Typically, military flyovers fall under training hours for these pilots/crews/squadrons. If they weren't doing these hours in a public forum like Superbowl pre-game, they'd be doing it in a less public forum over some random unpopulated area. So, depending on your frame of mind about it, you get more bang for your buck, not less... at least for the flyover aspect.

Also, in terms of taxes, the NFL doesn't pay, but the individual teams do. Also, out of state players pay a specific 8% tax on their proportioned earnings for the week. So, something like .16% of their annual salaries. Which isn't nothing, especially when talking about the dollars involved.

I've seen a bunch of military helicopter convoys and all of Newport is practically on security lockdown. I can't believe so many agencies are spending so much money on this event. The NFL doesn't even pay taxes. Local restaurants and other venues seem emptier than usual. When I lived in the Heights the North Ward of JCPD informed me regularly they simply didn't have manpower to respond to street violence and gang issues. What a waste of resources.

Wow, 0.16%! That's $1600 on every million. It's not nothing. Neither is 50 cents and a cup of coffee.

I'd love proof that these are training exercises.

Well, don't bother calling the cops because guess who hangs out there? I have seen plenty of personal vehicles (PBA plates, JCPD hats in the back window etc.). I saw the JCPA come a little while ago because of all of the illegally parked cars and a detective came out to tell them to go away. Hopefully the new development across the street will have an impact, but I doubt it.

Good to see exactly how serious they are about dangerous criminals:

http://www.nj.com/hudson/index.ssf/2014/01/post_467.html

"The arrest came after a rack of jerseys were spotted outside Cervino?s store while CNN was covering a task force searching for counterfeit NFL merchandise composed of members of the Department of Homeland Security, the Hudson County Sheriff?s Office and the Hudson County Prosecutor?s Office, a sheriff?s office spokesman said."

What is with all the graffiti that just popped on Columbus St? It has gotten worse. And the graffiti I'm talking about is not artwork. They are actual gang signs, tagging or lewd comments. They have increased because the ones done previously were never erased. Stuff like this can be detrimental to the neighborhood. If I had seen that much graffiti when I was looking for an apartment I wouldn't have looked there at all.

Any chance a clean up event can be set up before I walk around with black paint erasing all the graffiti, making things look uglier?

Or is there a number to contact in the city and they come by and erase it?

I'm curious what you consider to be gang signs.

Interesting. I've always wondered why the #6 stops at 33rd St., instead of 34th, like all the other lines. I wonder if there is a connection.

It's complicated. PATH used to stop at 34th, but the station was pushed a block south for construction of the Herald Square station at some point in the 30s/40s when the Sixth and Eighth Ave lines were built.

The #6 stops at 33rd because station construction was blocked by the trolley tunnel that runs under Park from 34th to Grand Central, now used as a vehicular tunnel. Next time you're at 33rd on the #6, look at the express tracks. They sink very low beginning at that station to go underneath the tunnel.

Re: Why does our water supply have so much chlorine in it?
#96

If you look on page six of the Jersey City sheet, there's a section for disinfection byproducts, mostly bromo and chloroacetates. These chemicals were found to be carcinogenic in studies published within the last ten years. Chlorination byproducts (CBPs), compounds occurring after reactions of chlorine and organic matter, have been known to be carcinogenic for a quite a while. I don't know if UW is intentionally obfuscating their results in these reports, but they're certainly not doing their part in making them accessible. NYC recently put a UV disinfection system online in place of chemical disinfection for the New Croton water supply because of these concerns.

Our water doesn't always come from the Boonton supply. UW has an interconnect that allows them to divert water from the Little Falls Intake into our supply. It's straight from the Passaic River in an area with a lot of point source pollution, so they tend to go a little heavier on the disinfection when they're doing that. I drink buckets of tap water every week and don't really notice the taste/smell (anymore?), but I remember Queens (Catskill) water being pretty good compared to ours.

I know our water profile is quite hard and is suited for brewing pilsners.

Chloride is very different from chlorine. Chloride is an ion of chlorine, most usually found in conjunction with another element like sodium or calcium. Excessive chloride content in municipal water exhibits a salty taste, not the bleach odor formed by excess chlorination. Your analysis is very misleading.

Jersey City and Hoboken have 70 ppm of chlorides in the water, whereas NYC has only 12.

I'm looking at your sources and cannot figure out where you got the 70 ppm value. Could you tell me where?

Think about the people that work at, say, Home Depot or Best Buy. Now imagine trying to trust them with giving you information about a car.

Is this a typo? The Meadowlands Rail Line is on a branch off of the Pascack Valley Line, which runs out of Hoboken. Why would they make people transfer?

how so?

(by "shit," I was referring to the metric asston of salt. not actual poop. sorry if that confused you.)

No, that's exactly what I meant. How is road salt worse than the gallons of dog piss going into the river? I think salt is important and dogs are important, for different reasons. But don't act like salt is somehow inherently evil when you can just put shoes on your dog and circumvent the whole issue.

Yes. They will give you a regular stick on permit but they'll tell you to tape it to your window instead of actually sticking it on. It's good for 30 days, and it's the usual $15. When you get your permanent plates, you bring the permit back and they give you a new one with no charge.

You're not looking for a debate but you keep trying to ram your point home over and over again. We get it, you'd rather sit at a computer all day clicking around than go out in public. Good for you?

I don't know how you do it, but I find it difficult to keep up on book news and be aware of every single new release that I might be interested in or every book that has been published in the past that I've missed. Going to a book store to scan titles and thumb through titles that look interesting just seems a lot more efficient than going to various Amazon pages, clicking on the summary, reading it, checking the reviews while avoiding spoilers, etc, until my eyes hurt and my ass is going numb from sitting in front of the computer. I'm happy to pay the premium.

Secretary of State Clinton, how do you respond to allegations you did nothing to prevent the murder of a US Ambassador, could not identify where you were or what you did during and after the attack, and helped cover up the aftermath? 'What difference does it make?'

Which action carries more gravitas, and reflects worse upon the candidate?

It really takes zero imagination to figure out where you get your news from.
