Meanwhile. in "underfunded" East Newark....
East Newark should not even be a town, much less have its own school district. But they are paying $145,000 to their super who just resigned his prior job under investigation. http://www.nj.com/union/index.ssf/201 ... t.html#incart_river_index When "stateaidguy" starts insulting people, you know you must be on the right track.

I'm not sure why people keep saying that state funds are somehow the suburbs money going to the city. The urban areas are where the jobs are located, and where business that generates sales tax is located. Sure there are some exceptions like the Short Hills Mall, and some income is generated from investments and the like, rather than jobs. But many of those suburbanites demanding their "fair share" commute into NYC, and pay their income tax to NY, not NJ. (The same is true, of course, for Jersey City residents that hop the PATH train in).
Whatever the issues with "fair share" of property taxes going to schools, Jersey City and other urban areas provide the lion's share of funding to the state.

The state should also phase out aid to all k-6 or k-8 districts, and impose a 10% surcharge on such districts until they merge into full k-12 districts. These micro districts create extra layers of administrative waste and are largely designed to segregate students from broader based populations which would include poorer and minority students.

The current board managed to make up a $75 million shortfall.
Other districts should be required to do so before redistributing any aid.

Ok, so the week in review.
1) We will be getting a new park and renovated waterfront paid for by a developer. You know, the entities who, in any other context, we DEMAND pay for things. 2) The statue will be moved to a more appropriate location. 3) The President of Poland will be visiting Jersey City. 4) Fulop is invited as a guest of the Polish government to visit Auschiwtz. 5) People who were fueling the fire and hoping this would be the mayor's downfall have their mouths agape at how well it worked out.

Another sculpture by Pitynski, "The Partisans" was moved from its original location in Boston and rededicated. I don't see why this would be any different.

He's only been office for a little over 100 days at this point, but so far so good. He's looking to raise revenue. As the original article points out, the pension shortfall doesn't have to be made up all at once, and if he can get some more revenue in he can start the process of building up the necessary funding. I'm not saying it's a done deal or that things can't get waylaid by other promises, but he is willing to raise taxes to get the revenue needed to start along the path.
His more flashy programs are requiring equal pay and family leave, and legalization of pot. Those don't require direct expenditures. We can debate over whether the former will constrict businesses in a way that lowers taxes, or whether it will allow for greater productivity. The latter, if approved, will bring in more revenue. I have said elsewhere I want Murphy to be a relatively boring Governor. So far, so good.

Murphy's primary platform as it related to spending was 1) fund the pensions, 2) fund the school formula, and 3) fix NJ Transit. He's thrown community college on top of that, which I think should wait. It could be that Murphy feels that he will need to add some sizzle to his programs, but his campaign was relatively practical and even bland (which in our case, I think is good).

The spending for the ARC tunnel, one of the largest mass transit projects in the country, was all set. Christie unilaterally killed it because he wanted to divert the money to road projects that benefitted Republican leaning areas. He then worked out a new deal, and Trump is trying to kill it for no other reason than animus towards Chuck Schumer. The right government leaders will spend money, even tens of millions, on mass transit. We don't have the right leader in Washington, who kills a project out of pure political spite.

So what? Income is taxed based on where it is earned, not what enclave the earner retreats to at night. I have a solo practice where I work in NYC but also work a lot from home in NJ. I have to allocate income based on where I earn it. Some of those wealthy suburbanites, if they work in NYC, don't pay NJ state income tax at all. Much more income tax and other revenues are generated in urban areas like Newark and Jersey City. Urban areas subsidize the suburbs.

I don't know the precise definitions of what constitutes Silver, Gold, and Platinum plans. Suffice it to say that the health insurance plan options are all very good insurance. Low deductibles, low co-pays, large networks, etc.
I would not object to the district agreeing to pick up a larger percentage of the tab IF the options included lower priced insurance, with the percentage going up if the worker chooses a more expensive plan. It's not all in the district's control, however. The law passed by Christie really is inane. Mandate contributions by workers for several years, then throw it onto the school districts to bargain later. It basically was a way to get a short term budget fix (and he still couldn't balance the budget), stick it to unions, and then leave it to everyone else to handle when he left office.

And that is why federal law provides for an abandonment process on rights of way. So that politicians that want to do favors can't get away with it, and that there has to be a public process that allows stakeholders and the community to be heard. In this case, the community made clear that it wanted to preserve the Embankment and use it as open space. Had CONRAIL followed the law, there would have been hearings before the property was abandoned, and it is possible that such community input would have led to the city purchasing the property. Instead they ignored the law, and Hyman was able to purchase the property on the cheap because the law was ignored.

I used to work at a firm that represented a lot of Taft-Hartley funds. We had a lot of Teamster locals as clients and were co-counsel on the various pension and welfare funds. Several of them applied for waivers from the Affordable Care Act. Some got waivers, others didn't. The ones that got it were not affiliated with locals that gave more to Obama, they were ones that were able to demonstrate why their plans warranted a waiver.

Our building has an agreement with some middleman that basically forwards the Dish Network's service. I do get outages in particularly bad weather. Not all the time, and usually not for long. But it's noticeable.
Then there's the fact that Dish Network doesn't carry YES network or MSG. They even got into a dispute with CBS and weren't carrying them for a while! We just got FIOS installed in our building and I'm looking to switch the other way, so I am curious about your experience!

The lobby was renovated and restored by Fleet bank. They were actually one of the first Jersey City Landmarks Conservancy awards winners in 2001 for their work.
But the gorgeous lobby was undone when a new bank, I think it was PNC, took over. I forget the exact year, but it was a while ago. So that, and the aforementioned roof collapse, happened well after that beautiful lobby was gone. All is to say, this didn't happen because of the Hyatt House renovation.

This reads like a humor column.
Just 1 week before, Augie Torres said that Symes had the tacit backing of the administration. Now he says that actually, Fulop never liked Symes. Just 1 week before, he said that Symes had labor backing. Now he says labor was wary of Symes, and that the Solomon campaign was actually meeting with labor the whole time. Just 1 week before, Torres held the endorsements of other elected officials as proof that the Fulop machine was working behind the scenes for her. Now he says that they "never really work" for the candidate they endorsed. I really wish I had a job where I could make stuff up and back it up with "sources say."
