Artists needed for Jersey City Artists Studio Tour - GUITARS
#91
Just can't stay away
Just can't stay away

Hi all - it's almost that time again, and with the success of last years 'Guitars' exhibit at the 4th st. Music and Arts Festival and the Canco Lofts we're doing it again! We're looking for local artists to take a shiny new electric guitar and chop it, paint it, burn it... whatever you do... do it. Please give us a call at the store and ask for me - Mark - at 201-222-8441.

Here's a link to last years guitar show with info about what it was all about....

I forget the name of the specific office, but it's at City Hall... ask at the guard... and bring a camera. As I recall, it's straight ahead to the right when you walk in (It's been a few years since I did it). You can also get all kinds of other interesting information about the property... and the 1960 surveyer's photo as well.

I might be up for it... I'm a classical violist (or was in a previous life) and have been wanting to get back into playing a bit. Sheet music required.

I haven't really noticed any recession at my business... in fact sales are way up so far for 2008... but I think my business is a little strange in that for musicians, it's really a necessity and not a luxury for some items. I think it's really a case-by-case situation... other downtown business owners that I've spoken to are definitely worried... not only did Janam close/move, but Kinaret closed last week as well.

I thought it was pretty pathetic until I read:

His wife must just be thinking "You idiot - I'll be at my parents - see you next week."

I worked in the toy department of a major department store when I was in high school... it was before everyone was credit-card-crazy and using their Visas for $5 purchases, but it was also 20 years ago and average sales were smaller, and around Christmas we regularly had $30k-$35k per _day_. I dont think there's anything fishy about $27k at Christmas in a store with an average item price of $50.

Maybe he was figuring in a $500/month condo fee... but either way, if I had a choice between giving a landlord $1100 a month or building some equity at $1800 a month, I'd stay put... at least to flip the place... $225k seems like a good deal.

Well if we're starting a whole rant here - Not only did the cops not find the car - but we had a Lojack on the car. When we told the East District cops (7th street) they said "We don't have Lojack locators in our new squad cars - you'll have to call the state police". When I asked if they had any OLD cars with the locators they said "yeah over in the parking lot" but they wouldn't send anyone out to just turn the thing on to see if our car was in the area. When I called Lojack the representative almost had a coronary when I told him all this.

It's tragic that the boy died, but his initial crime was just speeding... Being in the wrong place at the wrong time and the lack of seatbelt turned it into manslaughter. I think the maximum for vehicular manslaughter is only about 14-15 years... and for that he probably would have needed to be drunk or high. Since he appears to be a scumbag anyway, maybe they'll tack on enough years for the car theft, speeding, reckless driving, leaving the scene etc. to keep him locked up for a while.

I left my car for work at Pep Boys - but the lot right in front was full, so I parked it a few spots over closer to BJs, and it was towed. They claimed that the Pep Boys lot (bordered by the drivable section) is separate from the BJs/Shoprite/BedBath section.... luckily Pep Boys got them to tow it back.... but not before I spent 30 minutes fighting with them. This was Danny's Towing - the red truck - and Danny is a dick.

Some of the graffiti is beautiful... but if I got to my store one day and my gates were covered with it I'd be pissed... it's not the look or the style that I want on my private property... if they'd like to do it on a big canvas or piece of plywood and leave it leaning against the front of my house, then I wouldn't mind so much.... I could find a proper place to display it. :) I'd also like some guitar bodies done btw.... ;)

Mark.

SPEAKING of painted guitars - if you're walking by Metropolis Music, check out the guitars in the window... part of a show we're working on for the 2007 Artists Studio Tour.

The pile driver attaches to the crane - it's laying down at the site and they raise it up earlier and earlier every morning and get to work (yesterday was 8:21am) I live about 100' from it.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Kafar_na_Odrze.jpg

As for tearing down the original building, the only thing holding it up was the paint, so there was never really any other option besides levelling it - though to meet all the zoning/permit requirements they'd have done the usual 'leave the skin and gut it, then replace the skin'.

Mark.

Edit: as I was typing this the pile driver started - 8:02! A new record!

The program is free, yes, but it's complicated. To give up that 3% the state makes you jump through some hoops. To qualify a business must have at least one part-time and one full-time employee, both of whom must be Jersey city residents. Also, the required number of employees (who must be Jersey City residents) increases at least for the first year or two, so if you dont hire more people you lose it. There's also a lot more paperwork involved in filing taxes. I'd love to offer 3% but I don't have enough employees to qualify.

You guys are so screwed when a hurricane hits Jersey City. The New York Bay and hudson river is a right angle, which will amplify a storm surge, not to mention when the surge causes the hudson to back up temporarily. In addition to that, a hurricane spins in a counterclockwise direction, which means that Jersey City will take the brunt of the surge. Maybe it is 5 feet, maybe 35 feet, either way, anything less than 50 feet above sea level is in danger.

Yeah yeah yeah... we all saw "The Day After Tomorrow" We live on 5th and are required to have flood insurance.... we used to live on West Hamilton and were not.... but if you ever walk down Coles st. you notice there's not much of a change in altitude. Politics. That's the answer to all questions.

I had a plainclothes detective come into my store a couple of years ago to retrieve a stolen instrument and he ended up being the biggest ass I've ever met.... accused me of only selling stolen merchandise etc... in front of customers and employees. ANYHOO, yesterday I saw him in uniform on Newark Ave. writing a parking ticket. Is it like in the movies? Was he busted down to ensign or something? Man that would be awesome.
