Besides presiding over a municipal bureaucracy that is periodically in the news for all the wrong reasons, and besides periodically conducting himself in ways that are an ongoing embarassment to Jersey City, Jerramiah T. Healy has arguably done more damage to the arts community in Jersey City than any other mayor ?ever. He and his cronies should be held accountable at least for that.
Goldmans lawyer was able to file a 100 mil lawsuite against the city because one of the voters for historic designation had an expired term, so the ordinance was passed with a vote that did not count. a judge gave the city the oppertunity to re-enstate the voter and re-vote for historic designation, which would have eliminated the 100 mil lawsuite. ----WHY DIDNT HE DO THIS?------- After Healy decided he was not going to stop the demolition of 111, he allowed the demo crew to continue EMERGENCY DEMOLITION of interior studios knowing it was full of Asbestos. He allowed the continued harassment of the art community from the demo crew and the JCPD. I had my studio broken into by the demo crew, and they didnt come in the front door. They BUSTED DOWN THE WALLS and used shoprite carts to steel my belongings. My neighbor came out to say WHAT ARE YOU DOING? THIS IS MY NEIGHBOR!!! AND THIS IS HIS STUFF!!! The cop pointed his finger to his face and said one more word out of you and you will be arrested. I couldnt beleive this was hapening. I asked the guys to please stop takeing my stuff. They took things my father gave me before he died that i will never get back. Now a group of 4 or 5 more goons with sticks (hired by the demo contractor), Building management, 3 or 4 more cops, and members of the 111 tenants association were gathered in the hall. we talked them into letting me remove the rest of my stuff before they continued demo. I asked for my other belongings back and they said WHAT STUFF!!---WE DIDNT TAKE ANYTHING! I was told if i didnt like it file a police report. so i turned to the police officers and said i would like to file a report, and they said go to 7 street station, so i did and they said you have to talk to the officers at the 111 building. After hearing that i knew i was FUKCED. These cops were not on my side. I spent the rest of the night paceing the floor, my eyes watering with frustration , my hands locked in a fist. It is a feeling i will never forget.

s6k Media. Are you able to show the Japanese video
mentioned in this interview? is it in english? It would be interesting to see this , or any other info you may have on the 111 1st street subject. Thanx Also Why does everyone, including the press consider this to be OLD NEWS when it was never in the news until 2 years later. sounds fishy to me.

\"Either we move the substation and save the Powerhouse, or we leave the substation and lose the Powerhouse,\" Antonicello said. \"Every day that the Powerhouse sits vacant and is open to the elements, we lose a little bit more of the building.\"
Here we go again! If developers are able to squeeze the city into demolishing the powerhouse, then the entire historic preservation leg of the biulding department should be eliminated along with it. Its a waste of taxpayer money. Why are home owners in vv park ,hamilton park, paulus hook expected to follow the rules when the developers dont have to. Does anyone know or wonder why the powerhouse is SLOWLY being picked apart, such as windows being removed to expose the structure to the elements. this is what happened to 110 first st. Remove the windows cut a few holes in the roof and let mother nature do the rest. It seems that if this administration was concerned AT ALL! about preserving this landmark they would be boarding it up to preserve the structure and protect it from the elements. This is not happening for a reason and should be considered as NEGLECTING TO PRESERVE THIS STRUCTURE!

There is always more than one side to a story.
I think its important for newcomers to this city to know the TRUTH about the art community and what this administration did (or didnt do) to eliminate the art center. one things for sure the artist would never been able to continue this fight without the full support of the city which we had until healy was elected. he voted YES for Powerhouse Arts district, and YES for Historic designation, and as soon as he became mayor, HE TURNED HIS BACK TO US. The city held our hands to the edge of the cliff, and our new mayor ran up from behind and PUSHED US OVER. There was WAY MORE CORRUPTION that went on here besides the cops drinking. For those of you who would like to know the TRUTH please go to www.111first.com and decide for yourself.

I just read over the last day the issue with 111 and I am beginning to see things a bit more clearly. There is obviously a lot of overlap and connections between developers, politicians, police force, judges and private security. Looks like if one starts pulling the thread of this drunk cop video a whole lot is going to unravel. (freedom) Mathias you are right! There is a word for this, its called ORGANISED CRIME!!

[quote from alb)
The drunken officers might not have been drunk, and they didn\'t (as far as we know) shoot and kill any of the 111 artists. But, if they were drunk, they could have easily ended up shooting an artist, or a passerby, or someone\'s little kid. I\'m not that troubled by the idea that there has to be a statute of limitations on this sort of thing, but this is a kind of a big deal. (quote from 111 first Street art center website) Jersey City Police officers now patrol the arts center in full uniform, with badges and side-arms, as a private security force on Goldman\'s payroll. They have entered private studios and ejected members of the press from the building, enforcing the policies of BLDG Management Co. rather than the law. (freedom) These same cops in the video and others looked the other way while we had our car windows smashed, and our studios ROBBED!! by the demolition workers. It should be ILLEGAL for a rich building owner to hire our JC cops to enforce his laws on JC citizens. thats one reason why this administration and the press is avoiding the fact that these cops were working at 111, because they dont want a law that would stop this kind of activity. Im sure there are other reasons, like TONS of OT for the cops not paid out by the city. SHAME!

Did anyone notice the jj article posted on this thread is different than what accually got printed in the jj ?
Why did they edit out the part about the guy walking up to the black suv and handing the cop a peice of paper ? For those of you who don\'t know, this man ( Louis ) worked for building management at 111 1st st. The paper he handed the cop is a permission slip for a tenant at 111 to use the elevator. Why does the fact that these cops were working at 111 get GLOSSED OVER ? This important detail is one of the reasons why it never made it to the press before, and there must be a reason why this fact is still being avoided today. s6k Media, can you shed any light on this ?

QUOTE,
Comey said five of the officers were working off-duty security jobs for Interstate Construction on Bay Street between Greene and Warren streets. A sixth officer who was on-duty saw what was happening and although he did not participate, he was disciplined for not taking the matter to his superiors, Comey said. Police would not identify the officers. Just curious. Green st and Warren? the only thing on Bay st between Warren st and the river at that time was 111 1st st, the Morgan building and the Powerhouse. was Interstate construction another name for the demolition contractor working for LLoyd Goldman. I do not recall any construction, only demolition of the smoke stack and artist studios which were being loaded by bulldozers into dumpsters on Bay st. In the video you see a man walk up to a suv with a doccument, his name is Louis and he worked for building management at 111. During the lockdown we the artist cuould not enter or leave the building without signing in and out. to use the loading dock and elevator we had to sign a permission form and have it ok\'d by the police and Louis would open the lock. Were these cops NOT working at 111.? This is a important detail because this was one of the reasons it was kept out of the press. Also the one cop that didnt drink and was on duty got into the suv and left with the drunk off duty guys WTF. is that not participation? I believe there is more truth to come on this story.

Hey Pink! just curious, how did you find out the cops were disciplined? just so ya know i was a tenant at 111. I know the auther of this video. this happened just after Healy became mayor. Healy was shown this video and as far as i know nothing was done or we (the tennants of 111) would of heard about it for sure. again the reason this never got to press was because the auther of the video and the tennants feared for our lives NO JOKE!!!!! The demo crew wanted us dead. Just thinking about how wrong everything was is pissing me off all over again. Mabey its time to take the original full length video to the press.

Well I must say as far as I'm concerned healey does not have a good track record of discipline for cops that drink
ON DUTY!!! let alone off duty. Case in point, for those of you who remember the lockdown of 111 1st st. A video tape was made of a group of police officers at the corner of warren and 1st getting SHIT FACED DRUNK!!! in broad daylight, with guns and full uniform on. The video clearly shows the officers passing around a BIG! bottle of booze as they hang on each other laughing and havin a good ol time. At one point one officer stumbles away from the group and takes a piss in the street. The video ends with the cops setting the empty bottle down and DRIVING AWAY!! This video was taken directly to Mayor Healey to show that the J.C.P.D. (who were being paid by LLOYD GOLDMAN) was not helping the situation. Mayor Healeys respons was \"well, i guess we got a problem over there\" we could tell by the response the only problem was the whole thing was on tape. But nothing was done, the same cops were back at work, business as usual. lets face it, they all look out for each other in every way, And even if youre caught, your not, unless someone presses charges. IF THAT WERE YOU AND I!!??? AND NO THIS WAS NOT COVERED IN ANY PAPER OR TV!!

Accually they were working for LLoyd Goldman, owner
of 111 1st st. They were not there to direct traffic but were hired for 24 hr watch over the artist and building. Funny how the building had more crime in the last 90 days we were there than in the entire 16 years i was in the building. The cops were paid to look the other way.

The 111 1st street settlement
|
||||
---|---|---|---|---|
Just can't stay away
|
A deal worked out by the Healy Administration and billionaire owner Lloyd Goldman contained the following: the creation of a special "residential zone" within the so-called Powerhouse Arts District, using spot zoning (a type of zoning that Mr. Goldman lamented in one of his lawsuits against the City). It will now entitle him to build whatever he wants on the 110 and 111 sites. The Healy administration rescinded (or gave up on trying to enforce) the 78 million dollars in fines that had accumulated on the 111 property presumably in exchange for Mr. Goldman dropping his 100 million dollar paper lawsuit. Mr. Goldman also paid the City the sum of 1.2 million dollars as a sop earmarked for the Jersey City Museum and the Loew's Theater.
World-renowned Dutch architect Rem Koolhaus recently made public his design for the 111 site. My initial reaction was that it's a welcome change from the uninspired corporate detritus now littering the downtown landscape. However, upon reflection it's 2nd rate Koolhaus. The design does not live up to the inspired architecture Mr. Koolhaus is noted for - especially his design for the Seattle Library, a masterpiece of contemporary architecture. I urge Mr. Koolhaus to go back to the drawing board and give it another go. Recently, Mayor Healy presented a check for $330,000 in settlement money to the Jersey City Museum. While both the Museum and the Loew's Theater are worthy entities deserving of funding, accepting money from a source that evicted and brutalized the artist's community at 111 is tantamount to accepting Blood Money. It reminds me of an incident in the aftermath of 9/11 when an Arab prince gave Mayor Giuliani a check for 10 million dollars. A deluge of criticism erupted for accepting this kind of money from that kind of source. Mayor Giuliani returned the check. Memo to the Museum and the Loew's: what are you waiting for? Mindful of "sour grapes", I can't help but think of what could have been. The 111 Artists Community had plans for the building that would have preserved it as affordable live/work studios with community outreach programs like guest artists-in-residence and art classes for local children and adults. We and our professional advisers were fully aware of the monetary and human costs involved in such a huge undertaking. We worked furiously to try to make it happen while fighting eviction daily, but were undermined when the Healy Administration turned its back on us. Doomed, we were eventually evicted, our hopes and plans demolished. The City, and especially this administration, needs to ask itself if development promulgated in such a manner is truly healthy, with its primary goal of enriching the few. Untrammeled development driven by "Narcissistic Capitalism" will ultimately erode a city rather than enrich it. Development is "food" and should nurture accordingly. You are what you build. NO, Mayor Smith would have done something about this, as
he proved by showing up at 111 1st st at 11;30 at night in his sweat pants to assist us, and more than once because he CARED. this video was given to Mayor Healey after he took office, and this was the beginning of the END of the POWERHOUSE ARTS DISTRICT and HISTORIC DESIGNATION for this entire district. Because LLoyd Goldman PAYED THEM ALL!!! Cops , Construction officials , The Mayor well dont get me started, maby this should go in the PAY TO PLAY thread cus thats exactly what happened.
