I am renting out a room in my apt. I own the apt. How do I check out the potential tenant's background?

Do you have auto or life insurance? You might save by bundling a current policy with a new home insurance policy.

I have life and condo insurance with Liberty Mutual. I went to Progressive for a condo ins quote. It was actually more expensive through Progressive.

Totally agree but wouldn't that affect connections with NJT trains with Hoboken?

Believe me, nothing pisses me off more than seeing a Hoboken train with empty seats pull into Christopher Street during PM rush hour and then not be able to get onto a JSQ train that follows 5 minutes later.

Really? The trend is that people start families in Jersey City and move out to the suburbs once the kid is old enough to attend school.

I did a short-term freelance job in Montvale for 3 months. The commute was horrible but the pay made it worthwhile.

A few months back they wanted me back but cut the hourly wage my 1/3. I'm a freelancer and I don't pass up jobs. I had to tell them I wasn't interested.

I cannot imagine how much worse it will get when the Pulaski Skyway is closed.

I'd just like to know if garbage pick up is on tonight. Apparently it was cancelled on Thursday, 2/13 but it didn't stop people from putting trash out (and some idiot on my street thought it was a good idea to throw out a sofa and love seat. They are still out there, too).

Not sure if this is what you are looking for but A&P has two stands with dented cans/discounted items in the back of the store; between the cured meats and milk sections.

Fulop's first budget increased taxes

Wasn't it the Healy administration that increased taxes with their final budget prior to Fulop taking office?

It's not quite there yet.

I totally disagree with this outlandish statement, I got dtjc in 91 and all the Korean groceries were all ready in place, and doing well, some actually close because of gentrification. They have been in those same spots before most of us got here. The original poster was not asking for a some idiotic cupcake shop but a Korean fruits and vegetable grocery shop.

I moved from the Bronx to DTJC in 1990. The Korean groceries were there, but their produce and products they sold were subpar. Produce was rotten and hings like boxes of pasta or canned items were dusty and past their expiration dates. That said, the quality of of these groceries vastly improved as the area has gentrified.

Noticed this past week the news stand is closed by 7 or 8 pm. They usually stay open til 10 pm. Anyone know if this is a permanent change or possibly just weather related?

Does zip code factor into how they figure out how much policies will cost?

I used my DTJC zip code. My ex used his Union City zip. Neither of us smoke, we make about the same per year, but he's 2 years younger. He was quoted policies as low as $175/month (without the gov't stipend since his company still offers insurance). The cheapest I could find was $235 (with the gov't stipend).

Anyone have any recent inspection experiences?

Robin.

I know they still hook up the car via OBD2 to their computer for part of the testing. I'm guessing CEL errors would show on that. The inspection FAQ implies it's the mechanical part of the test they don't perform. Guess if you have a CEL lit, get it fixed before the inspection.

http://www.state.nj.us/mvc/pdf/Inspections/FAQinspection.pdf

I failed inspection a year and a half ago. My check engine light was on and I failed the emissions test. Turns out my check engine light was on because I needed to replace my catalytic converter, which is an emissions control device.

Had it replaced, check engine light went off, and passed inspection. I'm willing to bet your friend's catalytic converter needs to be checked.

Cutting through Downtown downtown to avoid turnpike traffic like everybody else. Pretty ugly making the turn onto 6th by the Embankment. Headed to the Westin I guess?

you are taking a pretty big risk without a permit... yes there is always some one who gets away with it (just like parking at the corners) but there is always someone who gets booted and comes on here to cry

I would go get a stack of the $3 temp passes to keep on hand just in case of stuff like this... in my book spending $3 always beats spending $140 (or whatever it is for the ticket/boot combo)

They can do this on Super Bowl Sunday but they can't do this during the week or on the weekends? Part of me hopes that there will be a signal failure or "police action" so the PA will be called to task.

Generally, people who move into affordable housing must verify their income. Once they are in, however, they do not get evicted if they start making more money. I had several family and friends who lived in Mitchell-Lama housing in NYC (limited dividend, middle income housing). If their income exceeded a certain level after they moved in they had to pay a surcharge for maintenance but that was it.

It's so crazy how all of this works..I have no idea if NJ public housing is anything like NYC but I know for NYCHA public housing in NYC your rent goes up, and you can even be moved to a different apartment, if your income increases. If it decreases again, you might have to be moved again. This is for people who are just barely above the poverty line. But this so-called "affordable housing" for people who may well work professional jobs in the 40-60K range doesn't have the same restrictions, when 60K gives you a LOT more mobility than 30K or less (for security deposits, etc.). Makes zero sense.

I have two buddies living in NYC one in Harlem the other in Chelsea and they are both living in the projects in apts that were passed down to them for 3 generations, this type of ish goes on all the time and both of these dudes make 90k a year.

I have a friend who has not one but two rent-controlled apartments in Brooklyn Heights. Her mom died so she moved into her mother's huge two-bedroom and now sublets her apt for about 4 times what she pays. I ask her if she's afraid of getting caught and she says she still gets her mail at her apt and is allowed one roommate. She says her tenant is technically her roommate.
