We have used Lou Guarini Plumbing & Heating twice at home for minor plumbing repair work. They are very professional, I highly recommend them. Check out their website:

Do a google on them for any additional information (reviews, etc).

creativeconquests,

Sorry to hear you were not impressed with the food. You should have probably gone for a fancier dish than a burger...

We actually went for dinner to The Embankment last week and had a much better experience. My husband had the risotto which was very tasty (although a tiny undercooked). I ordered one of the daily specials, the Surf and Turf with monk fish and pork chunks and some exotic mushrooms and veggies. It was delicious, the pork almost melted in my mouth, and the size of the portion was perfect. We also ordered the soup of the day (a cream of mushroom) which was really good. The waiters were serving the soup to every table in a cappucino cup as a treat from the Chef... nice touch.

The staff very very attentive that night. Service was a bit slow for the main course, but overall we enjoyed the food, the ambiance and the service. And the staff speaks Spanish, magn?fico!

We'll certainly go back again.

We finally went to Ox last night and what a feast! We had a wonderful dinner. The food was excellent and we were also very pleased with the service. Out waiter (Ben ?) was supper attentive and friendly. All the waiting staff made a great impression on us.

So onto the food... We tried the ox tail with polenta appetizer (outstanding). for main courses we ordered the skate dish (served with a bed of kale and mashed potatoes) and the scallops and cockle stew. We gave two thumbs up to both dishes, very tasty, nicely cooked, good sized servings. For dessert we tried the mango creme brul? and the apple with almond foccacia... yummy!

We'll certainly go back and try some of the other specialties, and will probably repeat the Tempranillo red wine!

I am also very sorry about your loss, but leaving valuables (specially a bag and wallet) inside a car parked in Jersey City is a very tempting invitation to a break-in. Safety tips and warnings on how to prevent car break-ins have been posted in Jersey City numerous times. The JCPD has regularly advised on this matter and distributed flyers at the JC Downtown Watch meetings on how to prevent this type of incidents. It is just common sense to not leave any valuables of any kind inside the cars!. And people just don't learn the lesson (sigh...) Sorry folks, this is not Beverly Hills, car break-ins are a reality in this area. Please educate yourself and your neighbors in this matter, and take the time to attend the monthly neighborhood watch meetings.

wayne-st-girl,

I would advise that you attend the next JC Downtown Watch meeting on Sept. 10 and voice your concerns to Captain McDonough and officer Dina reilly. They are regular attendees at the neighborhood meetings, along with Councilman Steven Fulop. See what they have to say about the incidents you reported in this thread.

For those of you who drive through Route 1-9, pay attention to the Pulaski Skyway bridge foundations in the circle where Rt. 1-9 intersects with Tonelle Avenue and the Skyway. Quite scary!

A lot of the bridges in the area (NY/NJ) are due for major repairs or complete replacement. Have you noticed, for example, the nets on some of the big bridges connecting Manhattan to Brooklyn to hold the debris falling from the bridge structure?

Unfortunately, our governments have historically not paid much attention to the national infrastructure (I guess it is just not "cool" to talk about repairing bridges, train lines, etc.) So it wouldn't surprise to see more disasters like the one in Minneapolis happening in other areas of the country in the not so distant future...

Re: my first JC parking ticket

As a matter of fact I contested a parking ticket at the Municipal Court yesterday morning at 9 am (the "walk-in" court). It was for a ticket we got when we parked at Newark Avenue (by Little India) in a supposedly prohibited area. I took pictures of the spot where we got ticketed, there were no indications whatsoever that parking was illegal (no yellow line, no signs, not even close to the corner of Newark and Tonelle Ave.). The Judge dismissed the case right away after seeing all the pictures I provided.

There is no fee for showing up in court, it was actually a pretty straighforward process. Just go when the walk-in court is in session (apparently on Fridays at 1 pm and Mondays at 9 am). Bring your ticket, fill it out with your personal information and bring "printed" pictures for evidence, if applicable. Pictures in digital cameras or in laptops are not accepted since they can not be retained by the Judge. The cases are processed pretty quickly. Hope this helps...

Re: State of the City Address - Mayor Healy

Hi Melissa,

One topic I'd like to address with the Mayor is the "trash" issue in Jersey City. It is embarrassing the amount of trash I run into in my daily walk to/from the PATH Grove Station. It seems like there is pride in having trash on the streets of Jersey City. It is an absolute eyesore and also a sanitary concern. If the Mayor is so proud of the Jersey doing "better than ever" ask him to explain how the trash helps in beautifying the city.

Our group by 4th St. and Coles hung out until almost 8:30 pm. The group had almost 10 people at some point, some of them dog owners with their doggies. It was very nice to meet some of the neighbors... Coles Street between 4th and 5th was fairly quiet, nothing to report... we did see the corfew van driving by couple of times. We were also strategizing on how to draw the trick-or-treat crowds tomorrow evening into Coles St. between 4th and 5th... it looks like the folks at 4th Street (between Jersey and Coles) tend to steal the show during Halloween night...

Hi BrightMoment,

I can help you with the translation of the flyers to Spanish (it is my native language). Feel free to PM me the information you want to have translated.

Also, thanks for conducting the JC Downtown Watch meeting last night and to Pam for handing out all the different flyers and brochures!

How can we better advertise the JC Downtown watch meetings in the community outside of JCList? I am thinking we could print color flyers and post them in the laundromats and street light poles of the main avenues/streets (Jersey, Coles, Erie, Manila). If anyone can get me a PDF file with the flyer I could make some copies at the office.

We need to really get the word out to the neighborhood!

Speaking of PSE&G and coal plants, is anyone in the forum currently signed up for "Green Power" from PSE&G? If so, how much more expensive is it? I am all for it but need to call up and get more information... feel free to share.

I personally like the pizza at Bertucci's, there is one located in Newport area (will you consider that part of Jersey City?). Bertucci's is very popular and well known in certain cities in Massachusetts, but their presence in the NY/NJ area is quite limited (too bad...).

Thanks to all for the valuable information you have provided!. This is really great and certainly look forward to joining the community as a resident very soon. All the comments and tips have been very valuable. We'll check the Harsimus Cove & Embankment walking tour this Saturday for sure!

Mouse, MoparLarry, I appreciate your comments about having/using a car in JC. It's a good thing to know that a car is optional in downtown JC. We'll have a garage in our new place in JC, so we may get a car at some point (more for weekend trips/errands). Need to start thinking about a fuel efficient or hybrid car with the gas price trend...

Cheers! -- Chama

Special thanks to MoparLarry and xstitch for your comments, very useful information indeed. Our new place is about 10 minutes walk from the Grove St. PATH, and yes, we?ve walked by Newark Ave. few times and noticed some of the stores & restaurants in the downtown JC area. We have also discovered some cute stores (like Gourmet Organic) and cafes (Isabella's) near HP area.

Based on your comments, I had few more questions to the readers:
- Where could I get more information about the mini-buses that take you to the PATH stations? This will be very handy on very rainy or snowy days.
- What kind of permit is required for visitors who need to park on the street for few hours? Is there such a thing like a ?visitors parking permit? to display on the dash board?
- Is there a Locksmith store in downtown JC, by Newark Ave or somewhere close by?
- What kinds of services are provided at Liberty Health Medical Center besides ER?

Thanks again!!

Advice to a 'soon to be' resident of downtown JC
Just can't stay away
Just can't stay away

Greetings to all fellow forum members!

I've been reading a lot of the postings in jclist.com for the past few weeks and decided to join the forum. We will hopefully become official residents on downtown Jersey City in June (we are purchasing a condo 3 blocks away from Hamilton Park, can't wait to move!!). We were not familiar with the downtown area of Jersey City until over a month ago, when we went for an 'Open House' tour with some friends. We really liked the area and were fortunate enough to find the kind of condo we were just looking for.
The forum has been a wonderful and colorful source of information to learn more about the community, resources, politics, and the idiosyncrasy of the residents. I look forward to participating in the forum discussions myself.

As a 'soon-to-be-resident' to the area I wanted to get a feel for what things you like the most about downtown Jersey City, and what things you like the least. What excites you about this place? What worries you? Just to get you started, we presently live in midtown Manhattan, in an area that is not really residential. It is very convenient to get to work (we walk everywhere pretty much) and get to see all kinds all people, any time of the day or night. However, the noise on the streets (like garbage and demolition trucks during the day and late night) is simply unbearable! The taxes are killing us, and forget about thinking of buying a condo here (and I can't stand the co-op philosophy on residential buildings). The city is just too busy and too noisy for us. We are longing for a more residential, quieter, charming place to live, where we can find a sense of community and stability... and, of course, with a convenient commute to NYC.

Anyway, feel free to share your thoughts, and any advice on how to prepare for our new 'home' city will be greatly welcome. Thanks so much in advance!!
