The Light Horse could probably do it -- they have the second floor balcony and also the back room.

Here's an article that summarizes the law: http://www.nj.com/news/index.ssf/2010 ... ie_signs_bill_allowi.html

It says the district you want to switch to must be below capacity. I'm not sure if JC is.

This law seems kind of strange, and I'm surprised I never heard of it until now. Property taxes are such a big issue here, and schools are a large part of those taxes, you'd think there would have been more of an uproar.

Re: 5-year old girl mauled by unleashed pit bull -- did not respond to owner's commands

It is terrible that this little girl was attacked, and I hope she heals quickly, both emotionally and physically.

Banning specific breeds is not an answer to dog bites. This very unfortunate incident happened because the owner could not control his dog. I've seen people with out of control golden retrievers, basset hounds and even chihuahuas. I know someone who suffered a bad bite on the leg from a Jack Russell terrier who escaped from the person walking it -- nearly the same situation as presented here.

On the contrary, I think de-stigmatizing the breed as a "tough guy" dog is the way to go. Pit Bulls, like Jack Russells or goldens, can be and are great family dogs. They are loving animals, but like any dog require a huge commitment in terms of obedience training. NOT training for fighting, "protecting", or training that encourages aggression, which is what sadly often occurs with these dogs.

Finally, a note on the actual application of a breed ban. How would you enforce such a thing? Most of the dogs people label as pit bulls that I see walking around town are not pure bred pits. (Go to a dog show and see a pure bred pit, and you'll see what I mean.) So, what are we talking about? What would constitute a pit bull? Most of these dogs don't have any kind of papers saying what they are, and most are a mix of rottie, staffordshire, shepherd and dozens of other breeds. (And don't say DNA testing, because they are ineffective at determining breeds). Would you ban any dog with a wide jaw? Well, then you would have to include American and French bulldogs, Boston terriers, rotties, pugs...the list goes on.

Demanding a breed ban is a knee jerk reaction to a terrible story like this. I understand the sentiment, but legislation needs to be a thought out, viable and pertinent-to-the-facts action, not an emotional response.

I've been there a few times, and they are super nice. So nice that I hate to say anything negative about the place. The food however, leaves a lot to be desired.

The menu is so. boring. and the nature of the selection leads me to believe that much of it is frozen. (Breaded chicken tenders, etc). I hate to say it, but the menu reads like the one at my college cafeteria.

The great thing about the old Simple was that they had comfort food -- things like meatloaf and chicken pot pie. These are so easy to make, and helped Simple stand out from the crowd (not that they didn't have their own problems). I wish 9th and Coles would go in this direction. Find something cool to do -- a variety of delicious grilled cheese sandwiches, or homemade pickles. Something that makes the place unique.

Fresh, simple, hearty food is surprisingly hard to find, and I think if they offered it patrons would flock there. I know I would.

Agreed. What a dumb idea, especially at rush hour.
How many retirees do you see on the PATH at 9 am, anyway?

In related news, why did they also close down half the street and crosswalks to do that fake bricks thing? That seems more like an 11am project.

I think the cheapest I've seen is Joy Nails, at $8 or $9...plus they throw in a short shoulder massage.

Zion is similar, maybe $1 or so more, and seems cleaner. They're nice at both places.

Would you feel comfortable with a cat sitter? Staying at home is always least stressful for cats. Mark Blanchard, aka The Cat Man, is a very devoted caretaker. I bet he has experience with administering IV fluids.

He doesn't have a website, but I will PM you his email address.

If not, Secaucus Animal Hospital is great. I've never boarded a pet there, but the staff is very warm, take great care of everyone.

I believe the space was occupied by a thrift store, which sometimes used the parking lot for display larger furniture. They have been out of business for several months. Viaquenti is the preschool across the street, were you thinking of that?

Not sure about alcohol in the picnic area. You don't want to repeat this: http://jclist.com/modules/newbb/viewt ... t&topic_id=19408&forum=10

That said, there must be some parts of the park where it's allowed (Liberty House, etc). Good luck with your party.

There's this on their website: http://www.jciaonline.org/recsteps.php

but it doesn't really answer your question because it is pretty vague. For instance it mentions "food containers", but in NYC many of those are not recyclable (like yogurt containers).

Re: Help--- what to do about feral cats??
Home away from home
Home away from home

Okay, I think we are partially talking about two different things.

You are right, domestic house cats that have lived with people absolutely do not belong on the street. These cats need to be picked up and found homes for. These cats are not feral and do not belong in colonies.

Obviously I do not support those who dump pets in the street.

A truly feral cat was born and grew up away from humans. They are not suitable pets.

The fact that cats are hunters and sometimes hunt birds is very unfortunate. I also love birds, and would never allow my cat outdoors for that (and many other) reasons.

While there is debate about what the proper way to deal with ferals is, the ASPCA advocates TNR as the best, most humane way. I encourage anyone who wants to learn more to do their own research and make their own decision.

As I said, there is not a perfect solution. This is the way I choose to deal with it. I think we will have to agree to disagree here.

Re: Help--- what to do about feral cats??

Can you back your assertions up with facts? And, um, mayhem? Really?

TNR (Trap - Neuter - Release) is the only humane way I know of to deal with feral cats. After being neutered and vaccinated, the cats are healthier, roam less and fight rarely. The goal with TNR is to take adoptable kittens off the street and find homes. The adult cats are often too wild to make good pets, (especially when you consider that shelters are full of wonderful cats already) so if the situation is safe, they remain where they are and are cared for. Is it a perfect solution? Of course not. If you know of another humane solution (i.e. not euthanizing every feral) I would truly like to hear about it.

The Neighborhood Feral Cat initiative is a program in JC that can help: http://www.neighborhoodferalcat.org/

You can receive training on performing TNR, and info about low cost spay neuter programs.

Good luck, and thanks for doing the right thing!

Salon for inexpensive blow out?

Can anyone recommend a salon downtown for an inexpensive but decent blow out? Ideally I'd like to pay around $20, but I don't know if that's realistic. I'd also be interested in cheap but good places for an updo. Thanks!

Try Hudson Art Supply. They have inexpensive, simple frames.

Also places like Marshall's and TJ Maxx are good , but you won't find 50 all the same, if that's what you're going for.

It seems like the JCPD has a pretty lax attitude when it comes to these sort of things. I live on Newark ave and have the lovely couple who are drunk and pushing a shopping cart up and down the block 24/7. They literally beat the crap out of each other in front of my door and sometimes just sit there and block it so I have to physically push the door into them to get out. I see them constantly throwing things at each other, which could most definitely hit passersby or vehicle traffic. Have called the JCPD on several occasions and have been told every time that they're "aware of the situation" but essentially will do nothing unless they're actively beating each other and throwing crap right there in front of them. My favorite line was "They only seem to exhibit violence against each other, so you shouldn't worry".

Not to go too far OT, but that was pretty much the reaction I got from the JCPD when I called about two guys beating the crap out of a third guy. The police misunderstood the call, and thought I said that I had been beaten up. Anyway, they showed up a few hours later at my door, and when I explained what actually happened, they shrugged and said "Well, we haven't heard anything from the victim," and left.

Re: Hamilton Park Area
Home away from home
Home away from home

I lived on 7th and Jersey for three years. It was a really nice neighborhood. It was quiet at night, but not desolate, and very close to the park. It's a friendly neighborhood, with a nice mix of people. You don't have as many options for retail/restaurants as VVP, but that has changed a lot since I lived there, and will hopefully continue to.

It's really personal preference regarding which path stop to use. I usually went to newport, because the three minutes on the train between newport and grove felt like an eternity for some reason. I am a woman, and I walked home late at night several times and never had a problem. There is the police station on 8th St (I think?) that I would walk by if I was concerned. Or I would take a cab from Grove St.

New business on Newark Ave/old 9 Lives space

I was walking by the old Nine Lives space today and saw that there is a new business going in. I spoke with the owner, who was there working on it, and she said its going to be an arts/crafts place. She thinks they will open in mid-August.

I'm not sure if its a supply store, or a gallery type place that sells people's work, but either way this will be a great addition to the area. I wish her the best.

Granted. But, something tells me the Healys didn't have to jump through the hoops all other businesses have to. I bet their opening date hasn't been delayed numerous times (like Barcade, for instance) because of city red tape. Most small businesses can't survive months of delays and rebuilds. I walked by Healy's a month or two ago and the inside was nowhere near complete. I am surprised how quickly they are opening.
