Jersey City's "downtown" is Journal Square which is at least 10+ years away from away from being NJ's greatest downtown.

our downtown is a neighborhood shopping district like Bergen (McGinley Sqr), Central, MKL, Monticello, Ocean, Newark (western) and Westside aves.

I agree, if they can get Journal Square somewhat close to its original self then we will have a serious downtown scene. Newark ave dtjc is a place for pizza and toilet paper, which I can get in all the other areas you mentioned..

Yes you are correct, and the toilet paper is made from recycled sand paper. Tell your friends and neighbors.

just curious - when a church or parochial school ceases to have a religious function does it go back onto the tax rolls or does that only happen when the religious institution is no longer the property owner?

This company had an ad in the Sunday NYT for installing central air thru existing hot water or steam radiators. Has anyone looked into that?

Rumor on la rue (ROLR) is that a Vietnamese Resto is opening on 1st between Jersey and Newark a few storefronts down from the Bubble Tea. It's the place that looks like it might now be doing graphics. Any one else hear about it? Nice that the not Main Streets, like Erie and the Numbers are commercalizing too IMEO.

Who cares what the argument was over?

Do some people here think that Jersey City's parking situation somehow mitigates the egregiousness of this guy's alleged behavior?

Imagine if someone behaved like that because of littering. His boss would probably kick his ass to the curb.

Alternatively, people who don't want to or can't pay for street parking should not consider DTJC as a place to live, in the same way that people who can't afford private school and don't like the public schools.
Anyone ever read tha in Tokyo you can't register a car until you prove you have off street parking? Maybe I'm making that up, or its not Tokyo, but I wouldn't be the first to get my 'facts' mangled on JCList.

Jersey City could also use a new condo building. There's a lot of pent-up demand for new condos and no serious supply. Just one large condo building could do extremely well if it opened in, say, 2017. Not sure the market could support more than two or so, though.

Are condos not being built because of perceived lack of demand or reluctance on the part of banks to finance them? From my own perspective, rowhouses are the most desirable housing in dtjc, but some of us who bought in the 70s and 80s find ourselves with too many stairs, facing a second renovation (central a/c would be nice) and maybe wanting to packup for a few months during the winter. A full service condo, maybe even one geared to empty nesters, might find a ready market in DTJC.

My understanding is that government employees represent the government 24/7. Imagine if a cop started ranting at a group of homeless people or a teacher starting screaming at a mother or father about their parenting. I think she needs to go.

On a happier litter note the SW corner of 2nd and Jersey has changed owners and is now being kept swept and even hosed.

Darn, all summer I've been meaning to pick up a day old bread for panzanella (which we call Fonzarelli).

If a resident of a high rise is parking on the street, you should be upset with the JCPA. There are strict rules about on street parking on how long anyone can park. In all permit areas (which is all of downtown) no one can park for more than 2 hours without a parking permit. And, a resident of a high rise is not allowed to get a parking permit. So, if a resident is not allowed to get a parking permit, and that resident is parking on the street (presumably overnight and for longer than two hours) they are breaking the law and the proper agency should take action. Call the JCPA and ask them to step up parking enforcement and to ticket and boot the offenders.

Or, keep typing at your keyboard, frothing at the mouth, complaining about something that has a solution towards which you can work.

According to the sign on my block you cannot park longer than two hours between 8 am and 5 pm, Monday thru Friday. You also need to move your car for the sweeper twice a week. Other times you do not need a permit. Are the regs different in different zones? I am in a non-highrise zone.

Anyone ever see Marigold Brand Swiss Bouillon Powder for sale? It is recommended by Ottolenghi as an alternative to making your own.

As a recommendation: Shoprite has individually frozen mussels that we tried last night. We had the strange feeling that we might be entering into a murder/suicide pact. They were very good in a mussel/marinara sauce and cost about $3.00 for 7 or 8 ounces. Not sure what the ratio is, but probably equivalent to 4 or more pounds of mussels in the shell. Name is Pana Pesce.

If you plan on beginning construction this month it seems to me that the abatement is a given or you plan to go ahead with or without the abatement. I thought the policy was to save the abatements as incentives to build outside the waterfront/dtjc area.

Maybe it's a typo and he meant schmoozing - they share a lot of letters, and you do see a lot of people just hanging out and chatting. Or maybe he meant mozying, again a lot of letter overlap and also the pace of the bikes one sees with one's functioning eyes.
BTW, if it is not too early to think about naming the plaza after someone, I suggest Flip Wilson, JC's great comedian. So, if you do hit a kid with your bike you can say: The Devil Made Me Do It.

I've gotta agree with user111 here. This is a total half measure. I'd like to think this is just a trial period and once they confirm the success of the pilot program they will commit to it and make it look like something other than a closed street.

Earlier on I mentioned Lincoln Road in Miami. Not necessarily envisioning Newark Ave to become the high end tourist destination that Lincoln Road is but rather a pedestrian plaza that seems intentional and fully integrated in the streetscape.

I'd like to see the road bricked over with a nice tree lined median, a fountain, benches, and letting the restaurants spread out a little. It's wishful thinking but I believe if the city made the leap of faith to commit to the idea it would truly become the destination "Restaurant Row" that's always bandied about.

Even if they did none of those things the least they can offer wifi, when I was there I was like okay the street is closed, now what? I can sit at an unattractive picnic table or stand in the middle of the road and look clueless. If there was wifi and tables you can sit and read, or do some work or homework.

At least you don't have to put up with this fiasco. Lucky you who can just stay in Greenville or Imfullofbull. Pity us poor downtowners who stroll on a street so wide we fear being knocked over by tumbleweed, watch little kids zig zag chaotically without fear of getting hit by a car while their parents take videos as the first training wheel is removed, bump into so many friends that we fear we will become alcoholics from all the 'hey, let's sit down and have a drink', and mutter humbug from seeing all the young fathers taking care of their kids realizing that the dire predictions of the death of the American family may be wrong. Man, some people have all the luck.

Feel like I need to stand up for CH Martin here. They sell cheap stuff cheap. Maybe more foot traffic will mean more people checking out the places like that and realizing they don't need to go all the way to Bed Bath & Beyond to spend 5x as much for only slightly better quality.

I noticed that CH Martin has concessions for rent - look at the sign as you pass by the entrance. Maybe there is nothing stopping people right now from selling handicrafts, small antiques, etc except taking the initiative.
