I'll be making a vegetarian soup this year.

I can think of nothing better than being snowed in for the weekend and cooking up a big pot of Garlic Soup. Perfect with croutons made out of homemade bread.

Fraulein, I hope you'll join us this year!

There are. The back room has been turned into the baking area, which is also where they'll have the classes. In the front there are maybe 4-5 tables and I would guess about 8-12 chairs along the wall and toward the front window.

Stop by and check it out. It's really cute and, in my opinion, a lot nicer that SPs or Ground.

God bless 'em. The place looks beautiful, the food is delicious. So far I've tried a blueberry muffin, a pumpkin-cranberry muffin, a chocolate chip cookie, and these insanely good chocolate salty little cookies that come in a 6 pack. (No, I'm not pigging out, I was sharing everything with friends. Ok, and pigging out.)

They were a little slow today, a little line was forming, but that will fix itself with practice I think.

I wish them a lot of luck in the neighborhood. They'll be getting way too many of my dollars.

Time to pick a date for The Great Jersey City SOUP SWAP 2009.

The national soup swap is Saturday January 24, 2009 but we in Jersey City have traditionally been Sunday afternoon swappers.

Thus, I'd suggest Sunday, January 25, 2009.

Any objections or suggestions otherwise?

So why in the world would i pay that here?? Maybe they should think that people are not going there cause the fees are a bit too much. Lower the cost to bring more people in and generate excitement.

Even the MOMA has free Friday nights. What does LSC have? A free night or a discount might generate some interest. Why does everyone just look for the easy bailout?

I went to OX one night last week. I've always wanted to sit at the bar because the bar menu looks so good. I got in right at the end of happy hour and got a half-price glass of wine. I tried the oyster po'boy (tiny but delicious) and a slider (good). Then, still hungry, I had a deviled egg. It really left me wanting more all week. The bartender was really friendly and it was a good, affordable delicious little snack. I will definitely do that again.

Re: Participate in the campaign to get better PATH service - fixmypath.com

My problem with the Fix My PATH website is that it is clearly focused on Newport.

No offense, but I don't care about Newport. I don't commute through Newport. One of the questions that you're asked on the Fix My PATH website is
Quote:
* Do you believe the Newport PATH Station needs a second entrance to improve overcrowding?

I answered "No." I guess I don't know/I don't care would have been a more fair and accurate answer, but I chose "no" because I was really at the website because I was concerned about WTC weekend service.

Then it sent me an email to Governor Corzine and CCed me. This was included in the email:
Quote:
I am writing in regards to the infrequent and insufficient Port Authority PATH train service from Newport at off peak times. The station lengthening currently being funded at the Newark-WTC PATH line is unfair to those of us who really need service improvements here at the Newport station.

I don't know who is behind the "Fix My PATH" website, or how to contact them, but it seems like maybe they're taking everyone's outrage about the WTC weekend service and using it to get station improvements at Newport. I just wish they wouldn't disguise their true intentions. If the website is really "Fix My Newport PATH Station" they should just say so.

They're talking about it on 1010Wins.

They said Newport Mall is closed down, as are most businesses without water. There's a command center at Target where they're selling bottled water.

I didn't hear how long they said it would take to fix it (24 hours?) but they said there will be a boil water advisory another 72 hours after it comes back on.

I'm 30, I've been in J.C. over 5 years, and I've never been called for jury duty anywhere that I've lived.

I have a theory, though, that NYers get called much more often. All of my NYC friends seem to get called all the time.

Both my mother AND my aunt got called for jury duty for the end of October. They're happy that at least they'll be able to hang out together for a while, maybe get lunch together or car pool to the courthouse together. My mother is 50+, lived in NJ since she was born, and this is the first time she's been called in about 20 years.

In San Francisco, they had a little sign on the bus stops that read "Next bus in ___ minutes." I didn't think it was that big of a deal. But then you really get used to it, and when I was at a bus stop without it, I felt lost.

It is useful, or comforting, in some odd way.

Especially one night when we waited for what felt like an hour at a bus stop. It would've been nice to know whether we were waiting in vain or whether a bus was really coming. We ended up taking a cab, eventually.

I had tourist friends come to visit last weekend. Totally unititiated, country folks. (They live in Amish country!)

So, Saturday we went into Manhattan to do some sight seeing.

We were standing on the Grove St. platform when the PIMP appeared in head to toe red. Cane, hat, everything.

I thought my friend was going to die. She came over and whispered to me, "IS THAT A REAL PIMP?!?" She wanted to take a picture but was too afraid.

I really think it was one of the highlights of her trip!

Re: new knitting cafe
Home away from home
Home away from home

I have to say that I'm really disappointed by the JCListers who were so quick to jump in and brush this coffee shop off as "boring" and knitting as "hipster."

I stopped by tonight, it seems like a great coffee and tea shop with desserts and pastries.

They also sell yarn and knitting supplies. But I don't see why that makes it "too boring" to be a good coffee shop. I don't think it's any different than if Basic or Sweet Priscilla's started selling hobby supplies.

I've been knitting for 5 years. I have a lot of friends who knit and I've met a lot of friends and neighbors through knitting. For years, there have long been knitting groups at Basic, Starbucks, Dorrian's and Subia's. Even Janam sold a small amount of yarn and knitting needles.

I haven't kept track, but over the years I've spent quite a bit of money on yarn and knitting supplies. That's not including the money I've spent at coffee shops while knitting with friends. I even went on a knitter's cruise. Given the choice, I'd rather spend that money at a local business than at A.C. Moore or Starbucks.

And I'm not the only one. There are books, conventions and get-togethers, trips, magazines, and websites about knitting. They didn't all just sprout up yesterday.

There are also tons of knitting charity opportunities. Personally, The Red Scarf Project is one of my favorites, but there are people knitting Chemotherapy Caps, Socks for Soldiers, booties and hats for premature babies, and blankets for children going through traumatic times, among hundreds of others. But maybe trying to help people while you get to know your neighbors is too "hipster" for you.

To me, knitting seems more interesting and useful than a hobby like, oh, I don't know... cutting and pasting news stories from nj.com onto JCList.

Just because you didn't notice knitting until today, doesn't mean it's just today's trend. And I think it's disrespectful to your neighbors to try to brush it off as such.

Re: Outrageous... out-of-town board-of-ed kids going to McNair
Home away from home
Home away from home

I think this is despicable.

I grew up in a town in Central Jersey that had excellent schools. In fact, it was not unusual for families to opt to move into the town rather than pay for private schools while living elsewhere. (Even with incredibly high taxes, it makes sense if you have a few kids.)

The Board of Ed in the town also spent money on an investigator to investigate students who claimed they were living locally when they really lived elsewhere. (I think the most typical thing was "I'm living with grandma." when really mom was dropping them off at gradma's house every morning in time for the bus.) They kicked those kids out and sued them for their educational costs.

Moving on to the other issue here:
Quote:
For the record, I don't see how a city could make living in the city a condition for employment.

I know NYC has residency requirements for some jobs. (For example, I know to be a lawyer with NYC TLC or Dept of Investigation you have to be a city resident.) However - these are not union positions. Maybe it really is union power keeping that from being a reality in JC.

There are also some significant studies that people do better at their job, and are more invested in their job, when it's local. For example, you're more likely to come to work in, let's say inclement weather, and get there on time, when you live locally. You're willing to come in a little earlier in the morning or stay a little later when you know your commute home is only a few minutes. And you're less likely to be a job slacker when all of your co-workers are also your neighbors.

Many colleges give professors a stipend to live locally for this reason - it helps the school's community and it helps the school.

Quote:
Maybe I'm missing something here but with VESEY closed between Church and West Broadway how is one to exit the PATH and get into the Church Street subway tunnel (2,3 trains at Park Place, and E train at the old WTC stop?)

I think everyone will have to walk one block north on West Broadway and then make a left on the next block to go towards Church St., and towards the subway. But if you worked a block south or east of WTC, you're really going to be walking out of your way.

I guess extending the sidewalk will just let more people walk on the sidewalk at a time. Kind of like now, at Vesey at Church were everyone is trying to cross the street and it gets all backed up. If the sidewalks were wider, that might somehow help, a little bit, maybe.

Of the recent configurations, I liked it best when they had 2 entrances open - the East/Church St. side, and the North/West Broadway side. It kind of let people filter themselves out a little bit depending which way they were going.

And, as for signage, I think the best signage would be signs directing the tourists to tourist visiting areas. Especially on Fridays, there are so many tourists who get to WTC, and stand in front of the stairs/escalators, looking at their tour books and wondering "Which way do we go?" I know there are viewing platforms, why don't they make signs so the tourists know where they are?

Vesey St. May Be Off-Limits For Years
Home away from home
Home away from home

Webmaster: Please do not delete, this is relevant to the thousands of downtown J.C. residents who commute through WTC everyday.

New York Sun | September 9, 2008

In a signal that residents and business owners in Lower Manhattan could soon be facing new challenges related to the redevelopment of the World Trade Center site, the city is finalizing plans to close Vesey Street ? possibly for several years ? to accommodate the next phase of construction.

The duration of the closure of Vesey Street between Church Street and West Broadway is being discussed by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey and the city's Department of Transportation. It could last for the duration of construction of Tower 2, which could take up to five years, according to several sources.

"I am not sure about the five years, if it has to be that long," Council Member Alan Gerson said yesterday in an interview.

"It should be closed when the next phase begins because of safety issues. It is an important thoroughfare for commuters, but dragging the construction out much longer is worse than the inconvenience to the community of closing Vesey street," he said.

To accommodate the spillover from the closure of Vesey, which serves as a main thoroughfare to PATH Transit Station, the Port Authority said it would be adding new signage and extending curb cuts to expand the width of the surrounding sidewalks on Barclay and Church streets, among others.

Up to 50,000 commuters a day use the PATH Transit Station.

At a Community Board 1 meeting last night, a Port Authority spokesman, Glenn Guzi, said the duration of the closure had not been determined.

"We know that it would have some impact," he said. "What is driving this issue is safety."

Mr. Guzi also said that "modifications" on Liberty Street could have an impact on street traffic, though he said he did on not expect a closure of that street to be necessary.

A spokesman for the transportation department, Scott Gastel, said the city is "discussing traffic plans for the area with the Port Authority."

The executive director of the Port Authority, Christopher Ward, will deliver a full assessment of the scheduling and budgets for the World Trade Center reconstruction plan on September 29.

Brewster: +1

When I moved to JC, I was right out of school, my credit score was crap, because I had no real credit. (Store credit cards count towards score, but not for much.)

5 years later, my credit score is very good, and I've never been late on rent (and I'd consider us very good tenants), but I think a landlord looking at credit score alone would have really had to make a leap of faith on me.
