I'm new to JC (and the USA as a whole, fresh off the boat a year ago or so). These older names are far superior to the replacements. Actually, one of my peeves is the renaming of everything and anything to historical figures. Maybe if it was just surnames, it'd sit right... but it seems kinda odd to see things like "Martin Luther King Drive", "Ronald Reagan Boulevard" or "Warren G. Harding Middle School".

Then again, I'm probably showing my ignorance and Jackson, Henderson, and Manila were probably named after people (but at least it was just the surname)

Like a property tax reval should we then re-name the streets every five to ten years ? Actually bad example 'cause we have revals nearly every thirty years ? But you get the idea.

I'm trying to do some research on my family. Both my mother and father, Jeanette and Albert (deceased), lived in Jersey City.

My mother's family owned a furniture store, their last name was Nyman. This probably would have been sometime between 1940 and 1960. The furniture store was sold and a grocery store built in its place.

My father's family owned a bakery, their last name was Somlo, same time period as above.

I don't know addresses or even names of the businesses. If anyone has any recollection, I would very much like to hear from you.

Try the New Jersey Room in the main library on Montgomery St. and Jersey Ave. They have old photos and books on our history. Also you might want to try the Jersey Journal archives in the periodical research area. What section of town was the bakery and furniture store located in ? There are some historians within Jersey City you could also contact.

maybe more and more jersey cities will consider consolidation in order to be run more efficiently. honestly, i don't understand why hudson and bergen counties don't consolidate into one hudson city which would still be smaller than manhattan.

maybe governor-elect murphy should establish a commission to force municipal consolidation.

That is a ridiculous plan, it's not as if we are The South where all the towns are small and they just go by counties. Plus J.C. cannot keep up with their services and police matters as it is. We have equipment suitable for the size of Bayonne, Hoboken, or Secaucus. Our roads are atrocious and the repairs are a joke. Traffic patterns and parking have become a daily battle of wits and aside from bicycle use transportation options are minimal. North Hudson county has consolidated their fire department and that has worked well only because it has to follow strict guidelines with the state and their job is not taxing till it come time to deal with a fire which is a job in itself.

Again with this? You obviously don't get it. This new (estimated) numbers show what most have been claiming for years now: that DTJC had been underpaying their taxes to the detriment of poorer residents in areas that have seen little or no appreciation.

Yes I realize that genius - and reductions in taxes for Greenville \ Westside are totally warranted, but how is 1.6% multiplier for downtown not enough tho ? Hence free rides

Like I said, you just don't get it. The ~1.6% rate is what EVERYONE will be paying once the reval is concluded. People have been complaining until now because the effective rate being paid my many/most of DTJC was often 1% or lower, while other areas, like Greenville, were paying closer to 5-6%, which is why they are seeing such a substantial drop in their average payment.

It all in the assessment the rate will be $16 per $1000 of assessed value.

Free and outside, all the way to the right of the bay doors. They will also fill your car with air themselves

With the housing crunch DTJC is facing, what can be done to prevent more apartment buildings from turning into ad-hoc hotels?

AirBnB has absolutely nothing to do with any housing crunch in JC.

There are over 110,000 housing units in Jersey City. About 300 of them are listed on AirBnB. That's less than 0.3% of all housing units.

The real issue in JC is the same as the area as a whole, namely a lack of affordable housing. The only real option is to build a ton of affordable units. Needless to say, that's not the easiest thing to do in an area that is already developed, and where the locals are not exactly thrilled by the idea of adding more high-density buildings.

Plus the idea of renting out to tenants in an affordable housing environment can be daunting considering the cliental it would invite. Perhaps affordable housing to own as opposed to rent.

What's next forcing property owners to rent out vacant apartments that are not even reserved for Air BnB ? Some people do not wish to have tenants of any sort.

Fulop is such a great Mayor. Maybe more police departments can learn
how to deprive minorities the working conditions enjoyed by the
privileged white officers.

So a diversified force means less for the force and more for the city ? How does this change it financially ?

No, the beating is not warranted. It's awful to suggest that.

Growing up in NYC these stories were a lot more common in the era of "Gypsy Cabs." Our cities are safer now, and companies like Uber/Lyft can provide some trackability and accountability that did not exist before. But it does underscore the concern some have with companies that work a grey market.

A lot of the taxi industry's objections to ride sharing companies may be based on rent seeking. But there are legitimate concerns to address as well.

To me UBER / Lyft are gypsy cabs. No accountability when you're an "unmarked" car.

UBER and LYFT ma be good for passengers but not for fellow drivers and bikers who share the road with them. These make-shift cabbies seem to stop where ever they want and how ever they want. They are constantly in the way parking off corners, out into the lane, always trying to figure out where they are and where their fare's are. The drive timid and slow and wickedly fast around turns. As they wait for their fare in the dark of night they do not use their parking lights or hazard blinkers just their binding headlights. And when you bring something to their attention they look at you like a deer staring at the headlights barely mumbling. They are a haphazard on our roads with no remorse or fear of reprimand. Maybe the beating was warranted.
