I went recently for a shave and though it's pricey, it's definitely a relaxing experience, like a nice massage. I felt very relaxed and almost felt like falling asleep at times. Very nice guys, and a very thorough shave, they really know what they're doing.

Really a great place.

There's a lot of overnight work on the Turnpike as well. I guess they have to do it then because it's when there's the least amount of traffic. But yeah, it can get annoying sometimes. My fiancee woke up the other night asking why someone was banging on our door.

Re: NYC-based alcohol delivery startup expands to Hudson, Bergen counties

Hey everyone, we're the shop that's covering the Downtown area and the area around Newark ave up towards Journal Square for Minibar. Other shops will be covering Hoboken and other parts of JC. Minibar doesn't actually do any deliveries, they just act as a front-end for shops, the same way that delivery.com or seamless.com act as front-end for restaurants.

It's good for us, because we aren't able to get a good online shop up right now, and it's a quick and convenient way for people to order stuff without having to worry about a bunch of shops (our first ever delivery was today, and was from someone staying at a hotel, who would never have known about our shop otherwise).

I don't think the delivery aspect is as much about being "too busy" as it is having the convenience. Especially when it's raining or snowing out. We're also hoping to get beer-lovers and homebrewers that don't have cars - since we're the only homebrew shop in the county, and we get a lot of beer that other shops don't get, it's nice to get a delivery if you don't have a car to transport stuff.

You can also give us a call directly instead of using Minibar, of course. So yeah, that's the behind-the-scenes a bit. Don't knock it til you try it, I would never in my life have considered delivery beer and wine until I opened my shop and realized that everyone is coming from a different spot. If anyone has issues with their orders from Minibar, please let us know - we're a brand new shop and we're working hard to make stuff work and we love feedback.

I hadn't considered it, but this parking lot is about 2500 square feet, I feel like unless it were a giant snowblower, I'd end up just hating myself while trying to maneuver it around, unless you know of some badass snowblowers that can handle something that size easily.

It's going to start snowing soon, and I could use a recommendation for a plow guy for our parking lot. It's not very large, but it would be a pain to try shoveling it. Thanks!

Re: PATH (pathetic attempt at transporting humans)

Finally figured it out
http://www.nj.com/hudson/index.ssf/20 ... s_closed_for_weekend.html

JSQ - 33rd is being slowed down to 12 minutes from 10 minutes
NWK - JSQ is being slowed down from 10-15 minutes all the way to 20 minutes.

So yeah, more cuts to service. I expect by this time next year they will just shut the entire system down and put locks on the entrance. But you will have to pay $5 to look at the entranceway.

edit: actually, it's not clear if this is just for weekends, or weekdays too? I think it's just weekends, in which case it might be a service increase? Someone needs to grab one of the actual physical schedules in the station and report back.

I can't figure it out either. This helpful message is on the PATH website:

Quote:
10/24/2014 1:50:07 PM
Starting 10/26 new train schedules will be in effect. New Timetables are in literature racks at all stations, or visit www.panynj.gov/path

So to find out the schedule, it tells me to go to the PATH website, where it just tells me to go to the PATH website? The schedules page is effective January 2014.

http://www.panynj.gov/path/full-schedules.html

So...I have no idea.

Re: Jersey City has some of the most expensive wine in the country; WTH!
Home away from home
Home away from home

This sounds surprising, but I'm a bit skeptical of their methodology, which wasn't explained in the WalletHub summary. It just says "a bottle of white table wine" was compared. What does that mean? Any thorough study would have a full basket of wines that are widely available throughout the US. Does Jersey City have the most expensive wine prices because JC prices are high, or because most wine shops sell high-end liquors? I'd say that even the most expensive shop in JC is selling for less than most stores in Manhattan. I imagine the wines being sold in Indianapolis aren't the same wines being sold in Portland.

Same with the beer, what beer are they comparing? A 6-pack of Abita costs about $10 in JC or any other city in the US, but it's $16 in Manhattan. Is St Louis the cheapest because they just have cheap beer, or because everyone is drinking Anheuser-Busch?

I believe it was on 8th St, between the park and Monmouth St. It was VERY loud over there as I was walking home. I didn't both trying to hone down the exact location. No idea what it was, sounded like some machinery, a saw of some sort. Could have just been a fridge or something gone haywire.

Is there an outdoors shop in the area where I could get a gas lantern, as well as stuff like compasses and other camping gear? I checked out Home Depot, Target, and Sears, but all they have are those dinky LED nightlights. It looks like the closest place would be one of the Sports Authorities by route 3

We have recently become the #1 spot for our friends and neighbors to stop by when they need boxes for moving. Warning! PSE&G Scam from Vermont area code 802
Home away from home
Home away from home

Just got a call from someone advising me that PSE&G's computer systems did not record payment and that technicians would shut off our power at 4:30pm today. When asked for the account number, they gave some lame excuse about how their computer system was updating and he could not access that information. I asked for a number to call them back at, and a person (not a robot!) picked up and said "This is PESG Power how may I direct your call?" at which point I laughed at them and hung up.

I was skeptical from the beginning with it being a Vermont area code but figured they might be outsourcing. Seems that there is a lot of scam action coming from these Vermont numbers (http://800notes.com/AreaCode.aspx/1-802). Do not tell them anything. If there is supposedly a problem with your account, call PSE&G directly!

Just because the same group was posted here a month ago, it doesn't make it a spam.

We are a market research company who has been working pro-bono with local advocacy groups to help create entrepreneur's community that will help us identify how to make Jersey City more friendly to entrepreneurs & small businesses like yours and to propose appropriate policy changes and advocate for additional incentives and funding for small businesses.

We are not able to go traditional market research route here because none of the market research panel providers has a panel of small businesses in such limited geographic area.

I would welcome your recommendations as to how else we can effectively find and recruit entrepreneurs in Jersey City for our group and how to make it not look like spam.

I appreciate the response (here and on facebook). That alone tells me that it's not spam, as most spammers are "hit and run."

I think the main reason it seems spammy is because there is no background. It's unclear who is forming this group and what the purpose is. Are you with a business? An individual? A business owner yourself? Market research firm?

Be more upfront with information like that, and people will be more likely to hop in.

Re: Small propane tank?

Home Depot, despite selling empty 25lb tanks, does not do tank exchanges, which is so weird. They do have full 1lb tanks so they might take it. But a better bet might be the Shell station by the tunnel, as they do tank exchanges. Or contact the company who made the tank and ask them.

It is, surprisingly, true. The condensing lines have to go into a drain or sump pit or something. In our case at least, the plumbing inspection went by very quickly, since the inspector seemed to understand the simplicity of it. So it's just a bit more paperwork and cost.

Overall though, I love our split system, it really is quiet and efficient. The outdoor unit is super quiet as well.

If you get a New Jersey Craft Beer card, HopsScotch has $1 off all beers, which brings the prices down appropriately. At the Thirsty Quaker, we also have a 5% discount if you have the card. Lots of bars and shops around the state do special things, and for $20 a year it's not a bad deal.

That's a pretty cool idea, especially the oompa band in the gazebo! Maybe in the future we can organize something like that. The brew club does beer festivals and contests from time to time as well, so look out for those.

When at Zeppelin Hall, ask for a glass. They often have glass mugs available but they default to plastic ones, since people go nuts and like to steal glass mugs. Beer tastes much better out of a proper glass though, those plastic mugs have an off taste and smell to them.

I'm not sure how much "cheap" local beer you're going to find, other than the stuff coming out of the Anheuser-Busch-Inbev factory in Newark. If Ballantine were still around, then maybe.

where do they sell it in Jersey City?
Carton is frequently on tap at Barcade and White Star (more often at White Star, as Barcade is frequently rotating). Carton Boat is a great Session IPA, and Carton of Milk is an awesome stout. Last time I went to White Star they had Carton's Monkey Chased the Weasel on tap, which is not for everyone.

Not too many liquor stores carry Carton Boat cans right now and they don't can their other stuff, but we should make the cut for their next round of expansion.

Other great local beer: NJ Beer Co. Awesome guys and great friends of ours. As Monroe said, the real deal is at their brewery, where you can get really cheap pints, 6-packs, and growlers to go. (or stop by our shop for some, we've got everything that NJBC sells).

Bolero Snort is pretty local as well, just north of us in Bergen County, and another small operation. Their beers are reasonably priced too, and they do a lot more experimentation than NJBC. Grazer is a new dry-hopped wheat beer that's a great summer drink. Longhop IPA is a pretty good session IPA. They're pretty well priced too. And we've got their Black Lager, Rye, and Amber Lager too.

And I've been talking too long. If you want to stop by our shop, we will talk your ear off about beer, especially local breweries. We're friends with a lot of local breweries, including 4 new breweries that will be opening in the next year or so.

I guess it depends on how badly damaged the ring is, but we took my new fiancee's ring to one of the places in the mall to get it resized, polished and fix a missing prong, and it was cheap and fast. Probably more reliable and accountable than some two-bit place in Chinatown too.

Is anyone familiar with permits/etc that might be needed to do a mural? I'm interested in getting a mural painted on one of the walls in our parking lot. I'm not sure if the rules would be different since we're in the historic district, and since it's not street-facing.
