am a registered voter and vote. I attend council meetings. I am involved in my neighborhood as well as the Jersey City community at large. I volunteer my time to the local TNR initiative. I have a daughter who attends private school in New York State who will one day become yet another asset to Jersey City residing the area you find so distasteful. I also spend a great deal of money downtown and would be happy to take my business to New York City should you not want me on your sacred ground.

Please get off your high horse as you really have no idea that the number of worthwhile caring citizens residing in ?that other part? of this city truly outnumber those you are having issues with.

According to Gnome General:
Quote:
.....If they could build a wall between downtown and everything beyond the turnpike it would be grand. When a neighborhood has garbage, graffiti, no trees, loud music, people loitering on every stoop and homes that have metal gates on their front windows - you cannot deny that aesthetically it translates that this hood is bad. Go call a waaambulance.

Thanks for the accolades. However, I'm not talking about the rare "Bentley Ave" amid the ruins. There are exceptions to every hood, class of people...etc. I would also like to highlight the fact that you all flock to a webside dedicated to downtown for a reason. You all resemble us downtowners more, otherwise you wouldn't even be online. Where's the greenville JClist?

you know, there is another forum that people post on. i seem to remember that it's taboo to post the link or even speak of it.. so i may have said too much.

i think youve got it backwards chief, dont you mean you downtowners resemble us people in the nice neighborhoods? after all, our neighborhoods were nice way before downtown was nice

(obviously tongue in cheek... the point is that your whole premise of people wanting to be like the ideal DTJC is pretentious. but if that helps you sleep at night...all the more power to ya)

you lost her after this part. it's a lost cause for most of these posters. i think the problem is their distorted view of what jersey city and downtown are. to them, downtown means specifically their neighborhood. now if you live in newport or paulus hook - then of course, youd be proud to call downtown your own. but to suggest that anything near the turnpike (even if it's on the correct side) is 'downtown' is preposterous.. that CANT be downtown. only the good stuff is downtown, and everything that isn't downtown is bad.

well you know what? there are bad areas of downtown too, whether you like it or not (wayne and barrow? most of newark ave at night?) if you want to stay on your high horse, then talk about your individual neighborhood. im sure it's very nice. but just as you have nice neighborhoods in downtown, other portions of the city have nice parts in theirs (heights - western slope; greenville - country village; bergen lafayette, etc.).

if you lived in any of these places, youd find relatively little crime, good transportation and a high quality of life. yet, you'd be hard pressed to find any of the residents of these areas screaming for a wall to isolate the rest of the (heights/bergen/greenville) from their neighborhood. why do you think that is?

instead of clamoring for safer streets because you pay more, take some time to realize that there are other sections of jc as well, and we're all committed to seeing the city improve.

Sorry. Everyone has a right to complain. It's enshrined in the First Amendment. Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances. Bergen Hill, Lafayette, Greenville, The Heights... they have bigger problems and should be more vocal politically, demand more from the City, expect more from their community, and do more for themselves. But, that's quite a challenge. Unfortunately, they may speak, vote, expect, and do less as a result.
the first amendment describes rights that the federal government cannot take away from the people. it doesnt give everyone the right to do these things. if it were against the constitution, why would the webmaster be able to delete whatever posts he wants without going to jail?

jitneys are used on these forums to describe the dangerous, broken-down, falling-apart buses that run primarily on JFK and palisade. it may not have a negative connotation in general usage, but the posters who used it in this thread knew what the implication was and thats why they used it.

OTOH, the jitneys are my favorite mode of public transportation, both here in jc (fast and come very often on JFK) as well as atlantic city (beats having to drive everywhere... just hop on the jitney and youre there). i dont think a jitney should have a negative connotation, but the point remains that it does.
