Forget Vinnies III, go across 440 to the Pathmark plaza and go to Stadium Pizza. Thats the best pizza in JC.

I just drove across the Skyway on the way to work and saw nothing to indicate anything had happened. The article on NJ.com has had no updates and has been removed from the homepage, so I am guessing this was a hoax or someone was just gravely mistaken.

Massive water search after report that car with woman and 2 kids plunged from Pulaski Skyway

A massive water search is being conducted tonight in the area near the Pulaski Skyway in Jersey City after a report that a car driven by a woman with two children in it had plunged from the span into the icy waters below.

Jersey City Police Capt. Edgar Martinez said police got a call that the car had plunged off the Skyway, but he emphasized that it was "not confirmed'' yet that it actually happened.

A search is being conducted in the area of 305 Broadway and near the PATH bridge by the Jersey City Emergency Services Unit, the Port Authority Police and the Secaucus and Newark Fire Department marine units. Martinez said there was also a helicopter assisting, but he didn't know where it was from.

It also could not be immediately determined if there was any damage on the Skyway.

Looks like the Health Inspector decided to take action on this.

Link: Jersey City health inspectors shut down fundraising BBQ at cemetery

A fundraiser for the Historic Jersey City & Harsimus Cove Cemetery in Jersey City was stopped in its tracks Friday when city inspectors buried the event?s ?underground? chef with a slew of health violations.

A ?beautiful event? with flickering candlelight at the Newark Avenue cemetery was ruined, according to Eileen Markenstein, president of the cemetery?s board of trustees.

?I tried to explain (to city inspectors) this was to help our cemetery restoration,? Markenstein said yesterday. ?It was terribly embarrassing. We worked so hard.?

Shortly before 7 p.m. Friday, H. James Boor, the city?s chief inspector with the Division of Health, along with a fire inspector and a police officer arrived at the grounds and found chef Ramon Ruiz Delos Santos, 44, grilling food for the 45 paying guests.

Ruiz, who organizes culinary events under the name ?The Underground Supper Club,? was charged with selling food without a license and preparing food in a residential kitchen for sale, Boor said.

Boor said all food for sale must be prepared in commercial kitchens that have been inspected by state or municipal health inspectors.

The rice was prepared at the Ruiz?s home and food cooked on grills was not being stored in proper containers for keeping the food above 135 degrees, he said..

With a risk the food was contaminated with bacteria, the dishes had to be destroyed, he said.

?If he had been a proper chef, he would have been more prepared, rather than let the food in pans at room temperature,? said Boor. ?The food wasn?t properly handled.?

Ruiz said yesterday the dishes he was preparing for the ?Graveyard Barbecue Bash,? including steak kabobs and organic chicken breasts, were perfectly fine. He had only finished grilling the meats and had checked them to make sure the internal temperatures were correct when the inspectors arrived.

?They (the city inspectors) descended on us like it was a drug bust,? said Ruiz, who has held four previous events in Jersey City.

A former emergency worker at St. Vincent Hospital in New York City, Ruiz said he has been a personal chef since moving to Jersey City two years ago.

He said he went to the Division of Health on March 18 to find out how to obtain a food license but was told that until he had a permanent kitchen authorities could not help him.

The $40- a-ticket fundraiser was completely sold out after being promoted on the cemetery?s website, Markenstein said, adding some of the guests booed as the food was being carted away in a wheel barrow.

?It was a huge drama,? she said. ?It was just unfortunate for a poor little cemetery that is trying so hard to survive.?

Amelia's Bistro has Lobsterfest on Mondays. $15 (and you have to buy a drink) for a 1.25lb lobster. Went a few weeks ago and loved it.

Although I hate to recommend a place in Hoboken over JC, Philly's Cheesesteak in Hoboken on Washington is as close to a real Philly steak as I've gotten in the area. They are the only ones who get the bread right, and they have whiz. Piccolos in Hoboken, as mentioned, is fantastic too, but it is not Philly style.

If you are going to go all the way to Philladelphia, Tony Luke's is the best IMHO. I much prefer it to Pat's or Geno's.

I have tried a lot of cheesesteaks in JC and none really are that great. I was hoping for someone to throw out a new spot on this thread but alas I think the answer is that there is no great place for one in JC

Call PSE&G at 1-800-436-7734. On each utility pole, there is a ID plate that looks like a small version of a license plate on a car. It is helpful to give them the number off of that ID plate.

Minor point. but there is no bridge to the Statue of Liberty. I think you are thinking of the bridge to Ellis Island in LSP.

It was built for the restoration project so trucks could access the island, but it is closed to the public because NYC and the ferry operator have a vested interest in in staying closed to the public.

Re: Red light traffic camera

I was initially very skeptical on these things, assuming they were solely a money grab. I live near India Square, and the intersection at Newark and Tonnelle is a cluster %*&^ any time there is traffic. People run the light and do crazy things all the time. It is particularly dangerous as a pedestrian.

I have noticed a marked difference since they added the cameras. Most people properly stop at the red now before rolling through a turn-on-red. More people stop properly when the light is changing rather than speed up. Its not all drivers of course, but I think the repeat traffic, the people that are coming off Tonnelle Circle and trying to blow down the street at 50mph are now aware it is an intersection to drive cautiously through. People can debate the effectiveness, but this intersection is now safer in my opinion because of these cameras.

It is not that little camera looking device on top of the traffic light poles. If you look back about 20-30 feet from the intersection's that have these installed, you will see a tall metal pole with a box mounted at the top. Thats the camera. It also flashes a light when it senses an infraction may be taking place to ensure that the picture/video it captures is properly illuminated. The flash is not to inform the police.

More info on how it works....

Been there, done that, and I suggest you just pay it and move on. Even if you CAN win (which I don't think you can), you will actually have to take two days off of work and spend a good amount of time waiting around. It will cost you more in effort and wasted time/frustration that just paying it. The first court date is just your plea, where you would enter your not-guilty plea if you so desire. A second court date would then be set for you to come back and plead your case. All in all, its not worth it, and after it all the judge would just tell you that you have to read all of the signs on the block and that your are guilty as per the statute.

Haven't been there, but I'd recommend Lee Sims Chocolates on Bergan. It has also been there a long time (4th generation of the same family currently runs it).

I shop at the one on Sip often, and do not agree that it is a 'hot mess'. Their produce is great, far fresher than the A&P by the tunnel where I used to shop. Their meat and seafood is also very good; more like going to a real butcher. Its definetely not anything fancy, but I would not call it dirty.
