Jersey City Municipal Campaign Finance Reform
#91
Home away from home
Home away from home

I know some of the people on these boards are smart lawyers and stuff. I've read so many threads about the corrosive nature of money in local elections. Is this something we could address together on a local level? To even the playing field? Obviously many people here on these boards care a lot about Jersey City and what happens next here. Without the influence of individual donations, maybe we could all decide together.

Is it possible to have municipal public funding of local elections? With strict spending caps and tight restrictions? I've said elsewhere that Jersey City is one of the most diverse places in the country. How many extremely thoughtful candidates for local office could we inspire by taking money and undue influence out of the picture?

Do you guys think that we should change local campaign finance laws to limit the influence of individual donations to our elections? Could we have public funding laws for Jersey City that set spending limits?

Yvonne keeps harping on Nandwani in Ward C not disclosing financing and incurring fees. How large are these fees? They must be large enough that no one wants to incur them.

Should we work on local campaign finance ordinances that are structured in a way to prevent people overspending to win seats and the mayorship? Is it possible to pass things like public financing of campaigns on a local level?

The other thing I didn't get about the Grillo story the Jersey Journal did was that he was going to pay in January 2018 for the rent. Not December. Is this because the run-offs were in December? Would he really have paid at all for this space if not for the Journal's story?

I would take James Solomon over our current President

I have gotten around 10 Fulop mailers here in Ward C and none by Matsikoudis. Maybe he's focusing on other neighborhoods? I know they have less money. But I get Christmas and birthday cards from Yun for some reason. BOE candidates I've never heard of have sent me two mailers apiece.

I think public libraries, and all the services they provide, should be supported enthusiastically.

We don't have any polling data about Jersey City races.

Only 38 percent of NJ voters showed up to vote in the last gubernatorial election.

HUDSON COUNTY:

Christie 42,567
Buono 53,386

Are they expecting a larger turnout this time around?

The last election ended up:

Fulop 14,675 votes
Healy 10,860 votes

Do you think Matsikoudis can get the same number as Healy?

I like that elections are in November and now coincide with New Jersey State ones.

Run offs will be in December. Crowds will not be good for council races

We're not supposed to challenge people here at JCList?

Am I doing something against the terms and conditions here?

Should we all just sit with hands folded neatly?

I can't join discussions? How many people on JCList do you speak for? Millions of anonymous trolls? For all I know you live in Weehawken, Anonymous Person who speaks for billions of other anonymous people.

Look where ever you want, and decide for yourself. The $2000 that got spent on the ChicPeaJC article was the best money any politician ever spent.

Re: Rich Boggiano JSQ/Ward C City Council

I'd urge Ward C voters to find a positive voice who can help usher Journal Square into the future, not the distant past.

In 2013 Boggiano received 1,686 votes to Lopez's 1,332 votes. Lopez had moved from Healy's team to Fulop's. Lopez allegedly spent most of her time in Florida.

Journal Square can do much better. We've gave Rich a chance. What does we have to show for it?

Based on this I'm leaning toward Nandwani.

Tough to say. The last mayoral election was in the summer of 2013. This one coincides with a gubernatorial campaign. Will turnout be demonstrably higher?

65/35?

What kind of job should a councilperson have? What makes a "good" Downtown councilperson? Can you name a few examples from the recent past?

So far she:

Is paying $2000 rent

Paid a weblog for an ad and (Maybe??) an endorsement

Is in Real Estate

Real Estate is bad

Except when property values, parks and services go way up

But still bad

Is a lawyer

Didn't do a lawyer thing lawyers do

Real Estate bad

Jersey City was wonderful before development

Outsiders bad

Ladies bad

Something something
