Re: One of Jersey City oldest houses -- Circa 1840 -- was illegally destroyed

What is the drama?

The city issues a stop work order, Sacks realty ignores the order and demolishes the building.

The city should fine the company, its directors and even the demolition crew (this should make people more accountable and follow procedures - no demolition guy will take the risk if the green light is only given by the builders) with whatever the penalty is.

The city then (as part of the penalty) allows Sacks realty to clean up the site, but enforce an order that no construction is allowed for 12 months.

This will be financially straining to Sacks realty.

Once the building was demolished its too late, but the penalty for the breach should hurt the hip pocket.

Do we know what the infringement / penalty is, or is it 'cost-effective' to ignore city orders?

It sounds like the city council is a bull dog with no teeth, if it can't work out what to do with this issue.

Maybe they need a simple flow chart that helps them make a decision?

PS: Doesn't the City have Building Inspectors to enforce stop work orders and the like?

Re: Downtown Jersey City Watch-Updates Thread

Just can't stay away

I'm basically new to my area of JC and I don't own a vehicle, so I do a lot of walking with my son around the neighborhood.
Each time we go for a walk (30 min walk) we find at least 10+ cars with either open windows where a hand could fit through or an unlocked door (but closed).

As an idea - When the neighborhood watch group go around on their patrol, they could look out for similar vehicles and vehicles that have left their headlights on or even vehicles that have had their steering column locks punched.
(likely a stolen vehicle).
If you are really keen, look at the tires to see if there is a lot of dirt or dust around them that might indicate they haven't moved in a long time and could be stolen or abandon then call the Police to check.

These activities should be part of JCPA duties.

If you know your area well, you might know who owns the vehicle and let them know.
If you don't, inform the JCPD via a phone call that you would like to secure the vehicle by telling them of your location and registration number of the vehicle and you intend to open the door so as to lock it. (this phone call will let Police know you are not a thief if people call to say that there is a group hanging around a vehicle)

I would even leave a calling card under the wiper or inside the vehicle on the dash to say they had left their car open and the neighborhood watch group secured it for you. This would be great for PR and recruitment.

Not wanting to condone acts of vandalism, but some time ago in Melbourne Australia, the City Council erected a 'monument' at great cost in the city square to a lot of peoples disapproval.
The 'monument' was hit by graffiti and eggs so often that the maintenance costs got out of hand and it was removed.
It now sits out of public view and kids use it to skateboard on.

On another note, when I look at the proposed memorial / monument for the 9-11 tragic event then look at the memorial for the Korean War Veterans where is the parity?

If contracts haven't been signed to erected the memorial, who is moving all the dirt and who is paying? It really sounds like the 'horse has bolted' and it could be too late!

Not wanting to put a dampener on this issue, but you will still need a barrier next to the memorial.

The glaring problem here is that the memorial is in the middle of the road and there are 2 seating benches mounted into the road. I don't think we would like neither to be hit by a car attempting a U-turn.

Litigation seems to go with everything 'U.S' - what happens if someone does hurt themself on or around the memorial? What if a child climbs it and cracks their head if they fall?
I hope JC has paid their insurance to cover public liability?

I thought this could be an issue, considering the amount of advertising you see on T.V and newspapers from Law firms offering their service to victims of accidents on public or private spaces.

Re: motorcycle parking

Since the authorities consider this a 'grey' area, common sense should apply.

My tip is so long as the motorbike isn't a Harley but a Vespa or scooter, parking on the footpath should be ok.

Just kerb it for 2 reasons:

1. Allow enough room for strollers and wheel chairs to pass.
2. Blind people use the building line with their white cane to get around. (nothing worse then a blind person falling over the bike.)

Also when parked against the kerb, leave enough room from the kerb so motorists don't knock it when they open their doors.

These tips are geared for safe passage for everyone and to protect your investment.

If it is deemed illegal to park on the footpath and you get a ticket - don't call me, I'll call you!

curb = kerb (not sure which one is used in the U.S.)

What 8 million from the state and all you have to do is be transparent and accountable on how this money is to be spent?

Hard decision for some politicians - with words like: transparent / accountable / justify / approval board

I don't think JC's reputation could get any worse if this 'charity money' was accepted.

Do we all agree that we live in a world where the main goal of a terrorist is to inflict casaulties more so against the civilian population, regardless where on this planet we live?

Hopefully we will never experience a repeat of 9-11, but we did have a scare with the Holland Tunnel just a month ago.

If the terrorists are successful, are we then going to build another memorial for that tragic event.
Will it (the memorial) be bigger and how many lives will it take to qualify for a memorial to be built?

War memorials should not be confused with my point of view, but we should look to have a significant memorial only where the incident took place and financially supporting it.

I've come across a woman from time to time in the neighborhood that is arrogant and rude, but doesn't have the aptitude to order a beer at a bar. (if you know what I mean)
She also shares the same name as this Sonia person that everyone is fond of!

Does anyone know what Sonia looks like ? - their personality and mind set is very similar.

Not wanting to be rude or disrespectful but the patronage to the Korean War Memorial isn't huge. I would guess that there are a number of memorials that don't get much patronage neither. (except on memorial day or a day that is significant to the memorial)

'Park' = an area of land set aside for public use, as for recreation.

Downtown Manhattan is where the disaster occurred and is where people will expect to see a memorial to reflect.

As this was not a military disaster I believe a NJ memorial should be at a NJ cemetery with a donation given to the authorities in NY with their memorial on behave of the NJ people.

1200 more jobs with 1200 more middle class residents with their incomes in JC - it is great for business and development but BAD for current residents and their rental costs.
Housing will be supply and demand and everyone is looking for the best cost-effective housing option.
If I was a student, artist or average income earner I would not be so happy.

If I was a landlord, I would be looking to renovate my building to increase the rent. (I guess you have about 2 years before things start happening) If your landlord is starting to make improvements around your place - cross your fingers.

Deutsche Bank and equal opportunities for women does not compute!

Did we not read that Deutsche Bank was forced to make a massive workers compensation payout for harassment and other issues to a female employee. It also appears that they have little regard for their female staff (more lawsuits from females to follow) - just look and see how many senior female managers they have!

Their management style is very much still lost in the 60's and work place bulling rules.

Corporate Psychopaths exist in most, if not all large corporations. Yes, this term is real look it up!

I have always thought a PARK is a fun place for children to play and families to enjoy like riding a bike, a bbq or flying a kite.

I can hear the cries from people now when a child kicks a ball that goes near the memorial.

The tragic event occurred in NY and thats where the memorial of any significance should be - donate some of the funds to their memorial.

Why not have a MODEST memorial where we put most of our deceased by natural causes or conflict - A CEMETERY, and while we are their, visit the grave site of family that have passed - when was the last time people did that! (I don't see a queue there!)

Yes brewster, this is all true and people have been making money off disasters and horrific events since the dawn of time.
One would hope that as man gets older and wiser he would have developed better moral values.

The way things are going, I expect to see in the future people marketing the remains of a tragic school bus wreck, whereby one can purchase pieces of the bus.

I'm still surprised that the devastation after hurricane Katrina isn't marketed better for someone to make some money - its interesting how people can pick and chose what they can make money from and what people will chose to spend money on.

I'm on no high horse, just pointing out how parts of society behaves and that a plastic souvenir made in China that commemorates a tragic incident doesn't do it for me.
It would be better if a day was highlighted every year where people could attend a church, mosque, synagogue or even a bar to reflect on an incident.

I much prefer the minute silence that we do on the 11th month of the 11th day on the 11th hour - much more powerful with flags lowered and (most) traffic coming to a stop.

Point taken, It must be a western thing - the Brits are guilty with Princess Dianna - The people who make all the money off disasters should be forced to pay higher taxes or go to church everyday for a year to seek forgiveness.

I've seen it all now 9-11 coins, vehicle stickers and magnets, posters and t-shirts just to name a few things connected to this terrorist act.

The 9-11 attack has turned into a money making industry and I feel this memorial is going to feed that industry.

Only in America, what a shame!

What about a memorial for the troops that have died in Afghanistan and Iraqi - and are still being killed today?
What about a memorial for the troops that died in Dessert Storm.
I understand that this is close to home, but isn't there a memorial for 9/11 located between the ferry terminal and Exchange Place (PATH) already or is Cityhall more interested in making the proposed memorial a tourist attraction?

It's a 'touchy subject' but JC could spend the money on its infrastructure and social issues - hang on, where is the money coming from - if someone is giving it to Cityhall as a donation then build the thing, but I heard JC was close to being pennyless.

Re: Mapping Crime in Ward E - Steven Fulop

If I was 'one of nine council people' I would demand Police Statistic reports - who are the Police accountable to, if not the elected representatives of the community?

I would expect a copy of the Police Statistics monthly, even if it wasn't part of my portfolio as a council person, then discuss ways of helping the council person with that portfolio and Police Chief on proactive ways to address the concerns or needs of the community regardless of what 'ward' I represent.

I would have thought it was in everyone's interest (elected council representatives) to look at crime and its social impact on the community?

Maybe we should have a close look on the job description and Key Performance Indicators (KPI's) that a Police Chief is required to be assessed on - They shouldn't have an option on whether they need to produce statistics or not.

As any public servant that generates an income from taxes, transparency should be a 'mission statement'.

4. Less people traffic then NYC

5. The Liberty Harbor Marina and Liberty Park - the view and open space
6. Bike riding to Hoboken from Paulus Hook along the Hudson River

8. Watching progress being made as buildings slowly grow.

9. Easy commute on the ferries

10. Walking through downtown JC and feeling like it's the 60's (all the stores could do with a face lift)

Re: NWA Hypocrit

As for residential parking on PUBLIC ROADS I think is stupid, if your building has private parking then pay up and us it.
It is part of owning a car that includes insurance and maintenance.

Some of these residential buildings house 100's of people and any business in the area wouldn't have any parking for their patrons.

If the logic of residential parking on public roads is agreed, then the highrise business buildings could say the same and demand parking on the street for their 1000+ staff during working hours.
I bet they (businesses) pay higher taxes then any resident.

I think parking on PUBLIC ROADS should be time / meter restricted and a 'free for all' after 6pm.

As for the play area for children near the Korean War Memorial - what a great idea.
I live near by and it's a safe area for kids to play and learn to ride a bike.
I think a childs safety and enjoyment override any small area for cars - I think the people that fought would be sad to see an area like this converted for parking especially it being a dead end street!

Make parents or guardians accountable for their childrens actions when they commit offences.

I feel you can't expect society and the government to always have solutions for bad parenting.

You bring them into this world - your responsible for them in this world until they are legally called and adult.

Reality hurts

I've just read that they expect a population of 20 million in NYC within 5 years at the moment it is at 18 million.

As I see it NYC is full and the next place to fill is JC - it's close and a 8min ferry commute to Downtown NYC.

It appears that most of the highrise apartments are full and a lot more is in damand in JC.

It appears without much question that in time a family / artist / student will need to generate 100 thousand to live here in JC.

Progress and population growth is going to force this issue with the help of developers and Government - the more people in, the more taxes for JC and the higher the apartment building on the smallest amount of land to more profits for all.

Unfortunately the only artists that will survive will be the successful ones with the others fighting to struggle and exist just to make rental payments.

After travelling and living in a number of countries, this is happening in most major cities - JC is just to close to NYC for this not to happen - the developers would not invest millions if the need and profits were not here and they are here.
There would also be other developers just waiting and seeing what happens before they commit.

But smile this is all just speculation!

As mentioned on the net by another party:
STATEMENT OF JERSEY CITY MAYOR JERRAMIAH HEALY

?Without cause or provocation?

?While immobilized by several police officers?

THESE ARE MAY FAVORITE LINES ? How can someone just standing there require SEVERAL police officers to subdue them unless your kicking and fighting and the officer to then finally have to use mace?

The police prosecutor will love this statement when it gets to court ? that?s if the statement was ever made.

Still feel for the arresting officer, when the political machine makes the Mayor as innocent as an alter boy at church ? by the way, is it common or a regular habit for the Mayor to play the Good Samaritan or batman?

I just hope the Mayor doesn?t have a habit of story telling or not being a man of his word that could show history of his behavior traits.

But then again this incident or statement might have never happened or made!

To discourage gang activity

1. Insert fingers in ears
2. Close your eyes
3. Bite your tongue
4. Pray they move to another neighborhood

Mission Accomplished!

It amazes me how many people have that response.

The other one is - So long as it doesn't affect me directly, I'm
Ok.

I guess now we know why 'gangs' own the streets when they are present.
I'm sure you are not alone with this issue you have, but no-one is as community conscious as you - GOOD LUCK.

Mayor Arrested then released then apology from Police.

It all smells fishy and JC has serious crime and enforcement issues - maybe we are not alone!

If JC Council was run like a private enterprise most would be sacked and others would be made more accountable.

I hope this doesn't tarnish the police if this is all true, but arresting someone isn't done on a whim and I've never known a person arrested for a crime say 'yep I stuffed up - take me away' or their friends say ' yep he was an idiot - take him away'.
My congratulations goes to the arresting officer but the political machine could destroy his career and I just hope the officers' commander at Bradley Beach stand by their officer.

Then again if this is just a tall tale, I hope the Mayor sues the story teller.
