It's right next door.

I really like the style of the furniture they have picked out and I am also REALLY curious about that tilted style bar. I too would love a place with Sunday morning soccer and maybe an English breakfast fry to go with it.

Noise ordinances and permitting were changed but businesses still seem slow to catch on, with a few exceptions (i.e. Lamp Post). But White Eagle Hall is slated to open as a dedicated mid size music venue in the fall, so we'll see what happens.

Once white eagle hall opens in the fall I expect that this area will start to get more foot traffic. It will be interesting to see what that does for existing and potential future businesses.

Or perhaps you think JC ought to have more esoteric reasons for drunken fights? One guy beats the other too many times at "Missile Command" at Barcade, so the other conks him with a craft beer?

This is a good point. The response from FOL's is as if the city had seized property they owned via eminent domain. But the city owns the property and is their landlord and has therefore had a controlling interest all along, they just haven't asserted it until now.

I was also remembering that Healy pledged to entirely defund the Loew's if he was reelected and it was Fulop who advocated to continue funding. Either way, the writing was on the wall re: changes to Loews and I'm surprised that they didn't strategize for different contingencies (their responses read as very defensive to me, not planned out in advance).

I also would like to see what the FOL's alternative plan is for the theater, other than hiring a management company. "Come to me with solutions, not problems" is the line that comes to mind.

In nice weather, there are a number of people hanging out on the stoops in front of the buildings between Jersey and Barrow. I've found them to be friendly/non-threatening. Not sure how loud they get. I have heard the bands practicing when walking by.

I call them the "neighborhood watch." On that block they treat the sidewalks by the stoops as a sort of extended living room - card tables with card games going, sometimes blasting music from cars parked out front. They are boisterous but generally friendly and harmless. I wouldn't want to live on that exact block due to the noise but I'd rather have eyes watching the neighborhood than a desolate stretch.

Thankfully no charge (yet at least...who knows what will come in the mail).

I figured it only had to be a matter of time until the "it's all your fault" chorus would chime in. Because, clearly my not moving my car nullifies any genuine need for the city to improve communication with residents. I'm not saying I am a perfect model citizen here (I don't even recycle consistently. Oh the shame). I guess I'd just rather someone see this thread and pay close attention to the snow clearing schedule so they can avoid the headache I dealt with.

Why not just limit music to the end of the pier and have a decibel limit after 10 PM? I get that the acoustics mean that loud sound does really weird things when it's by the statue, but 9 PM, really? I didn't realize that exchange place had been converted to a senior living community.

Yep, about 10-14 days. Parking enforcement for street cleaning was suspended during that time. My car was buried in up to the windows and due to work I can only work on digging it out on weekends. I had dug out approximately 1/2 of it when I hurt my back and had to leave it for a while. I can manage without it (have been ordering groceries and taking the train/light rail).

I do follow Fulop on facebook but there was no mention of this on his page that I can find.

I would have strongly preferred to have been given the option to finish digging out my car and moved it myself. The reason it was there so long in the first place was being buried in by the city's plows literally up to the windows of the car, which became a mound of mostly ice very quickly. It was very unnerving that my car was just gone, and Resident Response and the East Precinct had no idea where it might have been moved to at first. For all I knew it could have actually been stolen.

I see both sides of this.

It is a shame that the FOLs efforts are being minimized and misrepresented. As restorationists, they have worked MIRACLES. Seriously. The theater has new lighting, a new soundboard, and so much work has been done - just look at the before/after pictures.

On the other hand, when FOLs tries to act as program managers, it becomes clear that it's not their strong suit. I know at least half a dozen people who have worked with, or attempted to work with them and the common story is 1. unreturned phone calls and emails 2. no regular business hours 3. delays on contracts 4. major inconsistencies between the terms of the contract and how the theater is conducted in practice.

I guess I would prefer that the city start by creating 2 full time positions: Grant Writer/Head of Fundraising and Program Manager. Let FOLs have a say in the hiring. Give them a year to secure funding and up their programming and revenue streams, before bringing in a big gun professional management team.

You are right. Part of the insane bureaucracy of health insurance is that the hospital or doctor always bills much higher than they expect to be paid. The insurance then essentially negotiates what they will reimburse. I've had bills for say $1200 where the insurance negotiated it down much lower e.g. $700 or something. Medicare/medicaid has negotiating power to get lower costs per procedure but in some cases this means reimbursements so low doctors in small practices actually lose money, or make something insane like $15/hr. A standardized billing procedure that neither short shrifts providers or patients is sorely needed.

I think this has been on the website for some time and is posted on the routes. Columbus is a snow emergency route from Center St. to the Hudson River. They actually should have removed all cars and plowed a long time ago."

It still sucks to have your car towed unexpectedly, though.

There is nowhere near adequate side street parking to accommodate all the cars that usually park on Columbus. A better option would be to have an emergency lot that residents could park in to clear the street. And again, there needs to be better communication about when a snow emergency is declared. My car was parked for almost 2 weeks without issue in the same spot prior to being towed.

To clarify, I am very glad the huge mounds of snow were removed from Columbus, but I don't think it's at all reasonable that I should have to check a city website daily to avoid a tow. Many of the people on my block are older and probably not internet savvy and I really don't understand why they couldn't post a dozen or so flyers, or better yet put them on windshields.

Additionally, after calling for more information it turned out that my car was not towed to a lot but was moved to a different spot on Columbus. It took a call to Residence response and 2 calls to the east precinct to get the correct information. They must have towed several dozen cars yet no one knew what was going on.

Car towed for snow removal. WTF Jersey City.
Home away from home
Home away from home

I don't understand how there was not a single flyer or notice in advance of them towing cars parked on Columbus Drive for snow removal. I came home to find that all the snow mounds are removed from my street (good) but that is because they towed my car (and others) out of the way to do so (NOT GOOD).

I had seen a list of streets where they were doing this posted here last week but it didn't include Columbus. News articles indicated that Columbus was slated for a second wave of towings/snow removal as of last week (see here http://abclocal.go.com/wabc/story?sec ... cal/new_jersey&id=9437150). So why couldn't some flyers been put on windshields/in resident's mailboxes if there was a 5 day delay in the plan.

Now I have to go get my car from a lot on Montgomery and Jorden which is highly inconvenient.

Jersey City, you are wearing on me.

What's the diversity that you're seeking to protect? I think it's important to define what you mean by diversity. From what I can tell, the newcomers to JC are exceptionally diverse...probably even moreso than those who've been here the last 20-30+ years. Not one of my dozen plus closest neighbors are the same in terms ethnic/cultural/religious background yet they're all a part of the gentrification wave.

I include culture, age, and socioeconomics in my diversity equation. I don't want to live in a majority poor neighborhood but I don't want to live in a wealthy gated community or condo either. I think it's good to have an influx of white collar "gentrifiers" but you also need mechanics, janitors, garbage collectors etc. and I find it depressing when everyone making under say 40K a year has to live on some outskirt of the "wealthy" area like it's a servant's quarters or ethnic ghetto or something.

Response from friends of Loew's re: Fulop's plans:

http://loewsjersey.org/loews-jersey-h ... lan-for-the-loew-s-jersey

They are pretty obviously pissed. It isn't clear to me whether the objection is to how they are portrayed in the article, or to Fulop's plan overall. It does say that they feel "pushed aside" by Fulop and this is also very telling:

"We defined the idea, which Mayor Steven Fulop now claims as his own, that the Loew?s is a cultural and economic resource for our community. "

I don't know that it matters who "owns" the idea. If they want it to be a resource, and so does Fulop, it seems in their best interests to work together. Complaining about "The City" holding you back for 20 years, and then also complaining about the same city's mayor wanting to push you forward, leaves you no direction in which to move IMO.

Let's be perfectly clear here, the landlord is not a major player in this situation, he has very little power.

The landlord's only choices are to offer the pair a new lease at the new rate, or let it go month to month at the same rate. Period. The little conspiracy with the roomie was just a bluff.

Yeah my suggestion was more about how to handle the situation diplomatically to try to minimize tension between the roommate and OP, and the landlord and OP. If the landlord sees both of them coming to an agreement it might assuage the concerns that led to the false "deal" he/she tried to strike with the roommate. A soured relationship with a landlord can affect living conditions (time it takes for routine repairs, response to complaints, etc.) so in my mind it's best to either try to keep everyone happy, or cut losses and move out.

And third. My roommate and I just stay our of each others way. We dont talk. SHe pays her half of the rent directly to the landlord as do I and she pays her half of the bills on time every month.

Ah, good to know. I think FOL events almost twice-per-month seems pretty fair. I'd be okay with that.

I remember reading that FOL currently puts on about 50 events a year, I think that includes private events like weddings. Assuming they stop offering the venue for rentals they should still be able to keep the majority of their programming. I follow their FB page and it seems to me like they only have public events (movies, performances, etc.) 1-3 times a month during their open season.

I never took cabs in JC until it got so cold that a mile walk seemed awful and I couldn't drive because there was nowhere to park due to snow. Many of the companies seem unreliable with no transparency in pricing. A group of friends met at a location and all of us came the same distance but paid different amounts for cabs.

I like the *idea* of uber but one caveat is that if it gets popular, at high demand times the cost will soar. On NYE in NYC people were paying $200+ for what were usually $50 fares. Their algorithm charges more based on demand. Not an immediate issue in JC but maybe down the line.

Re: Virile Barber Shop

My guess is that they will have an emphasis on ambiance, service, perks (like cocktails), and services like straight razor shaves which are less common. The market for luxury men's grooming exists. Some women cut their own hair or go to supercuts, that doesn't mean a master stylist charging $100/cut doesn't also have a market.

My partner has an unusual head shape and a bad cut on him is really, really bad. He gets his hair cut by Christina at Shampoo and I think pays $30 or $40. It's worth the extra 20 or 30 he pays compared to a barber shop, for him to like how his hair looks.

I would probably buy him a straight razor shave from this place as a birthday gift.
