Re: Credit Union Vs. Traditional Bank

The Co-op network has no-fee ATMs all over the country.

It is also possible to make deposits and other transactions at credit union offices in the network. I belong to a CU in NYC that is affiliated with a place I used to work. Their offices aren't so convenient for me anymore, but I can deposit checks at one of the credit unions in the Journal Square station.

Here's some more info:

CdeCoincy: I distinctly remember the first time I saw a "sharrow" - it was on Bay St in Staten Island, probably 2009 or 2010. At that moment I did not know the name of the symbol, but I immediately recognized what it meant. I learned the name not long after that - possibly on the NYC bike map, or Transportation Alternatives website/publication.

Bicycle Flame War Participants: Yes, there will always be a certain number of complete jackasses out there... some of them will be riding bikes. The idea behind bike lanes and sharrows is to foster safety and awareness on the streets. This is attractive to people who will be responsible cyclists. Jackasses don't give a f*** about sharrows - as one of you observed. More bike lanes and sharrows won't bring out more jackass cyclists.

A sharrow is a "share the road" marking painted on streets popular with cyclists that are too narrow for a regular bike lane:

Ferry might not be as fuel efficient/passenger-mile as the bus, but it can take a much more direct route to its destination than a bus... distance travelled will be quite a bit less.

If the cost weren't as high, I'd do bike/ferry every day (instead of bike > JSQ PATH > NYC subway or walk or Citibike to work). Much more pleasant way to go about it.

Just a quick note to express my gratitude to the people at Bike JC who organized today's Ward Tour.
I helped out a bit today, but that's a drop in the bucket compared to the many months of work behind the scenes to put this fine event together.

Thank you!

Piermont and Nyack are popular destinations for recreational cyclists. Piermont is 52 miles round trip from JC. Nyack is about 65 miles round trip.

The first step is to get yourself up around the GWB. I usually take JFK > 79th St > Palisade OR JFK > 40th St > Park Ave > Clifton > Blvd East > Palisade on the way up (EARLY in the morning... I am riding up from Lincoln Park), and River Rd on the way back - but River Rd both ways is a better bet for most cyclists, most times of day.

Once you're in the vicinity of the GWB, you have a couple options. You can take Henry Hudson Drive (aka "River Rd") which is fabulous riding, very scenic, but challenging, hilly terrain? it goes about 8 miles north and hooks into 9W. The other possibility is 9W all the way up (either continue on Palisade onto Lemoine, which becomes 9W, or hop down to Hudson Terrace and back up to 9W).

From 9W, you have to drop down into Piermont or Nyack. I usually turn right on Rockland Rd, then right on Ferdon Ave. That takes you right through the center of Piermont, and if you continue a few miles north, into Nyack. There are many bike-friendly spots to grab a muffin & coffee in both villages.

There are a zillion different variations of this basic route; if you want more specifics, PM me.

PS - for cyclists looking to get in some mid-week miles before or after work, I highly recommend Lincoln Park or Gregg Park in Bayonne over LSP.

I've picked up dinner there a couple times in the last few weeks - yum! Carrot salad, lagman (hearty soup w/ noodles), pilaf, samosas - excellent stuff and a good value.
Very nice vibe in their Bergen Ave shop, too - check it out!

New restaurant on Westside - Jimmy Bravo

Got a menu in the mail today from a new restaurant on Westside, near Lincoln Park - Jimmy Bravo - and decided to give it a shot for takeout.

Quite tasty! they made a very nice burger & bratwurst; good rolls & toppings.

Interesting menu - "gourmet hot dogs." Seems more like something I'd see downtown than my neighborhood. Hope they get some business & stick around!

Wow!

Here's a story about a person being run over by a car, and the reaction is schadenfreude and snark, rather than sympathy for the victim or interest in seeing the criminal driver caught.

What if the victim were a pedestrian? What if she were driving a car and got t-boned by the cab? Why is she less deserving of sympathy and justice because she was on a bike?

I have lurked here for a while, but never felt compelled to post until reading those comments. Unreal.
